The MTV Movie Awards

Just when we thought the awards season was over for a while, MTV handed out its Movie Awards Sunday night. I always get a kick out of these awards as they don’t take themselves too seriously and the categories are a welcome change to the usual. I also watch these every year to catch up on all the pop culture I tend to miss.

An example of what I had missed was the host herself. Rebel Wilson is a young woman who had not hit my radar as I have not seen Pitch Perfect. I was very impressed with her singing voice, less so with her presenting skills. The jokes were crass and humorless and, unfortunately, she seemed out of her depth on stage. Her filler stuff was just painful to watch.

There were the usual musical numbers. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed “Can’t Hold Us” which I loved. Any song that gets Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson dancing in their seats deserves to be downloaded. I did so. We also got to see long previews of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and World War Z.

On a final note, I do not recommend watching the entire show streamed on MTV’s site. Instead of just streaming the show, they have posted 52 clips, some of which are only a minute of so. This would be all right except that before every clip, I had to sit through a thirty second promo for the new Star Trek movie. The same promo 52 times. Argh!

So, while the show itself was nothing special, the golden popcorn went to:

Movie of the Year: Marvel’s The Avengers
Joss Whedon is a force. Lovely acceptance speech in which he gave everyone else credit for how good the film is. I love this man.

Best Male Performance: Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook
Yippee for Will! Lovely acceptance speech about the fact that more soldiers commit suicide than die in battle. This is, unfortunately, true and I’m glad he is shedding some light on the problem.

Best Female Performance: Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook
Not broadcast.

Best On-Screen Duo: Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane for Ted
Not broadcast.

Best Hero: Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins
Over 3 million people voted and he got over half of them.

Best Villain: Tom Hiddleston for Marvel’s The Avengers
I’ve said it before, but the Brits do acceptance speeches well. This one was excellent.

Best Kiss: Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook
Jennifer Lawrence was not at the awards, so we missed the traditional replay of the kiss. Will, I mean Bradley, was gracious and thanked the fans for making the film what it was.

Best Fight: Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner for Marvel’s The Avengers
Joss Whedon accepted the award. What an amazing guy. He was articulate and humble.

Best Shirtless Performance: Taylor Lautner for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part Two
All I’m going to say about this is that he won instead of Christian Bale. Huh?

Breakthrough Performance: Rebel Wilson for Pitch Perfect
Her acceptance speech ranked up there with her presenting skills.

Best Scared-as-Shit Performance: Suraj Sharma for Life of Pi
Not broadcast.

Best WTF Moment: Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson for Django Unchained
Introduced by Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, their introduction was so off color that it had to be completely beeped out. The audience was visibly cringing; no one was laughing. The winners, however, were their usual awesome selves.

Best Musical Moment: The Cast of Pitch Perfect
One would hope that a song would accompany this category. One would hope in vain. More inarticulate rambling by the winners.

Comedic Genius Award: Will Ferrell
I am not a fan. The clips they showed and his acceptance speech did nothing to change my mind.

MTV Trailblazer Award: Emma Watson
I am a huge fan of his young woman and she didn’t disappoint. Her speech was very sweet and charming.

MTV Generation Award: Jamie Foxx
Presented by the gorgeous Kerry Washington, the clips they showed proved just how versatile and wonderful this actor is. I love this guy, but his acceptance speech showed that he is much better when reading from a script.

  1. Well I'm glad Bradley Cooper finally won SOMETHING for Silver Linings. I'm sorry but Jennifer Lawrence is so overrated. She won every award known to man this year but this guy was outstanding in my opinion and the real star player of the movie!

Very fun recap Chris. MTV didn't air them this year in Lebanon. I used to be so amused by this award show. So glad Joss won :) If only the Oscars weren't such snobs and appreciated his brilliance!

  2. Bradley Cooper was nowhere NEAR J-Law's performance Nadim, I'm sorry. He was good, but she pretty much dumped all over him in terms of acting ability and all that.

  3. I respectfully disagree Panda. I thought Jennifer played a very showy performance whereas Cooper was both poignant and powerful. She just did nothing for me. Obviously I'm in the minority here.
