Lost: Namaste

Jack: "What do you think?"
Kate: "I think we should listen to Sawyer."
Hurley: "I vote for not camping."

This episode felt like part two of "LaFleur." It was a "getting us from there to here" type of episode. Nothing wrong with that. It was still fun to watch.

Jack used to be the leader and the doctor, while Sawyer was just a con man who was good with a gun. Now Sawyer is head of security, in control of his life, an intellectual quoting Winston Churchill, and Jack is nothing. Sawyer made cutting (and possibly well-deserved) comments about Jack's leadership style, too. Did Sawyer just use his advantage to make his romantic rival a janitor? Yes, the recruitment of a new doctor would be harder to fake, but wouldn't Jack be better suited to, well, pretty much anything else?

(For a moment, I thought Juliet was going to sabotage Kate, too, but it's hard to believe that Juliet would be that mean to anyone. Then again, she did try to talk Jack into killing Ben a couple of seasons ago, didn't she?)

Sawyer, Juliet, Miles and Jin have integrated into the Dharma Initiative. I can't imagine it'll be all that easy to insert three more people. Especially Jack, who won't accept his new career without a fight. And that love quadrangle isn't going to just go away. Although if everyone would just act like a grown-up about it, Kate and Jack could move in together and go play canasta with Sawyer and Juliet every Friday night.

I think the biggest problem is going to be teenage Ben. (And is he creepy, or what?) I assume that young Ben is already flirting with the Others, just from the way he was acting. Will he try to break Sayid out? (Maybe there's a file in that sandwich.) Or does Ben know that Sayid isn't really a hostile? The Losties all know what Ben is going to do someday; I can't believe they won't at least try to stop the massacre of all those people, no matter what Faraday said. And Christian is apparently about to show Sun and Frank how to get to 1977. What will happen when they show up? Nowhere to hide. There won't be another batch of recruits for six months.

Why were the Oceanic Five separated at all? Why did Sun end up in 2007 with Ben and the passengers from coach? For that matter, why did Locke end up there as well? If it were just Ben, I'd think it was because there couldn't be two of him in one place. But that doesn't explain Sun and Locke.

I loved Sun whacking Ben with an oar; definitely my favorite moment in the entire episode, even though I could see it coming. Maybe it's just Ben's destiny to go through life with injuries. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Character bits:

Whose story was this? There really was no specific emphasis on any one character. For awhile there, I thought it would be Frank, whose valiant effort to land flight 316 reminded me of the Miracle on the Hudson.

I loved that Hurley put on a sleep mask as the plane started to shake. He truly didn't want to see what happened. But really. Who would do that?

We finally met Radzinsky, Inman's Hatch partner who was mentioned in "Live Together, Die Alone." Radzinsky created the invisible map on the hatch door, and edited the Orientation film. And killed himself, if I remember correctly. Radzinksy is nasty and obnoxious. Not much of an improvement on Patchy.

Amy and Horace named their new baby Ethan. So much for that little mystery.

As she regained consciousness after the crash, Ilana said the name "Sarah." The only Sarah I know of so far in the story is Jack's ex-wife. It's probably not her.

A lot of us have theorized that Miles was Dr. Pierre Chang's baby. We don't know what's going on with Miles, so I suppose it could still be true. Uncomfortable for him, though, if he has to avoid his parents and younger self. If he's been born yet.

Faraday was mentioned, but Sawyer said he was gone. In the season opener, Faraday was working with Dr. Chang when the Wheel was discovered. Has that happened yet? If it hasn't, then the baby, whoever it is, hasn't been born yet, either.

Phil the security guy is very nosy. They'd all better watch themselves around him.

In this week's hair report, Jack's hair is longer than it's ever been. It makes him look different, somehow.

As they were reunited, Sawyer called Hurley "Kong" almost immediately, and then backtracked and fondly called him Hugo. And he didn't call Kate "Freckles." He also called Radzinsky "Quick Draw." Very appropriate, considering how gung ho Radzinsky was with the guns.

Bits and pieces:

— As 316 was crashing, you could hear "4 8 15 16 23 42" over the radio. Is that right? Wasn't it turned off?

— The Dharma security code for the hostiles is "14J."

