Extremely important reader survey

(Well, sort of important.)

I have every intention of continuing to review Lost and Battlestar Galactica; they're my two favorite shows.

But the end of Alias is approaching on little cat feet, I'm nearly finished with Nikita, and I'm feeling iffy about The Dead Zone. I've started thinking seriously about taking on another show or two. Taking on a new show is a serious commitment of time and effort for me and I can't make any promises, but I don't write in a vacuum and I'd love to know what you'd really like to see on my site.

Here's a list of shows, some current and some not-so-current, that I might consider reviewing. What would you like me to review? Should I just wait until next fall instead and see what grabs me? If the show you're crazy about isn't listed, leave me a comment.

(Note from 2009: This poll was taken down many moons ago, so you can't vote in it. But I wanted to leave the whole thing up anyway. It's interesting from an historical perspective. Plus, lots of comments.)

You may choose more than one answer.

Please review:

Babylon 5
Deadwood
Desperate Housewives
Highlander
Medium
Six Feet Under
Supernatural
Veronica Mars
None of the above
Wait for a new show

What should I do about Smallville?

Keep reviewing new episodes
Do retro reviews of old episodes
Don't bother on my account

What reviews do you come to my site to read?

Alias
Angel
Battlestar Galactica
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Dead Zone
Lost
La Femme Nikita
Smallville
I just read your blog

Thank you so much for playing. I love my readers. You're the best.

  1. I've never seen (and have heard very little) about the shows you listed that you're considering reviewing. But sometimes I can get interested in a show based purely on a review.

  2. Out of the new shows suggested, Veronica Mars is my favorite, and, I believe, artisically superior to the rest (except Deadwood, I suppose). But it's not a genre show, so it would be a departure for you, wouldn't it?
I think that the best choice for you would be to review a show that you like to watch. This is a problem, because the latest crop of genre shows (Supernatural, Surface, Medium, Threshold, etc.) isn't the best possible, especially compared to Battlestar Galactica.
Another possibility for you: Stargate SG-1, now in its ninth season! they had some great episodes along the years. It's a solid show which used to be the highest-rated show on SciFi (before BSG, of course).

  3. There is one other show that I think you should keep an eye on. 4400. I remember reading that you watched it so there's always the possibility. It is a show that has been getting better with nearly every episode and has many of the plot twists and surprises that make this genre so great.

  4. i think the 4400 really should be your new "review victim" , its sci-fi, it´s brilliantly written and the third season is about to start this summer and i really think you should choose something that is still on air - and i dont mean reruns!! prison break would be nice, too, but i don´t think it fits to well with the rest of your portfolio...oh, and have you ever considered reviewing comedies? i would just love to read reviews of arrested development or weeds or nip/tuck on your site, and please don´t hop on the wysteria lane-hysteria train, the housewives really are a complete waste of time!!!! thanks for letting me voice my opinion and greetings from germany - yes, there are germans among your readers and they really appreciate your nice work!!

  5. I would love your site even more if you had decided to start reviewing any of these following shows that I watch each week:

Charmed --> a tv show worth checking but it's currently on it's final season; you can always start reviewing from Season One though
Desperate Housewives --> a tv show worth checking
    Medium
    The Apprentice
    American Idol
Lost --> you're already reviewing that, keep up the good work!
The O.C. --> a tv show worth checking
    Twins

  6. Oh, I forgot to mention the NBC soap opera "Passions". And you can of course, check out the other current soap operas although only Passions has my interest.

If you want more info on Passions, you can search on google for Dustin's Passions page.

  7. My vote goes to Medium - a very well-written and engaging show IMO, which a lot of TV-philes seem to pass over for some reason. Reviewing ended shows seems a little futile (unless you feel strongly about it, of course - Firefly comes to mind). Veronica Mars is very popular (The Man himself wrote an ode to it and even made a guest appearance) but somehow I never understood what all the hype was about. And as for Supernatural, 4400 and Threshold.. they're just second-grade stuff, barely watchable.

  8. I would go for Medium because it's better than The Dead Zone was even in it's good days and Six Feet Under because as primary reviewer for the series on TV Tome I would be interesting to see how you found the series' depiction of death and their out of this world imaginative fantasy sequence.

Veronica Mars is also a good possibility too as is Deadwood.

  9. Veronica Mars and Deadwood are easily the best shows on the list.

I voted for Veronica Mars --even though it technically doesn't fall into the sci-fi/fantasy genre, it appeals to a lot of the same fans because of the intricacy and complexity of the plotting and structure and the clever dialogue. When Joss Whedon, Stephen King and Kevin Smith all go out of their way to praise a tv show publicly, it's got to be something special and VM certainly is.

  10. Hey Billie, I don't have a blogger I.D. but I have been reading your reviews for a while now for Alias, Lost, and Battlestar Galactica.

One show that's not on there that I personally love is 24. If you liked Alias in it's first two seasons you will like 24. Give it a try. Also Nip/Tuck is another one of my favorite drama's, that I think you will like.(Season 4 starts in May). The characters are so well written and the drama is unlike any other show.

