Veronica Mars: Like a Virgin

Veronica: "Life is so not a cabaret."

Have I mentioned yet how much in love I am with Keith Mars? What he did for Wallace and his damsel-in-distress mother was above and beyond, as well as tremendously satisfying. I watched that scene with Keith going crazy on that sleazy tenant's ass with a big smile on my face.

The purity test thing rang so true to me because humiliation and embarrassment are such a big part of the horrors of high school. At one point, when she discovered that someone had broken into her email and sent Duncan a very private message about love and VD, Veronica said, "Am I naked? Because in my nightmares, I'm usually naked." In fact, Veronica's clothes were stolen in the opening scene, leaving her stranded at school in a towel. So. Not just a nightmare.

Veronica, who was so tough while helping the humiliated Meg and breaking the purity test case, ended up blindsided by Abel Koontz. Why on earth was Abel Koontz unwilling to even consider evidence that would exonerate him? What does Jake Kane have on him? If Abel Koontz knew who Veronica was and was tired of hearing from Keith, why did he consent to see her? Just so he could push that nasty bit about Lianne and Jake, and Keith not being her father in Veronica's face? I'm not feeling much sympathy for Abel Koontz just now.

Logan and Weevil were not in this episode. And it was easy to imagine Logan in particular having a field day with that purity test thing. It occurred to me that we've been seeing Logan as more and more human lately, and reverting to jerkdom might not have been what they wanted to do with his character at this point.

Bits and pieces:

— We finally met Wallace's pretty mom as well as his little brother. And it looked like Mom might join the Mars camp of the Neptune civil war.

— Mac MacKenzie of the blue hair is a fun character.

— Meg's sleazy sister Lizzie turned out to be innocent. This week's obvious red herring suspect.

— Kimmy and Meg both had darned good voices for a high school production.

— Wallace has an imaginary friend named Norman that he uses for cover. Maybe he won't have to any more, now that his mom likes Keith.

— I know, pirates, but the high school skull and crossbones logo seemed inappropriate somehow. I guess it kinda matched the evil of Neptune High, though.

— Inspiration Rock Quarry. :)

Quotes:

Veronica: "Sometimes people find it very difficult to say no to me."

Meg: "What'd you score?"
Cole: "Uh, 91."
Dick: "Dude. Snow White took it and scored an 89."

Veronica: "Meg, you're the last good person at this school. I'd believe cartoon birds braided your hair this morning."
I loved this one.

Veronica: "I admit it. I splurged and spent ten bucks to read my own purity test. Apparently, I've pleasured the swim team while jacked up on goofballs."

Veronica: "My old password was GJ7B!X."
Demouy: "Well, try and make this one a little bit tougher."

Veronica: "And while there's nothing more satisfying than solving a case, there's something seedy about being the interruptus in someone else's coitus."

Solid episode. Three stars,

Billie

This episode made me a super fan the first time around and it´s still pretty great. I love Meg and Mac so much!
I have to say, Kirsten Bell simply rocks! A lot of nuances, facial expressions and impersonations that hit the spot.

btw, billie, these are my first posts but I discovered your site a while back and I love reading your reviews.

I have just discovered Veronica Mars via Netflix and I am LOVING IT!!!
This will be great to tide me over during the Vamp Diaries hiatus...

About the Abel bomb... I sort of saw that one coming after Lilly turned out to pull such an about face with the Veronica and Duncan are no longer meant to be thing...

But... i don't want that kind of pain for our girl so maybe we will find out that it was Lilly who is really Veronica's half sister but Duncan is no blood relation... Lilly did tell Veronica that she knew a "good secret" before she died...

I like duncan and want to see those crazy kids work it out.. but ewwww yuck if they turn out to be related... that is just not good, even though they have been very clear the two never slept together... yeesh!

The scene with Abel Koontz was impressive acting on both sides of the glass. I figured Veronica had passed the apple blossom test and she was home free. Wow, was I ever wrong.

Although she was telling Meg to get tough and get even, this is the first time we see Veronica lose it. "Depends on who's listening" was the first crack in the facade. The end was the final blow. I guess it depends on who's talking as well.
