Smallville: Heat

Jonathan: "Rule number one. Always practice away from the barn."

This episode, especially the first half hour, was just hilarious. Kudos to the writing staff.

Desiree Atkins, the (literally) hot and sexy new biology teacher, managed to lasso and marry Lex in a New York minute. But the real news was that even without using her magic purple pheromones (that didn't work on Clark, anyway), she turned Clark on, triggering the development of his heat vision. The scenes where he nearly burned down his classroom and the Talon were just so much fun. I like Clark as a character, but let's face it, teenage boys are usually pretty preoccupied with sex, and Clark has been way too virtuous for way too long.

In other news, Lana recorded what turned into a Dear John video for Whitney, who should stay gone, please. Lana said that having a relationship that was based on secrets and lies was doomed to fail. Does this mean Clark should tell her the truth? Well, maybe I'd feel that way if I thought Clark belonged with Lana. Which I don't.

Bits and pieces:

— Was this supposed to take place three months after "Vortex?" Was "Vortex" supposed to be the first season finale?

— Clark experimented with his heat vision by lighting candles. Not coincidentally, they were all red, white, and blue.

— Chloe mentioned a hot young intern from Metropolis High.

— Loved the antiquated sex ed film and everyone's uncomfortable reaction. We've all been through that one.

— If Desiree's pheromones were caused by the meteor shower, how come they were purple instead of green?

— Desiree blew up her car and framed Clark for it: one point.

Quotes:

Clark: "So I'm maturing into a firestarter?"

Jonathan: "Five scarecrows, two water barrels, and our mailbox later..."
Clark: "Dad, you were right. Once I understood what triggered the heat, I was able to control it without thinking about... sex."

This was probably a three star episode, but I'm tempted to give it four just for entertainment value. What fun,

Billie

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. Whoever came up with the idea of tying the heat vision into sex had an inspired moment. The first part of this episode actually made me laugh out loud -- not something that happens often with this show.

I also love the fact that Lana seems to be picking up on the fact that Clark is "different," and that the pheromones didn't work on him. Chloe just thought it was because he can resist all women. Ah, the selflessness of youth...

  2. I wonder if this episode was originally intended to air after "Red", since the "purple" pheromones from the meteor shower make a lot more sense after that episode. Sorry, is that a spoiler?

    Fun episode, in any event.