— The new recruits were greeted with "Ride, Captain, ride upon your mystery ship." How appropriate.

— One of the TV monitors at the Flame was running The Muppet Show.

— Hurley's Dharma jumpsuit had the word "chef" on it. Kate's said "motor pool," so she'll be working with Juliet. There's a car crash waiting to happen.

— There were whispers for Sun and Frank right before Christian showed up, backlit so you couldn't see his sneakers. We've seen Christian so many times now that he almost feels like a normal guy. Yes, it's just Jack's dead father walking and talking, nothing to see here, move along.

— The Swan is being built. Radzinsky had plans and models in the Flame. And he was upset that a hostile might have seen them.

— Even though we didn't see the Monster, we heard it. In 2007. Still haven't seen it in 1977.

— There was a woman with blondish hair standing in the shadows behind Sun in the wrecked Rec Center. I really had to look for it the second time I watched the episode. Was it deliberate? Was it someone we know?

— Frank: "I thought you trusted this guy?" Sun: "I lied."

Fun episode. Not as wonderful as "LaFleur," but I'm really enjoying the cast as undercover hippies,

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. I went back to look for the blondish woman you mentioned in the rec center. I watched the 2 scenes twice and did not see her, but did see something move behind Sun in the second scene. If it is a blondish woman, I would have to assume it is Claire.
I loved how Sawyer told off Jack. I don't care much for Jack :)

  2. I thought that Ilana said Jarrah. Sayid's last name... because Caesar, who is also middle eastern, bares a slight resemblance to Sayid.

Are we about to find out some new information about Sun and Locke being born on the island?

  4. Maybe Ben, Sun and Locke didn't go back with Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid to 1977 as their Ajira circumstances were different to their initial Oceanic flight?

    - Ben wasn't on Oceanic 815.
    - Sun was pregnant on Oceanic 815.
    - Locke was alive on Oceanic 815.

By the way, love your review Billie! I've been reading them since the start of season 1! :)

  5. Sun wasn't pregnant on the plane, she got pregnant on the island which is why Jin was so concerned for her safety. So that theory doesn't hold up.

I think we did see it actually. First you can see it pop its head out of the trees, or at least a dark patch appears anyway.
But then, when they're all in the rec room, and the camera is pointed at Christian, the door pointedly creaks and opens, and if you look at the roof, you can definitely see smoke move out of the room.

    Intriguing.

  7. Are the 316 lot actual in 2007? There was defiantly a time jump as the plane went down, one second its night, the next it’s suddenly day. Judging by the damage to the barracks they are on the island post-freighter, is it possible they are sometime in the future. Or maybe back during the three years the significant six were gone.

Maybe the reason everyone was separate is due to the Sawn/Hatch. Jack, Kate and Hurley spent of lot of time in there, no doubt being exposed to all sorts of electromagnetic time, space stuff. I can’t think Sun ever stepped inside. As for Ben? Maybe he really can’t go back to the main island. The Hydra is as far as he can go.

And where is Daniel? Walking the jungle like Kane from Kung Fu? Quantum leaping around the space time continuum? Or maybe he headed back to the mainland and invested in Star Wars merchandise. That’s what I’d do.

  8. I can't believe no one mentioned it yet, but we finally got to see them use the runway that the others were building like 4 years ago. Were they building it so that 316 could land safely? If so, that give me a chicken/egg time paradox headache.

  9. Mark,
I would assume that they're in 2007 based on the caption, which said, "30 years earlier" when it jumped from the crash victims to the Kate/Jack/etc group.

This episode was enjoyable but felt weird. I couldn't shake the feeling that I have absolutely no idea what they're DOING back on the island. Everyone is still waiting to find a purpose. Leave? Stay? They came back because Locke said everyone on the island would die, but Locke stopped the time jumps just by leaving. So what's the plan? I'm so curious! I want everyone reuinited and safe and alone, away from the Dharma Initiative, because it kills me watching these alliances self-destruct from the inside. But it wouldn't be Lost if everyone were happy.

