Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Level-Five Transporter Accident

"Scotty really screwed the pooch on this one."

Transporters creep me out, so just the title made me cringe. Until I realized this episode was about puppets.

The premise was relatively simple in that it made absolutely no sense. Scotty was carrying out an experiment using the transporter to travel to other places instead of a starship, so he was pulling a prank on a disliked rival classmate, Declan Milder, by transporting a particularly ugly puppet called Little Ricky into Declan's quarters on the USS Witmere. Instead of transporting Little Ricky, everyone on the Enterprise dissolved into transporter beams and were replaced by puppets.

Now, see, at this point, if I knew that this wasn't really happening, I might have enjoyed it more. I was completely unforgiving because it felt like they wanted us to believe it was real. Does that make sense? Or was I so unhappy about this season of This-Isn't-Star-Trek episodes that I wasn't seeing the obvious?

When did Spock's dream begin? Scotty and Little Ricky were real. La'an telling Spock that they have been "heading in different directions" and dumping him was real. So was Pike's new captain's chair. Apparently, Spock was knocked unconscious during the shuttle accident. Which also explains why much of the episode was focused on Spock's love life.

Spock has been haunted by what happened with scary fake T'Pring during "The Griffin Incident" and he wanted the real T'Pring to visit and help bring him back to logic. I loved that she requested that there be no hijinks this time, but that hijinks turned out to be the answer to their current dream dilemma.

So – the plot. Orion pirates encountered the Enterprise, Uhura the puppet hit the wrong button that let them see that the Enterprise bridge crew were all puppets plus one overworked Vulcan, and so of course the pirates decided to take over the ship. What pirate wouldn't under these circumstances?

Everyone was so much in character. M'Benga and Chapel were immediately trying to figure out if they could die as puppets or not. Interestingly, they discovered that after La'an's arm popped off and Pelia was chopped in half, they could be easily sewn back together. After the Captain punished the crew by dumping Pike out of the airlock, the puppets also discovered that they didn't need oxygen, and that gave them the key to defeating the Orions.

T'Pring was a lot more fun as a Muppet than when she was cutting off Spock's ears. She slapped Spock when he had a panic attack. She rescued him by bringing him weapons and letting the Orion set her puppet hand on fire. The one thing that actually made me laugh was Pike and Spock recreating the hand scene from The Wrath of Khan before Pike was ejected from the airlock. "The needs of the many..."

Some of the fight back scenes were fun. Pike on top of La'an on top of Una under a cloak. La'an running up a wall to kick an Orion. Scotty and his electric glove. M'Benga scream-attacking the Orions with two pencils. And Spock's smug expression as he was sitting quietly in the Captain's chair waiting for the Orions to pass out from lack of oxygen. Logic wasn't the answer. Hijinks were the solution.

And the floating in space thing at the end was very cute. Hey, I'd do it. And the Jim Hensen Muppets were all great. The Pelia puppet was absolutely the cutest, and note that she had bare feet, very hippie.

I'm relatively certain this episode wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the exceptional Angel outing "Smile Time," one of its best episodes. But Angel was a vampire fantasy show and the plot was supercreepy and made sense in a magical universe. In other words, NOT STAR TREK.

So except for the premiere, it's been all horror, comedy and gimmick episodes. We're halfway through the season. When will it stop?

Bits:

— Stardate 3019.4, Spock's log. On the way to Vulcan, the Enterprise is waylaid by Spock's very strange dream. Are puppets universal, so to speak? Do they have puppet shows on Vulcan? I'm finding it hard to believe.

— Captain Ch'rol of the Orion ship was played by the wonderful Rachael Harris, Dr. Linda on Lucifer. She was terrific. So was Joe Lo Truglio, who played her second in command Ejachi. I enjoyed his interaction with Spock.

— Who was the crew member with the hole through his chest?

Quotes:

Pelia: "Use your knees, Spock!"

M'Benga: "Dermal regenerators might not work on us anymore, but apparently, we can sew ourselves back together."

Pelia: "Engineering to Lieutenant Spock. We could use your help about now, if we're not currently getting blown up or you're in the bathroom."

T'Pring: "I am aware that pandemonium is the status quo on this starship, but just this one time, could you please acknowledge that this entire situation is absurd?"
Ortegas: "Scotty turned us into puppets. Absurdity's kinda baked into the premise."
T'Pring: (screams at length)
Pelia: "Pandemonium wins."

La'an: "There's a lot I'm going to miss about being a puppet."
Pelia: "Me, too. Like how we can hear each other in space. How are we talking right now? It doesn't even make sense."

T'Pring: "While your crew may occasionally be unorthodox, they are always in pursuit of knowledge, safety, and protecting each other. I find that endearing."

I hate to give any episode only one out of four puppet fingers, but even considering how well done it was, what choice do I have?

