Heated Rivalry still has me in a chokehold, to the point where I'm going to watch Saturday Night Live this week because Connor Storrie is hosting. I think he'll be good at it, so hopefully they'll give him fun stuff to do.
Victoria Grossack: I've been traveling, and saw Sleepless in Seattle on the plane. Bittersweet to see a young Rob Reiner. I also watched the Netflix documentaries on Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, because I wanted to better understand the extent of their crimes (awful, awful, and the shows only scratched the surface). Then, to clear my spirit, I'm watching the second season of Man on the Inside, so that I can review it.
And, because Jackie has started a second clutch (the first one didn't make it), I am back to watching the Big Bear Valley Eagle Cam.
An Honest Fangirl: Oh, did she have a second clutch? I didn't realize that that could happen. I was so sad when I read that the first one didn't make it. I thought that they were one and done for a season.
Victoria Grossack: She laid egg one of the second clutch on Feb 24, so more may be coming. And yes, eagles sometimes lay second clutches, although certain things need to line up. They lost the first clutch very early, so there's time in the season to do a second clutch - also helped by the fact this eagle nest is in California and not Alaska. However, it took a few weeks for Jackie's hormones to be ready for the second clutch.
Mark Greig: I've been making a big push to read all of Alan Moore's comic work this year and am frequently reminded that while he was probably the greatest writer in comics (I use the past tense because I doubt he'll ever return to writing them), he's also a rambling wizard with a fixation on using sex magic to reach higher realms of existence. I'm not joking, there's whole issues of Swamp Thing and Promethea that are literally just that.
Luckily J. H. Williams III's artwork makes that sex issue of Promethea (and the series as a whole) actually kind of beautiful. If Moore didn't often have such brilliant artistic collaborators, so much of his work would be cringy and unbearable to read. There's a lot that is, but I'm finding that it is fortunately a minority.
On the TV front, I'm excited for season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters this week and overjoyed by the return of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, which isn't just my favourite anime right now, but will likely end up as one of my all time favourite shows if it maintains this level of quality for the rest of its run.
I'm just a sucker for well told tales of immortals and their complex relationships with mortals and how they adjust to an ever changing world. I love that it's a very character driven fantasy adventure series where the quest is a personal one with no real urgency. There's a healthy amount of demon slaying and magical battles, but there's no big bad for the heroes to ultimately face, these characters are on a leisurely journey where they can take time to stop and see the sights, ttry the local food, and do some shopping. It's like if Lord of the Rings had a sequel about Legolas taking his Hobbit friends on a backpacking trip across Middle Earth.
Morella: Been mostly playing Hytale with a bit of World of Warcarft and some other games on the side. I finished both Terry Pratchett short story collections and am working on the Ankh-Morpork archives which are quite the treat.
Josie Kafka: I'm almost too embarrassed to admit I watched the entire three-episode documentary about America's Next Top Model. The documentary is called Reality Check. It's on Netflix. Many years ago, I had a roommate who liked the show, and I got into watching it, too. So it was an interesting experience of "Oh, I kinda remember that!" The point of the documentary, of course, is that it was a toxic show, which is true.
It was also a rather boring show. Like, okay, yes, it was a toxic culture back then, we can see that now. But what took nearly three hours could have been a 90-minute documentary. The most touching part came in the last episode and involves Miss J, but I don't want to spoil that for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
ChrisB: Josie — I watched the ANTM documentary as well. I was hooked on the show back in the day, but stopped watching it because Tyra annoyed me too much after a while.
I had an interesting experience this week. When life gets too much for me and I want to watch something soapy with sun, I watch various incarnations of Below Decks. I am currently Down Under. In the second season, one of the young women was in the same situation as the young woman in the second season of ANTM. Instead of allowing her to be raped (which is what the producers of ANTM did), the BDDU producers stepped in and stopped if from happening.
I understand that the culture has shifted significantly, but I was very glad to see that happen. Hopefully reality folk are beginning to realize that some things are just TOO real.
sunbunny: It's Stardew Valley's Tenth Anniversary this week so I've been playing that. Even though I've been into the game less than a year it already means so much to me.
Mothra: Aww, Stardew Valley! I played a lot of that during the Covid lockdowns. I should probably check in on my crops and dinosaur mayonnaise.
I was out of town most of the week, and returned with a raging head cold. The silver lining of said head cold is that I was able to curl up and finish Stranger Things. I had a few issues with the finale, but I was a puddle when it was all over, so I'd say it landed its emotional punches. I'll chime in, belatedly, on our discussion, after I'm done swimming in Kleenex.
Mikey Heinrich: I would totally watch 'Camping with Legolas' Like Bear Grillis, but with Legolas. And he'd take random middle earth celebrities with him, and also Zac Efron for no particular reason.
I work at a place whose name has the word Eagle, so of course I've gotten them all hooked on the eagle cam. Note - Posts made by NMikey do not reflect the views or values of this corporation.
Things in Minneapolis are still pretty grim, despite the fact that the media seems to have moved on. Still, we got the Star Wars rebel loon logo out of it, so that's pretty cool.
For some reason finishing Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has led into me watching Riverdale. Which so far has been the soapy drama fest that I didn't know I needed.
An Honest Fangirl: Zac Efron would totally be on a random camping show. I can see the vision.
Saturday Night Live update: Connor was very, very good but the writing was only okay. I was happy for him.
Billie Doux: I think Connor Storrie deserves an Emmy for that fifth episode of Heated Rivalry. Hudson Williams was excellent too, but Storrie was exceptional.
Victoria Grossack: I have to add that Jackie had a second egg in the replacement clutch!
An Honest Fangirl: And that's it from us! Readers, it's your turn. What are you watching?
