Independent Spirit and Razzie Awards 2014

In anticipation of the Oscars being handed out tonight, two other groups presented awards last night. One honored the best of the past year; one honored the worst.

The Independent Spirit Awards are “awards dedicated to independent filmmakers.” Celebrating the best of the past year, none of these awards was a huge surprise:

Best Female Lead: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Best Male Lead: Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Best Supporting Female: Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years A Slave
Best Supporting Male: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club

Best Screenplay: John Ridley, 12 Years A Slave

Best First Screenplay: Bob Nelson, Nebraska
Best Cinematography: Sean Bobbitt, 12 Years A Slave
Best Editing: Nat Sanders, Short Term 12

Best First Feature: Fruitvale Station

John Cassavetes Award “is presented to the creative team of a film budgeted at less than $500,000:” This is Martin Bonner
Robert Altman Award is given to one film’s director, casting director, and its ensemble cast: Mud

Much more fun are the Razzies, the Golden Raspberry Awards, awarded to the worst of the past year. Big wins for the Smith family and Tyler Perry.

Worst Picture: Movie 43
Worst Actor: Jaden Smith, After Earth
Worst Actress: Tyler Perry, A Madea Christmas
Worst Supporting Actor: Will Smith, After Earth
Worst Supporting Actress: Kim Kardashian, Tyler Perry’s Temptation
Worst Screen Ensemble: Jaden Smith and Will Smith, After Earth
Worst Director: The Thirteen People Who Directed Movie 43
Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel: The Lone Ranger
Worst Screenplay: Movie 43

What do you think, especially about the Razzies? Did they get them right or were there even worse showings last year? Let us know.

Surprised the Fruitvale Station didn't win something. Actually, was it even nominated? (for an Independent Spirit Award, obviously, not a Razzie)