  1. Again, apologies for being late. It was difficult to make myself write about this one.

  2. Hi Billie,
Thanks for your review (and all the wonderful reviews I've been reading on your website for I don't know how long). Mostly it's been older series lately, so no point in commenting I thought. However this is very recent, and your thoughts in the reviews this season are things my sis and I also discussed. The entire season ao far is "special" episodes, which all series did have several of. But... not 5 in a row... However their seasons were much longer, so better spreading is more doable.
That said... did I enjoy this and the previous episodes? Yes I did (mostly... the horror one I could personally have enjoyed more with less gore).
Is it Star Trek? Yes and no... It's not really Star Trek as we know it (yes, pun intended). They do explore strange new worlds, seek out new life forms and new civilizations if you take it to the letter, they do boldly go where no one has gone before...
But still there seems to be something missing. Is it that Captain Pike, who was a great captain in the first two seasons, seems to have been dumbed down (or am I the only one thinking they made him kinda childish?)? Is it too much focus on legacies? Too much Kirk and Spock?
Or do I need McCoy coming into the mix?
Is it the that I need about half of the episode to stop being annoyed at something or someone? Especially this one... it took so long for the puppets to finally find their brains and get their act together, sigh... (though that is kinda Muppet show alike). After that it got very good and I just loved the very fitting musical scores, that must be sais as well.
I'm not sure what it is with these last two seasons... Do I keep watching? Of course... do I rewatch them soon? Well... maybe the first one with the dino's.
Sure is though, I still like seasons 1 and 2 the best.

Well so far my very long 2 cents, sorry about the ranting.

Thanks again for the reviews and all who read my comment this far... thanks for your patience 😉😁

    1. Joy, you're very welcome and thanks so much for your comment. I haven't been getting a lot of comments this season, which probably means a lot of people agree with me, or a lot of people disagree with me. Maybe both. :)

    2. Oh, and Joy, it's never too late to post a comment. We're sort of a time travel site. A lot of readers tell us that when they're trying an old show for the first time, they read along here because we don't spoil later episodes.

  3. Absolute drivel. It's amazing that the team (yes, I know there were some personnel changes) that produced the near perfect S1 & S2 have then gone and made the complete trash that are S3 and what we have seen of S4, with very small exceptions here and there. And the premiere of S4, which was pretty decent, still had all those common places: casuality, causality, it had all already happened, in millions of years hey we were there at the absolute right moment, .. god, just writing about it makes me angry again.

Maybe it is time to give the franchise another rest. This is not working anymore, and I doubt the Ellisons can choose someone to do better or even have the slightest interest to do so.

This last season and a half have been an absolute disappointment and I'm completely out of faith. Kill it already, please.

    1. Anonymous, it might indeed be time for a break and I certainly didn't think that after the second season. I was all ready for an original series spinoff with Paul Wesley. But it just feels like the show is parodying itself now.

  4. Site kept stuck on publishing, so just in case it disappeared in the transporter beam:

Great review again as usual Billie! No matter how old the show is, I keep coming back to your site in hopes you reviewed the show. Because it's actually intelligent commentary and not merely a recap. (And you haven't made it impossible to read with a million adds like so many others have)
But ok... Back to this episode:
You said: "Now, see, at this point, if I knew that this wasn't really happening, I might have enjoyed it more. I was completely unforgiving because it felt like they wanted us to believe it was real. Does that make sense?"

It totally does! Because I found everyone acting so stupid! Like they literally replaced their brains with the puppet fluff. I got really annoyed and bored even. Until halfway through, when they found their brains again and made the hijinks the answer. Then it was sort of funny and I did enjoy the jokey things. Mostly.

Which is kinda funny because totally contradicting to that, that it ended up being Spock's dream made it for me a bit like they negated the personal lessons learned. Scotty about pelia and his confidence. La'an and her inner peace. Heck even T'Pring learning hijinks can be useful. But only Spock can learn from his dreams. Did Pike keep the new chair tho? Because....it was a dream? So why change it then. Can't imagine Spock telling him, yo captain I had a dream you were a puppet....:p

This was not the worst episode of the season and I lived pelias hair. Even laughed a few times. But it still feels a little empty, as Joy put it above. Like I feel I don't need to rewatch it because there are no real layers. Just Entertainment. Which is of course fine in itself...but for Trek?

    1. Mira Ge, thanks again for your thoughtful comment and I'm glad you didn't let the site intimidate you. Sometimes Blogger can be difficult. Very good point about what was the point, since Spock was the only one to learn something from what happened.

  6. When I first heard the puppets concept, I was intrigued and excited. When I saw I couple of clips, I started to worry. "Is this just going to be cringey?" But I ended up enjoying this episode almost as much as Those Old Scientists. I admire the chutzpah of the concept; I laughed a lot; and I liked how the puppet crew learned to use their unique advantages. I get what you're saying about too many gimmick episodes, however. This does feel like polyfill ;-) without much character work or plot progression.