  10. Hi Billie...I bet Sayid is going to try and kill young Ben, he hates Ben and basically thinks he is the Antichrist so thats what im thinking

  11. Billie, you wrote "The Losties all know what Ben is going to do someday"
    - but do they? WE know, because we saw in in Ben's episode, But I am not sure the losties know Ben's role in the extermination of the Dharma people.

  12. I thought Sawyer was being a jackass in his tirade, and I was chuckling at Jack's underwhelmed response to him. I think Jack's *relieved* that he isn't the leader or the hero anymore. He seemed a little pissy, then laughed, about the janitor assignment thing, but I think it also gave him a good idea that his days of leading are over--and he's NEVER liked being the leader. Ever. And I was also chuckling over how Sawyer has been echoing Jack in the past two episodes--how he's bending over backwards and taking risks to keep everyone safe, and DAMMIT DON'T YOU QUESTION ME. Hooo-hooo! This will be interesting.

I wish they'd jettison the stupid love quardrangle. That just makes the show soapy and tiresome. Though I do love the visual of the four of them being neighbors and playing canasta. That right there is sitcom spinoff material!

  13. Haha actually as nice as the double dating idea, I'd prefer if Jack, Sawyer, Kate and Juliet all took the hippie lifestyle to heart and shacked up all together! Can't get more fun than that :-) But foursomes aside, I really love how they're setting things up for the rest of the season.

But I think Jack needs to be the leader. It's just his personality. He doesn't know how not to be. And if he thinks Sawyer is going to endanger one of his people, there's no way he's just going to sit back.

Jack's condescending line about Sawyer reading a book instead of finding a solution doesn't sound to me like someone who's relieved not to be the leader anymore.

Besides, haven't all the Jack flashbacks since the beginning of the series portrayed him as a control freak with a severe God complex? I thought that was their purpose: to counterpoint Jack's heroic actions on the island with a flawed, unaltruistic motivation.

On a completely unrelated note, I just want to point out that, apart from Jin, all the Oceanic Flight 815 survivors on the 1977 photo were on Michael's list of people to bring to the Others at the end of Season 2. Coincidence?

Ooooh. spooky! There are no coincidences on Lost, are there? :)

  17. While i liked this episode, somehow it seemed a bit of a let down after LaFleur. It seemed like filler. Good filler, but filler none the less. Plus i kept thinking that if the Losties are with the Dharma Initiative when the purge happens won't they get killed too ? Is that even possible ?

  18. I love how Sawyer is coming into his own - responsibility looks SO good on him!! His leadership style is nice compared to the "frantically fix it" style Jack had/has. I love that JIM was thinking things through before taking action. Kind of like when he was setting up a con - you gotta think through ALL the angles. I hate the name "Jim", though. James and Sawyer suit him much better.

Well the purge doesn't happen until 1992, which is 15 years away. So I don't think they'll be keeping them in that timeline for that long.

  20. I think it is interesting that Sawyer recruited Juliet to deliver Ethan, but he'll be ready (or "was" ready to, depending on your perspective)to kill him for kidnapping Claire in ?season 1? I think..."Uh, uh, uh, jungle boy, don't even think about it!"

  21. I thought Sun was pregnant to another man in Korea....or did it end up being Jin on the Island?

  22. "Although if everyone would just act like a grown-up about it, Kate and Jack could move in together and go play canasta with Sawyer and Juliet every Friday night. " my thoughts exactly. juliet and james have their crap together and are leading a relatively happy little life without any mind games. kate and jack need to cut their crap and act right and not mess up J&J's good thing.

i have hopes that faraday is wrong and the future can be changed. namely, that jack as a janitor can have a positive influence on poor young ben who is psychologically abused by his drunk dad. thus helping ben grow up into a good person rather than a murderous power hungry leader.

i guess to work in the remote location of the flame station, one must be an antisocial a-hole eh? first the trigger happy Russian with more lives than a barnful of cats, now the paranoid radzinsky. or should that order be reversed?

cesear -- i don't like him. he's got too much of a commando thing going on and more of that just ain't needed right now from a newbie.

oh, and what happened to bernard and rose? i liked them. haven't seen hide nor hair of them in many a moon.

  23. Poor James. He sounded like Jack before the latter's plans went to hell. And now, James is about to experience something similar. The only thing he had led his fellow survivors into was a massive deception created by him.
