Smallville: Prey

Jimmy: "Whoever did this is beyond steroids."

Clark was monitoring the police scanner and saving people! That was new, and way overdue. Clark even leaped a tall building in a single bound. He's finally embracing his destiny. It took eight seasons to get here, folks. Let's savor the moment.

As Clark began his ascent toward his future persona, Davis began his descent. I just realized that Tess isn't the one replacing Lex in the cast; it's Davis, a genuinely good person who is unknowingly concealing a monster within. I have to say some nice things about Sam Witwer, who did some great work as Crashdown on Battlestar Galactica. He's a strong actor; his character is sympathetic but you can feel the darkness beneath the surface. I'm encouraged. Maybe season eight won't be a total loss.

It's interesting that they're developing a relationship between Davis and Chloe, which will create conflict with Clark. Davis is sensitive enough to shed genuine tears in front of Chloe, and Chloe revealed that she has feelings for Davis. I really want her to break up with Jimmy. Maybe Davis will make it happen.

Another good thing about this episode was Detective John Jones, Metropolis Homicide. Clark has an inside contact with the police, and it's someone he absolutely trusts. I liked that Martian Man Hunter suggested Clark think seriously about a disguise. Clark should have thought ahead and started wearing glasses a long time ago. Except I bet the suits didn't want anything obscuring Tom Welling's exceptional face. Speaking of which, I could swear his pale green eyes are looking bluer this season. Am I imagining it?

Bits and pieces:

— What is more improbable? Group therapy for meteor freaks, or that they would actually leave their real names?

— This season, we've been treated to Justin Hartley wearing as little as possible. We just got Sam Witwer wearing as little as possible, too. This could quite possibly be a theme.

— Mary the meteor freak looked alarmingly like Lana.

— Jimmy is on the trail of the "sneaky samaritan/citizen X."

— We can add speed reading to Clark's developing powers.

— Chloe actually has pink file cabinets. At least they're not red, yellow or blue. Chloe's clothes and sets do tend to be in the green and purple range. But pink?

Definitely better. Three stars,

Billie

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. Hey Billie, how much of the Superman-DC comics did you know while watching this show? NOTHING to do with the quality of your reviews, which are highlights of my day when I read them for every show I watch lol.
I ask Bc I myself am passionate about learning more of comic book mythology as I am a massive fan of live-action superhero stuff lately.

  2. Lillian, very little. I did read some Superman and Batman comics as a child, but that was it. While I was reviewing Smallville, I would often ask my son for comic info. I have no idea how anyone would start to pick up that sort of comic knowledge.

Thanks so much for the kind words. :)
