Mark's Best of 2025

Seasons greetings, faithful readers, and welcome to what could loosely be called my best of 2025.

Most Troublesome Hostage – Anya Forger (Spy x Family)
Apart from her mama being a superhuman assassin who could win a fistfight with a grizzly, there are two key reasons why Anya is the absolute worst child to take hostage. 1) she's a telepath so if you strap a fake bomb around her neck she will know it's fake. And 2) she's a little gremlin child who will not hesitate to start whacking the fake bomb for fun, freaking all the other hostages out.
Best Impromptu Musical Number – 'The Hills of Tanchico' (The Wheel of Time)
Heartbreaking that The Wheel of Time was cancelled just as we were getting to the really good stuff, namely the chaotic misadventures of Elayne and Nyneve. At least it lasted long enough for us to see Elayne Trakand, the future Queen of Andor, jump up on a tavern table to belt out the only Tanchico song she knew, realising a few verses in that the song was really about boobs and not the local geography.
Best Dogsitter – Superman (Superman)
There really is nothing more Superman than willingly allowing yourself to be arrested, imprisoned, and tortured just on the slim hope of rescuing the unruly, super powered mutt you've been looking after for your cousin while she was on a pub crawl across the stars.
The Gendo Ikari Award for Parenting – Victor Frankenstein (Frankenstein)
Victor faced some serious competition in this category from his own father since he was played by Charles Dance, the master of playing terrible fathers. This forced him to go all out on being absolute worst parent imaginable to his creation, including trying to kill it and framing it for his own murders.
Most Unexpected Cameo – Low Opacity Sid the Sloth (Alien: Earth)
Last thing I think anyone expected of an Alien TV series was for the main character to have ghostly visions of Sid from Ice Age as a visual representation of the emotional bond between her and her brother.
Best Extended Family – Fantastic Four
Marvel's first family has grown considerably larger in the last few years and one of the joys of Ryan North's current run is how well he has balanced the increased cast and made sure everyone, from the adults to the kids, gets their time in the spotlight.
Most Bittersweet Reunion – Avocados At Law (Daredevil: Born Again)
Just crazy to think Marvel originally planned to do a Daredevil revival without the Nelson and Page parts of Nelson, Murdock, and Page. By the time they'd realised their mistake they'd already shot most of the new season, leading to an awkward first episode where Foggy and Karen came back, but then suddenly had to be written out again. Still, brief as it was, it was so nice to see the three of them together again.
Biggest Messiah Complex – Aira Shiratori (Dandadan)
Aira is like if Cordelia thought beyond a shadow of a doubt that she, not Buffy, was the Chosen One and designated leader of the Scooby Gang. Nothing will shake her belief that she was put on this Earth by the almighty to rid the world of Momo Ayase demons, and those alien jerks, except for their adorable children who she will cuddle endlessly because they're so cute.
Best Reinforcements – Ewoks (Star Wars Visions)
The sequel to 'The Duel', one of the first season's best stories, wasn't as good as the original, but it did bless us with the sight of aquatic Ewoks commandos launching sneak attacks so it was impossible for me to not love it.
Most Stylish Dresser – The Doctor (Doctor Who)
It had its ups (Boom, 73 Yards, Rogue, Lux, The Well) and downs (basically all the season finales), but overall I rather enjoyed RTD2 and much of that was down to Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and his fantabulous wardrobe. Shame we've lost him already.
Most Tragic Dancing Queen – Mon Mothma (Andor)
She can dance, she can jive, having the absolute worst time of her life.
Truest Detectives – Benoit Blanc and Jud Duplenticy (Wake Up Dead Man)
Every Benoit Blanc mystery pairs Daniel Craig's southern fried detective with a memorable crime solving partner and Josh O'Connor's Jed might be the best so far, so good in fact you really wish Rian Johnson would switch this into some Grantchester-style series about a priest and his detective bestie solving crimes.
Best Reboot – The Ultimates
Few things in comics are more chalk and cheese than Mark Miller's original Ultimates and Deniz Camp's new and improved version. While Miller's Ultimates was edgelord shock and awe masquerading as Bush era satire, Camp's is a scathing condemnation of the way we live now that recasts the Avengers as rebels looking to tear down the entire corrupt system the bad guys have built.
Best Trip Down Memory Lane – Taggart
Lately I've been catching a lot of repeats of Taggart, the iconic Scottish crime drama famous for its ridiculous plots, melodramatic acting, near incomprehensible Glasgow accents, giving early breaks for numerous future Scottish stars (Robert Carlyle, Alan Cumming, Iain Glen, John Hannah, etc), and running for a good 16 years after the sudden death of Mark McManus, who played the title character DCI Jim Taggart, without ever changing its name.
Most Toxic Yuri - Hilara and Messia (Spartacus: House of Ashur)
Still not completely convinced that centering a spin-off around Ashur of all people was a good idea, but so far the new show certainly isn't without its merits, like the sure to be doomed relationship between fellow slaves Hilara and Messia, which would make for a sweet blossoming romance if Hilara wasn't so desperate to rise above her station she treats poor lovestruck Messia like dirt so she remains their master's favourite.
Best Running Gag – The Mighty...wait, how many? (The Mighty Nein)
This mismatched group of walking disasters adventurers got their name due to bit of miscommunication, leading to a lot of confusion and quick counting from everyone they meet.
