This Week: Happy Halloween!

Billie Doux: I'm enjoying the third season of The Diplomat and I'm looking forward to the second season of Nobody Wants This. With the final season approaching, I'm rewatching Outlander while still avoiding the spinoff Blood of my Blood. (It's amazing that they call it BOB instead of BomB. They probably don't want it to bomb.) I might be doing some Outlander novella reviews.

What is everyone watching this week?

An Honest Fangirl: 'Tis football season, so that has been taking up most of my TV watching these days, although I'm also getting back into From Dusk Till Dawn so that I can get those reviews rolling again.

Outside of traditional TV, I'm watching Critical Role for the first time. For those who have never heard of it, it's online series where a group of very well known professional voice actors play Dungeons and Dragons together. I've always been way too intimidated to get into it because a single campaign can be over 1,000 hours long, but they just started Campaign Four this past month and I'm absolutely obsessed.

Morella: I've been sucked back into WoW despite leaving it in 2018 and never planning to come back. A couple of friends talked me into it, and I did miss a couple of my characters, especially my goblin warlock as well. I haven't even sat down for any of my horror movies yet this month! I'll have to fix that soon.

Billie Doux: Is anyone watching 9-1-1 Nashville? I tried the first one but it seemed to be all about country music and yes, I know, Nashville, and there's nothing wrong with country music, but I'm a fan of the Los Angeles original show and how nuts it is. (This season's premiere episodes are set in space!)

Samantha M. Quinn: I've been avoiding WoW too, but I might be going back soon.

9-1-1 Nashville turned me off with five country music needle drops in the first half hour, plus it is somehow more country than the Texas spinoff. I also hate manufactured family infighting drama, felt very soapy.

Watched all of this year's American Ninja Warrior in about a week, and I don't know if I like the racing format. It feels a bit unfair and mildly in opposition to the fighting against your own skills contest that it used to be.

The Diplomat is great this season, although I'm still a few from the end so we'll see how it goes. It is really starting to feel like a spiritual successor to The West Wing.

Is It Cake? was silly and very spooky this season, I do love the goofiness.

Just started playing a game called Dispatch which is basically an animated superhero film with some interactive elements. But the voice acting and animation is spectacular.

Mark Greig: I'm currently 817 episodes into One Piece, so only about 330 episodes to go before I'm all caught up, and then who knows how many more episodes before the series finally ends (I'm guessing at least triple digits). Actually decided to give the Netflix remake a go, but couldn't get through the first episode. Some things should just not be made into live action.

The new season of Spy x Family has kicked off which I am eternally grateful for. With all that is terrible in the world right now I need the adorable antics of the Forger family (especially you, Anya) to get me through things.

Victoria Grossack: I've been indulging in true crime, and have been reviewing the shows that I think are worth sharing. In case people want to know what I have not decided to review, well, that includes My Father the BTK Killer, American Murder Laci Peterson, and Evil Genius. Evil Genius is an interesting story but the main culprit is so repellent and yelly, watching her on screen is too unpleasant to recommend.

I've also tried two new shows that interest me: Mindhunter and Néro. I haven't gotten enough in to either to offer to do reviews, but they appear interesting.

Josie Kafka: I just rewatched Giri/Haji, another show by Joe Barton, the showrunner for The Lazarus Project. Review coming soon!

I'm also watching The Great British Baking Show.

I meant to save up the new season of Slow Horses to binge all next week, since that's the season finale. But in a moment of exhaustion I just binged the first five (out of six) episodes this week. It's amazing. I'm very excited for the season finale.

Mikey Heinrich: I just finished my first ever re-watch of Legends of Tomorrow, which made me feel incredibly nostalgic. I forget if it was Josie or Fangirl who observed at the time that season six would probably fare better when you could binge watch it in one go, but they were totally correct. And there's actually a lot less Bishop than I recall at a time. It's strange what a different experience binge watching is versus watching weekly.

My rewatch was mostly prompted by a massive case of writers' block, and I think it may have done the trick in un-blocking. We'll see.

Finally getting around to watching the 12 Monkeys TV series (The last series on my infamous COVID TV Shows list) and so far I'm enjoying it but not super into it yet.

Oh, and Boots on Netflix is worth all the buzz it's getting. Just finishing my second watch through of it (the number of characters was hard for me to track the first time through).

Mothra: I have been out of town most of this month, but I did start a show I've avoided watching for years: The Handmaid's Tale. I would always groan when it would pop up on a suggested shows list, but for some reason it just suddenly seemed like the time to watch it. I've made it through the first two seasons (almost), loving the sharp writing and Elizabeth Moss' pure steel June. It is definitely a surreal show to watch in between reading horrifying news articles, probably even more so than when it originally aired.

Billie Doux: Mothra, if you get to the final two seasons of The Handmaid's Tale and feel like it, I never finished reviewing the series. Hint hint. :)

Mothra: I will definitely think about it! I keep hearing that the show went downhill in later seasons, so it may depend on whether I stick it out until the end (and on whether I start having Gilead-based nightmares).

Billie Doux: No pressure, Mothra – seriously! But you are an awesome writer and I'd love your take on the show.

So Happy Halloween to our readers! What are you guys watching this week?

  1. While waiting for Juliette to get back to her recaps of Voyager (no pressure), I've decided to dive into Bad Sisters. Loving Season 1 so far--and surprised it's not reviewed/recapped here. Hint hint;)

  2. Recently finished the fourth series of True Detective, the one with Jodie Foster, which was just okay, and am currently almost done rewatching the first series, with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, which is astounding, and I am even more impressed the second time around.

Not sure what comes next. I have Quarry saved up, and that looks pretty good, but my brother-in-law highly recommended The Offer, about the making of The Godfather and the involvement of the Mafia (I think his family’s Sicilian ancestry — and Buffalo mob connections — has something to do with that recommendation), so maybe that’ll come first. I also have Civil War on my short list, so there’s that.

I do find myself thinking often, however, of Fail Safe and how much better off we’d all be if Henry Fonda were president.

    1. NomadUK, I saw The Offer and thought it was watchable with a lot of fun inside info on The Godfather.

    2. Good to know! Though just ‘watchable’ may move it a bit further down my list. (I don’t always agree with my brother-in-law’s recommendations!)

  3. I don't tend to bring it up, but I'm a huge fan of The Great British Baking Show, almost as if it were just taken for granted. I love it now just as much as I loved it at the beginning.
