Smallville: Forever

Chloe: "Gives new meaning to the phrase 'capturing the moment,' doesn't it?"

Stuck in high school forever. Now, that's real horror.

All of the "most likely to" yearbookers were kidnapped by Mr. Meteor Freak House of Wax, who was ultimately hoist by his own petard. I suppose this was a little allegory about how difficult change is, but that we won't survive if we don't accept it.

But oddly enough, Clark is not going to change. He is planning to stay in Smallville, help out on the farm, and commute to Central Kansas. And there was a reason for Jonathan's anger and humiliation when he learned about it. Turned out Jonathan gave up a scholarship at Met U because his father asked him to stay on the farm. Somewhat touching.

But as usual, I was more interested in what was happening with the Luthors. We got a double parent-child psycho bonding exercise, with Lionel and Lex tied to chairs, and Genevieve and Jason going nuts with the torture. Lionel really has changed; he broke, to save Lex. Even more surprisingly, Lex returned the favor, and saved Lionel's life. And just so we didn't start getting mushy about it, Lionel shot Jason in order to stop him from telling Lex some tasty tidbits about Clark. Why, why, why? What does Lionel know about Clark?

Jason didn't come out well here. He turned out to be a homicidal mama's boy willing to torture at her command, before plummeting to his (probable) death. But at least he really cared about Lana. Yeah, like that mattered.

Bits and pieces:

— Chloe took down her Wall of Weird. That was momentous.

— Lana has decided to stay in Smallville. Does it have something to do with her being the Chosen One?

— Chloe is going to Met U.

— As Chloe was walking through the strangely empty high school in the teaser, there was a sign that said, "What's wrong with this picture?"

— Haley's wax head breaking up into pieces was outright icky. That was meant to get us emotionally on board with Chloe, Lana, and Lois all in real jeopardy.

Quotes:

Lana: "I don't know if Met U is ready for the Wall of Weird."

Genevieve: "All that might change if his own flesh and blood were at stake."
Lex: "You obviously don't know my father as well as I do."

Lex: (re: Genevieve and Jason) "Makes us look like the Waltons, doesn't it?"

Standard good Smallville episode. Three stars,

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. I love how Lois broke into the fake school without help from Clark. She's a girl after my own heart.

  2. Was anyone else reminded of the "Ice" episode in Alias? That's all I could think about when the bodies froze and then exploded.

I have trouble with high school nostalgia episodes, simply because I cannot relate to them. I couldn't get out fast enough. So fast, I dropped out, so pining after high school just seems odd to me.

The Luthors completely saved this episode. They have the most twisted, yet oddly compelling relationship. Lex has certainly come down on the protecting Lana front -- even going so far as to threaten Lionel about it. Interesting...

  3. Yes, Chris, I couldn't wait to get out of high school, either. I so related to the high school on the Hellmouth.

  4. Damn... that poor wax head he just threw onto the stairs... remarkably muted responses from Chloe and Lana >_>
I actually am weirdly wistful about the highschool days. And no mine weren't enviable at all (and I actively hate the "taking a test where you struggle to read/remember the first sentence on it" recurring dreams), but I do miss the forced familiarity of 70 - 90 students in the same year mostly taking all the same classes over a period of 5 years, even longer in my case since we had both an elementary and a highschool attached to each other. It's just never really the same again, even if it's without a doubt much better
