Smallville: Blank

Clark: "How did I do that?"
Chloe: "Why did I always picture myself on the other end of this conversation?"

A mind-wiping coffee shop thief shows up, and suddenly Clark didn't know who he was. A superhero with amnesia. I know, I know, but I love stuff like this.

The best part of this one was Chloe and Clark. I really loved Chloe taking care of Clark and covering for him, as she discovered a bunch of his powers that she knew nothing about. For a few moments, I was afraid Chloe was going to lose all of her memories of Clark's superpowers... but that scene at the end suggested that she remembered everything, or nearly everything. Hallelujah.

Clark's wariness of Lex, inspired by Chloe's warning, was right on the money, since Lex was prevaricating about the two of them researching the caves together. Lex just wanted to find out more about Clark while Clark was out of it. Things between Clark and Lex are getting mildly uncomfortable, because Clark can feel that Lex has ulterior motives, and Lex can't stop trying to find out about Clark. They're still going through the friendship motions, but it's not the same as it was.

Kevin, whose thievery started the melee, turned out to be a very good guy; after what Clark did for him, he kept Clark's secret, and covered for him. Bless his heart. I guess it was because he was a Summerholt experimental victim, not a meteor freak. But now we have yet another person running around who knows Clark's secret. It's getting to be a pretty big club.

I was a bit more bored with amnesiac Clark deciding to pursue Lana in a big way, and unfortunately, I can tell that new development isn't going away. And consider the irony. Lana has decided that, secret-wise, Jason is unacceptable because he's too much like Clark. You'd think Lana would have given up on Clark completely by now. Oh, how I wish she would.

Bits and quotes:

— Seeing Clark caught using his powers in front of Kevin, Chloe, Lois, and Sheriff Adams was just fun. Clark actually looked guilty at first. But then he Samson'd those machines as if he thought, well, what the hell.

Clark: "I can hear someone running."
Chloe: "Wow. And the super-Wheaties abilities just keep coming."

Chloe: "Premature combustion. That's one I didn't need to know about."
And you know what that told me? That Clark is literally hot for Lana mostly because of the way she looks.

At least three stars, and I might go higher,

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. The best thing about this episode is the Chloe/Clark interaction. She is so good -- hiding everything she can and stepping in to take care of Clark. Her reactions to the other abilities were classic Sullivan. No wonder she's a writer -- she's great with words.

It was also Chloe who pointed out to Clark that he made all the same choices (including Lana, which is too bad), except one. The look she gives him at the end -- there must be a part of him that knows, or at least suspects, that she knows.

Lex was the complete opposite to Chloe. While professing to be Clark's friend, he was lying to him and trying to find out even more. And, thanks to Chloe's warning, Clark was on his guard. These two have begun to circle each other like wolves. Nothing seems real between them any more.

  3. "I never realized how complicated that zombies life was'. I loved how Chloe really realized how hard it was to be Clark, finding out he had more than just speed and strength. She clearly knew before there was something up with Clark and how he saved people, then she thought she had the entire answer when she found out about his speed and strength. By the end she seemed to understand about Clark a little more, how hard it was to help people and hide his gifts at the same time. I also loved when she talked Clark out of outing himself saying that he must have had a good reason for hiding, realizing with all these powers that there was likely a real reason not just childish insecurity.