  11. Farscape! Farscape! Farscape!

How about Farscape? Give it a go, spend some time with it, it is sooooo much more than muppets in space (not that there is anything wrong with muppets in space).

Ahem. And keep up the good work.

  13. I would love to see Highlander, Supernatural, and Veronica Mars. Those are some of my all time favorites.

  14. Billie,
I voted on all these but just wanted to add that I think you should do whatever you enjoy on all this. I definitely get the impression that the Dead Zone has ceased to entertain you. You should jump into something new and fun, but watch out for getting obligated into anything as it kills the joy. Just my thoughts.

  15. I voted for Veronica Mars because I love the show, but also because neither Medium nor Supernatural has arrived here yet, so I have no idea if they are any good.

However, if you ever do write Firefly reviews, I wil be here in a heartbeat.

  16. I read your BSG and Lost reviews constantly (and used to read Buffy and Angel Reviews on TVTome (RIP). Anyway, I officially voted for Supernatural (I think it is becoming something close to "Buffy with Dudes"), but as I was reading through the comments I was reminded of some other good ones.
I'd like to throw in a second vote for Grey's Anatomy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that show! Any show that makes me cry on a weekly basis is worth some review time. :)

    -the doc

    P.S.
I almost forgot - The 4400 (summer seasons, if I'm not mistaken).

"P.S.2" If it were really up to me, I'd have you review ALL the shows I watch. :)

  17. You should review 24 and Grey's Anatomy.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You should the new Doctor Who which premieres on sci-fi channel Fridays at 9pm from March 17th.

UK viewers are getting the second season in April and it's well worth reviewing.

I wouldn't go for Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy. They're good shows but a little too mainstream IMO.

  19. Hi , i dont know about the rest of the people that come here to read your reviews, i generarly come here to read your analisis about shows that have a tricky storylines, or interesting twists. therefore i suggest that you should review more shows like "The 4400" or "Veronica Mars" even thow i like shows like "Grays Anatomy" and "Nip/Tuck". I simply don't see in these shows anything tou can review except maby the qulity of the episodes.

    P.S.
another grate show is "Weeds", you should defenetly check it out.

(sorry fo the spelling, I'm used to word doing that for me.)

  20. I visit to read the reviews for Buffy, Angel, Alias and Lost. I really enjoy them, and still go through the reviews again when I rewatch older episodes.

Could I possibly suggest you review Firefly? I know with Buffy and Angel you definitely seem to enjoy Whedon shows, and Firefly was definitely a good one. Plus, its only 14 episodes so it wouldn't be too time consuming, kind of refreshing in a way.

Of course maybe you don't have the Firefly DVD or something, in which case it might be hard to catch it on TV. But I definitely think you might enjoy it, and I would certainly enjoy reading Firefly reviews.

Aside from that, I can't really think of many other TV shows I think you should review. Veronica Mars hasn't been shown over here yet, but I think it sounds like a good choice as I've heard nothing but good reviews. I do watch Desperate Housewives and I think it is very enjoyable but I'm not sure if it would stand up to the same scrutiny that Buffy or Angel, for example, would.

Anyway thanks for such great reviews and good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  21. Well there are tons of great shows out there.

Some of the better are (like suggested above) 4400 and Medium.
Stargate SG-1/Atlantis are great shows too, but than you would have a lot of catching up to do (SG1 9 seasons and Atlantis 2, each with 20 episodes).

Further more, some you could consider: Taken (mini serie, 10 episodes), Firefly (not so big, 15 episodes and 1 movie), Prison Break (at the moment 13).

  22. shows that would qualify as "I would read the review if you wrote it" include: Smallville, Medium, Desperate Housewives, Stargate Atlantis and Veronica Mars

but since I can't have all my favorites, I would say that my official vote/request would be between these: in 1st place is Supernatural and in 2nd place: Grey's Anatomy. I am "glued to the set" when these two shows are on. (Smallville is my 3rd place choice.)

  23. Veronica Mars is such a superb show. My favorite is still Buffy, and only Mars comes close. I started reading your Buffy reviews a few years back and would love to see your take on Veronica.

The other show I just think is great, great, great is Gilmore Girls. I don't suppose it's up your alley, and, it being in its 6th season and probably not to be on the air that much longer, it may be a bit late to start reviewing it anyway. But check it out for your own enjoyment! I think the first two or three years were the best.

  24. Hey Billie, I'm sure you get this all the time, but your reviews are very well-written and make an amazing read after each episode (of Alias and Lost, for me at least)! I'll have to suggest 24 and Numb3rs as 2 other shows to review. Have you had a chance to watch an episode of Numb3rs?

  25. Hi! A show I really like is Bones with Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, and I've been hoping you'd review it because I can never remember the quotes and all the references I want to check out...and I love having quotes as my MSN name. You might have already checked it out and hate it, but I just thought I'd bring it up.
P.s I just found out at least 124 other people watch Alias! Yay!
