It’s 2011... how did that happen? I feel as if 2010 went by in the blink of an eye, perhaps because I was distracted by the awesome TV we were treated to throughout the year. For now I’m going to focus just on Glee, because my love for it fills its own 'best of' list. Last year, my predecessor Serena Yang gave us her Top 9 of ’09, going up to episode 1.13: Sectionals. I’ll follow on with the Top 10 of ’10. Logical, no?
10. Bad Romance (1.20: "Theatricality")
You know a Glee song is good when you've watched all the live performances on YouTube. What did I like? Gaga costumes. Actual dancing. Santana in black lace. Santana’s vocals. I want her bad romance.
9. Ab-ulous Sam in gold hotpants (2.5: "The Rocky Horror Glee Show")
I know, I should be less focused on his bulletproof chest and more on his silky smooth voice, but you can't blame gravity for falling in love (or lust!).
8. Current gay issues at the forefront of the show
I’m thinking mainly of Kurt’s bullying storyline which is an incredibly important and relevant topic, especially for Glee’s demographic. They haven’t handled everything perfectly but it’s modern, sensitive and heartfelt.
7. Brittany and Mike getting to show off their incredible dance skills. My jaw is still on the floor from watching them dance to "Valerie" in 2.9: "Special Education."
6. One (1.18 "Laryngitis") My favourite song from Season One; sweet, sweet ear candy.
5. Celebrity Cameos(Namely Neil Patrick-Harris and Gwyneth Paltrow) Bring them back please?
4. Don’t Stop Believin’ (Regionals Version) (1.22: "Journey")
Well this was just an awesome performance. In the UK, part of Glee’s success was the Don’t Stop Believin’ fever that swept the clubs of the nation after the Glee version was released. Journey aren’t so well known in the UK and the song was brand new to me, as well as almost all of Glee’s younger viewers, so Glee owned it. It perfectly showed just how far New Directions had come on their ‘journey’.
3. Brittany: 'Did you know that dolphins are just gay sharks?' (1.14: "Hell-O"). I already knew that, actually. This is just one of many spectacular Brittany-isms.
2. Evil Sue
Jane Lynch must have a lot of fun playing Sue Sylvester. Her deliciously vindictive, arrogant and cutting portrayal makes me shudder with delight. Let’s have a look at some of her most memorable bon mots, surreal sayings and creative expressions of contempt:
"Oh I will bring it, William. You know what else I'm gonna to bring? I'm gonna bring some Asian cookery to wipe your head with. Cause right now you've got enough product in your hair to season a wok. " (1.14: "Hell-O")
“You think this is hard? I'm passing a gallstone as we speak! *That's* hard!” (1.15: "The Power of Madonna")
[to Kurt] “So you like show tunes. It doesn't mean you're gay. It means you're awful.” (1.18: "Laryngitis")
"You know, for me, trophies are like herpes. You can try to get rid of them, but they just keep coming. You know why? Sue Sylvester has hourly flare-ups of burning, itchy, highly contagious talent." (1.21: "Funk")
1. Teenage Dream – Blaine and the Warblers (2.6: "Never Been Kissed"). Before I saw this scene, I wasn’t a big fan of the song. Now, I’ve worn out my iPod putting the Glee version on repeat. The arrangement was so good even Katy Perry gleeked out about it. It was also performed beautifully by the unreasonably cute Darren Criss (who has been promoted to series regular SQUEEEE), as well as fitting perfectly with the theme of the episode. Glee’s version of Teenage Dream topped the Billboard chart; the first time a Glee song has done so. In its first week of digital sales it also outsold Don’t Stop Believin’ which got to number two in 2009. Now that’s impressive.
I couldn’t fit her into the list, but an honourable mention for Sue’s wonderful acolyte Becky. Anyone who dresses as Sue for Halloween has got my respect. "Give me some chocolate or I will cut you."
Bring on more Glee! I’d like to request the return of Sunshine from 2.1: Audition, more Blaine, more a cappella, more zany Sue schemes, a continued focus on music that fits into the plot/theme, and less character assassination of poor Mr Shue.
