Supernatural: Tall Tales

Bobby: "Aliens?"
Sam: "Yeah."
Bobby: "Aliens?"
Dean: "Yeah."

So they followed last week's exceptional episode full of gut-wrenching drama with, of all things, Dean and Sam meet the National Inquirer. Slow-dancing aliens, alligators in the sewers... I think my favorite scene was Dean stuffing those huge candies into his mouth. I laughed so hard I almost passed out. As Dean said, that trickster had style. And keeping the trickster alive in the end? Smart move. Because they absolutely have to bring him back.

As usual, the Winchester brothers took it to the next level. Anyone who has ever had to share a room with a sibling (I have) can relate to Dean and Sam in a motel room driving each other nuts. The two of them wrestling on the bed was just hilarious. You could kind of see them at, like, twelve and eight, because that's how they were acting.

I particularly loved each of them relating a radically different side of the story to Bobby. Was Dean really drinking purple nurples with Starla the sloppy drunk, or exchanging folklore with a classy grad student who was smitten with him? Probably somewhere in between those two extremes. And I somehow doubt that Sam actually hugged a student and called him a brave little soldier.

Season two has been one good episode after another, and Ackles and Padalecki have learned to play off each other like tennis masters. I'm also really liking Jim Beaver as Bobby, especially in these last two outstanding episodes.

Bits and pieces:

— Apparently, tricksters can be killed with a stake through the heart. Unlike vamps in this 'verse, who cannot be killed with a stake through the heart. Except the trickster didn't die. Huh?

— The motel room was just really ugly. It was called "King's Lair" and had faux royal-looking headboards and a grungy kitchen.

— Dean and Sam pretended to be reporters from the local paper. They probably should have said they were from Weekly World News again because that would have fit. WWN was even mentioned. I don't think they ever said where they were, but when the boys were "checking for wires," they were wearing uniform jackets with "Ohio Connect DSL" on them.

Quotes:

Bobby: "Come on, now. You're bickering like an old married couple."
Dean: "No. See, married couples can get divorced."

Grad student: (to Dean) "Please. I can't even concentrate. It's like staring into the sun."

Curtis: "They probed me. Again and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and then one more time."
Dean: "Yikes."
Curtis: "And that's not even the worst of it."
Dean: "How could it get any worse? Some alien made you his bitch."
Curtis: (long pause) "They... they made me.... slow dance."

Sam: "Look, man. I know this all has to be so hard."
Student: "Um, not so much."
Sam: "... but I want you know I'm here for you. You brave little soldier. I acknowledge your pain. Come here. (hugs him) You're too precious for this world."

Dean: "These punishments. They're almost poetic. Actually, it'd be more like a limerick."

Sam: "I'll call Bobby. Maybe he's run into something like this before."
Dean: "Oh, I'm sure he has. Just your typical haunted campus, alien abduction, alligator in a sewer gig."

Four out of four stars,

Billie

Billie Doux adores Supernatural which is a good thing since apparently, it's eternal.

  1. Another winner for me! This is hilarious, and my favourite scene may be Dean stuffing his face.
    Freaking hilarious!

  2. This episode reminded me so much of 'Bad Blood', certainly the funniest and one of the best 'X-Files' of all. It's always hilarious to see how our beloved characters see each other as compared to how we see them.

  3. I adored this episode, too. The humor was great and reminder me of an episode of Buffy in some ways. The trickster really reminded my husband and I of Q from Star Trek: TNG, making the ending all that much more appropriate since Q kept popping back up all the time.

  4. that stained glass piece Dean looks at before heading in for his confrontation with the trickster, were there angels on that?

PS. Sam telling that kid he is "too precious for this world" NEVER gets old.

  5. I lost it with the slow dancing aliens

But I hate it when they do that stupid gag story bit where one character is mocking the other character......it's just cheap in my opinion

    I'd give it a 4.5 outta 5 only cause of trickster :D

  6. Billie Doux,

We are inducting a new member to the Supernatural fan club. DD jumped ahead after a few season one episodes to Mystery Spot, the new inductee couldn't sit through the multiple Dean deaths and ran screaming from the room.

I suggested, after re-reading your review he be started off here, if jumping ahead is required.
Forwarded a copy of your review to him, so he could be forearmed.
Your reviews are so thoughtfully written, and never spoil.
Thank you again for sharing your talent.
And Happy New Year to you and yours, and your readers and fellow writers.

    1. You let them SKIP?!!?!?! Sorry, sorry for raising my voice... uh, well I hope they went back to the episodes they skipped once they had enough reassurance that their commitment was worth it.

  8. It's as funny as I remember it lol. That bit where Sam interrupted his kiss with the "classy grad student" was actually even funnier, the way he just had a whole prissy attitude going into it long before his speech devolves into "blah blahs." And the pause before that last "blah" got me again, I didn't remember that.

You should've continued that first quote:
"Me and him? We're like uh, Siamese twins"
    "It's CONJOINED twins!"
    "See what I mean?"
    lol

B: "You got a Trickster on your hands"
    D: *finger snap* "That's what I thought!"
    S: "What?! No you didn't"
