Smallville: Obscura

Clark: "Chloe leaves for a day, and the Torch goes down in flames."
Lana: "Safe to say we won't lose you to the entrancing world of journalism."

So. Lana and Whitney are off horseback riding, and they encounter a gas main fire and get hit by exploding K. (Let's face it. No place in Smallville is safe.) Fortunately, it gave Lana psychic powers that linked her to Bad Officer Watts in time to save Chloe from her exceptionally weird kidnapping experience. If Watts was planning all along to rescue Chloe in order to make himself look good, her life wasn't in as much danger as it appeared. But still, being buried in a field is very shuddery.

Clark finally gave up on Lana and started paying attention to Chloe. Chloe even gave Clark his first kiss. And of course, Lana was jealous. Let her be jealous! Come on, Clark. Everyone who has ever read a Superman comic book knows that Chloe is much more your type of girl than Lana. Wake up and smell the girl reporter, Clark.

Eddie Cole, crop duster, saw Clark's ship land twelve years ago. Lex had Dr. Hamilton do an analysis of that very same field, and found an octagonal piece of metal that just happens to fit into Clark's ship. I think we're ramping up for the season finale, folks.

Bits and pieces:

— This one amused me right off the bat when we were introduced to two cops named Watts and Vertigo. Watts and Vertigo? The less evil one was played by Aaron Douglas, who plays Chief Tyrol on one of my favorite shows, Battlestar Galactica.

— Carrie Castle's suck-up article brought Lex under the eyes of the Inquisitor. The National Inquisitor, that is.

— Chloe moved to Smallville from Metropolis when she was in eighth grade.

— Chloe was planning to "crash in her cousin's dorm." If you've seen the entire series, you know who that cousin is. Except that this cousin isn't old enough to be in college at this point. Oops.

— Lana got thrown across a field by the gas main explosion; that's one point. The bullet Clark deflected went through a skylight breaking tons of glass, two. Clark threw Watts across the carnival grounds. A three point episode.

Quotes, and all of our good quotes for this one were by Chloe:

"Clark, I knew it was you. It's always you."

"Clark Kent leaps tall theories in a single bound."

"I would love to, Clark. Now, I'm going to go before my good karma runs out."

Fast-paced, and pretty good. Three stars,

Billie

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. Just a minor correction... according to IMDB it's BIRtigo, not Vertigo, heh. But, yes, Aaron Douglas? Still awesome.

  2. Am I the only one who wonders what might have happened if Watts ended the episode alive and in jail, and Lana continued to get visions through his eyes of him being made a prison bitch?

  3. The look on Chloe's face as she walks out of the barn is worth the price of admission. I agree with you, Billie. Clark needs to get off this Lana thing and pay attention to the great girl standing right in front of him.
