NewsFlash: Torchwood returns!

We are getting a fourth season of Torchwood! (Thanks for posting the news, Mark.) Ten episodes, starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles, and yay for that because I love them both. Apparently, Starz is going to run it in the U.S., and it might even be R-rated. Wow.

Yes, I'm definitely reviewing it. If I have to get Starz, I'll get Starz.

*happy dance*

  1. Fantastic news, but the wait will be really long.

  2. I have mixed feelings Children of Earth really soured me on Torchwood and Eve Myles played my least favorite character on the show. I don't get Starz and this isn't going to entice me to get it. I'll wait and see if I make any effort to catch this.

  3. As a non-american I'm glad that the bbc wil broadcast it as well. Furthermore it could be worse than starz, Spartacus was a delight to watch this year, and not just the violent arena scenes (the politics were great, and of course Lucy Lawless...) That and the show was picked up local as well (though I hate back-to-back runnings as they did here...

Luckily BBC england is broadcast here so I don't have to dl it tp watch it...

  4. Will be looking forward to your reviews, Billie.

Two years between seasons is certainly a long time to wait but I suppose a long wait is still better than an indefinite one. I honestly thought that Torchwood was done for good. The collapse of the Fox deal (something to be thankful for) seemed to have put the final nail in the series’ coffin.

But now it’s back and all is well with the world. I just hoping that when Jack and Gwen head off around the globe on their recruitment drive Rhys and PC Andy don’t get left behind.

  5. Hmmmm... I have mixed feelings about this news. After reading the interview with Chris Albrecht over on the Live Feed, the deal with Starz seems pretty much the same as the Fox deal. Most of the story's going to take place in the US. Only Gwen and Jack remain. The bigger budget's obviously a plus. But will it be the same show?

I'm a bit miffed at Julie Gardner and RTD. It's like, because they decided to move to LA, they've now got to make the show there. Thank goodness they've washed their hands of Doctor Who, that's all I can say :o(

  6. Starz isn't Fox. Starz had a big hit this season with the bloody, controversial "Spartacus." It could be really good news.

  7. I hope it is good news. It just feels as though they're taking the show away from its roots. That's not to say it won't work. I sincerely hope it does. I'm just worried that it won't be the same.

  8. Paul, with the corporation wide budget cuts the BBC has had to enforce lately it seems the only way to guarantee another series of Torchwood was for RTD and Julie Gardner to find an outside financer. I think it was one of their primary motives for relocating to LA in the first place.

In the interview Russell indicates that the new season will be more serialized like Children of Earth and less monster of the week like the first two seasons. This can only be a good thing. And after seeing Spartacus I seriously doubt that Starz (unlike Fox) will try to tone down the show’s content. Instead they might tone it up. Expect John Barrowman’s arse to make regular cameos. Hopefully Eve Myles’s too.

  9. By pure coincidence (or subconscious psychic powers), I just netflixed the first few discs of Torchwood Season One. My hopes are high--I hope it doesn't let me down!

  10. Josie,

Torchwood is one of those shows that gets a lot better as it goes along. The second season is much better than the first. And the third season, which is actually a five-hour miniseries and not really a season, is absolutely outstanding, one of the best things I watched last year. You don't need to watch Doctor Who to follow Torchwood.

  11. Agreed. Torchwood is definitely a ‘sit with it, it gets better’ sort of show. And prior knowledge of Doctor Who isn’t essential unless you want to understand Jack’s back-story a little better.
