Billie Doux: Murderbot is coming to Apple+ in May! We have to find a way to cover this one. I read the book series for the first time fairly recently and I've been looking forward to seeing it on the screen. SkarsgÄrd!
Here's the description, and I love it. "It's rogue. It's powerful. It would rather be watching TV. Based on the award-winning, best-selling series by Martha Wells, Murderbot follows a rogue security unit as it searches for the meaning of life. Murderbot premieres May 16 on Apple TV+."
And here's the trailer:
Victoria Grossack: Gosh, Murderbot sounds like fun! These days I'm still watching the Big Bear eagle cam – Sunny and Gizmo grow every day, and I am less fearful now that they won't still be alive when I go to the YouTube. They are so fat that it's hard to imagine they will ever fly.
Besides that, my schedule is a bit more relaxed at the moment so I am bingeing on Resident Alien because season three is available on Netflix in the US but I'm not sure I'll be able to get it easily in Europe, where I head at the end of the month. I also hope to watch the Adolescence miniseries.
Billie Doux: Sunny and Gizmo look like fat gray chickens. You're right, Victoria – it's hard to picture them flying.
Mikey Heinrich: I'm finally getting around to watching the David Tennant/Cush Jumbo production of Macbeth and it's absolutely breathtaking.
Billie Doux: As is probably obvious, I'm finally watching (and reviewing) the second Dexter reboot, Original Sin. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about it. I'm a lot more interested in Dexter: Resurrection, number three, which is slated for June 2025.
Please, powers that be, I would much prefer that Dexter: Resurrection, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Murderbot, and Outlander don't air at the same time. Once upon a time I was capable of reviewing several shows at once. I'm getting too old for that now.
Morella: I've been playing lots of Abiotic Factor and Core Keeper with two groups of friends so haven't been watching much again. Our discussion about death on Fangirl's Final Destination review has me hankering to read all of the Discworld novels again, though. Been years and I'm missing a couple, but the books are fantastic.
(later)
Morella: So I went and searched for my Discworld books and found most, but not all of them. I found 23 of them, am missing 6 I know I have, and the remaining 11 I need to order sometime soon, once I'm caught up reading them again, as I own/found most of the older books. Reviewing them for the site may be a good idea some time. I'm partially through my review of The Invisible Man Returns as well, the next movie in the classic Universal horror series.
An Honest Fangirl: The Pitt finale is tonight (Thursday as I write this) and I have no idea what I’m going to do with my life once it’s over. It has been a long, long time since I’ve had true appointment TV viewing, the kind where my friends and family don’t even try to talk to me because they all know that it’s Pitt Time and I will not respond.
Mikey, my friend keeps sending me TikToks of Macbeth, and from what I’ve seen, I second the breathtaking assessment. I had no idea you could see it on a streaming service!
Mikey Heinrich: I signed up for the seven day free trial of Marquee TV just to watch it, and will inevitably forget to cancel it before the trial period ends. Now I think of it, I seem to recall that there's also a production of Macbeth starring Christopher Eccleston on there as well. And now I want every Doctor to do a production of Macbeth. I bet Peter Capaldi's would be great.
Mark Greig: Teenage me who did some acting in school is recoiling at all this flagrant use of the M word.
Mikey Heinrich: I confess a twinge of that myself. I thought it was only taboo to say inside a theater?
Mark Greig: Alas, all the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.
Mikey Heinrich: I myself am currently strutting and fretting my hour upon the stage.
Josie Kafka: I am being pursued by a bear.
Help!
Mikey Heinrich: I would, but sadly you've exited. What can one do?
Mothra: After several months of not watching much of anything except old episodes of Buffy, the last few weeks I've been trying to catch up on some shows either in anticipation of new seasons (The Last of Us) or in fear of being spoiled (Severance). I'm both excited and annoyed that the new seasons of several favorite shows seem to be dropping or about to drop (Andor) all at once.
Mark Greig: This really is an incredibly busy spring in terms of TV content. I've fallen behind on both Daredevil and Wheel of Time and still have new seasons of Doctor Who and Andor to come, not to mention finishing off One Piece. Currently at episode 458 so close to halfway through the whole thing. Didn't think I'd make it this far, although the Thriller Bark and Impel Down arcs nearly made me throw in the towel. They were a slog to get through.
Mikey Heinrich: The new season of Doctor Who began this morning. I'm not sure if this will be posted before my review of the first episode, but the short version is that it feels less disciplined than Russell T. Davies' scripts usually are in a way that I'm having trouble sorting out in my head. Anybody else watch it yet?
Billie Doux: Not yet. I wasn't tracking that it was this soon. Will watch soon!
An Honest Fangirl: I also had no idea that Doctor Who had started up again! That reminds me that I still need to watch the Christmas special...
Mikey Heinrich: The Christmas special features the best nine minutes of Doctor Who ever. You'll know it when you get to it.
I think as I sit here I'm starting to sort out what my issue with the season opener is. I hope to have my review up tonight.
New episodes drop at 3 a.m. eastern time in the US for the next seven weeks.
(later)
On Saturdays. Mentioning the day might be useful.
Very much looking forward to Murderbot. I hope they don't screw it up, the way they did Foundation, which was a travesty.
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen the Tennant version of the Scottish play, but I do highly recommend Denzel Washington's version, which I thought was absolutely brilliant, and, in stark black and white, gorgeous to look at, too.
I mean, gorgeous to look at, even if Denzel Washington weren't there.
DeleteMuderbot is on my list for sure, and with Star Trek: SNW, Dexter: Resurrection, Andor S2, Wednesday S2, Doctor Who, Squid Game 2.5, finishing up the Rookie (I'm currently in the middle of S4), catching up and finishing The Pitt, watching S3 of Daredevil before starting Born Again, along with my strangely slavish devotion to Marvel Rivals, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. Thank god Interview With the Vampire S3 isn't until next year.
ReplyDeleteJust reading that made me out of breath!
DeleteAlso, dear god if I'm doing math right, there are 40 Discworld books? That is absolutely insane.
DeleteWhat's insane is that there's not a single dud among the 40 of them!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently watching season 2 of Outlander, after Billie convinced me not to give up on it after I found the end of S1 very hard to watch. Also just finished S1 of Babylon 5, really enjoying having some "new" 90s sci fi to watch, ropey acting, wobbly sets and all.
Outlander S1 was hard, there's only a few scenes later on that are super difficult, but nothing quite that bad. As for B5, it gets much better starting with S2 and is great up through S4. I didn't care much for S5, you could almost skip it and just watch the last episode.
DeleteIn a fit of mild exhaustion, I watched an episode of the new Black Mirror season recently. I'd semi-quit the show a few years ago, because it just made me sad and disturbed.
ReplyDeleteBut this new season has a sequel to a previous episode: Season Four's "USS Callister." That's the one with Cristin Miloti and Jesse Plemmons.
It's surprisingly good! Funnier than I expected, but with just the right dose of darkness, which is to say less dark than the average Black Mirror episode.
