New Shows: December 29, 2013-January 3, 2014

The last week with a bit of a breather before the new January shows kick off and many of our old favorites come back from hiatus.

New Shows: December 22 - 28, 2013

As the year draws to a close, the number of new shows is slowing down a bit. I guess the networks understand that most of us are spending the holidays binge-watching shows that have already aired. Enjoy whatever it is that you are watching and have a very happy and safe 2014.

New Shows: December 16-21, 2013

Merry Christmas! Because of where we are in the calendar, many of this week’s new shows were retrospective. As a result, this week’s column will be a bit of a stroll down memory lane.

Doux News Shows: December 8-15, 2013

This Week: Psych -- Cancellations -- Sesame Street -- Doctor Who -- Community -- House of Cards -- Some New Show Reviews -- This Week in Cats

New Shows (2013): December 1 - 7

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things.

Winter 2013-2014 Premiere Schedule

Wallace Stevens said it best:

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

New Shows (2013): November 24 - 30

Happy Hanukkah! A week filled with music for a change. The New Shows color code: red means don’t bother; blue means maybe; green means good; magenta means great.

New Shows (2013): November 16-23

Happy Thanksgiving! If you are looking for a new show to watch during the long weekend, there are some good choices this week.

New Shows (2013): The JFK Assassination

“Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans…
And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you —- ask what you can do for your country.”
JFK Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961

Fifty years ago yesterday, America changed forever. The innocence and overall optimism of the 1950s came to an abrupt end in Dallas as an assassin’s bullet killed one of the most beloved Presidents this country had ever known. Young, handsome, and charismatic, John Fitzgerald Kennedy had represented the future. It was bright. But, even men regarded almost as demigods are human, a fact that was proven all too clearly when someone shot Kennedy twice on November 22, 1963. This one act ushered in a new world, in three very important ways.

New Shows (2013): November 4 - 9

Not a whole lot to write about this week, but a couple of shows worth checking out.

The Britannia Awards 2013

The Britannia Awards are presented by BAFTA Los Angeles, to honor "individuals and companies who have dedicated their careers or corporate missions to advancing the art-forms of the moving image." Although not as well known as some other awards that we cover on the site, these are an interesting change to the norm.

New Shows (2013): October 28-November 3

Watch The Returned to see why I chose this picture.
It's been a while, but we finally have a new show worth dropping everything to watch.

New Shows (2013): October 21-27

Happy Halloween!
May all your treats be sweet.
Now that the premiere season is more or less behind us, there are far fewer shows to talk about; at least, shows I am going to spend some time with. As is becoming the norm, the best shows this week were the documentaries.

New Shows (2013): October 14-20

For a change, there was quite a bit of good new television this week, including one show I am convinced will become a holiday classic. The color code: red means don’t bother; blue means maybe; green means good; magenta means great.

New Shows (2013): October 7-13

Although the networks have premiered (and, in at least one case, already canceled) most of their new shows, some are still trickling in. This was a fantastic week for documentaries. If you like that type of show, read on. The color code: red means don’t bother; blue means maybe; green means good; magenta means great.

New Shows (2013): October 2 - 6

More new shows launched into our world this week. We are coming to the end of the fall premieres (there are only a handful next week) and, unsurprisingly, not a single network show has jumped off the screen this year for me. There are some that I will give a few more episodes of my life to, but none about which I am overly optimistic. As always, the best shows seem to come from PBS, BBC America, and Showtime.

New Shows (2013): September 27-October 1

I am trying to catch up on all the new shows, but there seems to be an extraordinary number of them this year. Here is the next batch. The color code: red means don’t bother; blue means maybe; green means good; magenta means great.

New Shows (2013): September 23-26

My other life has taken over a bit lately, and I have fallen way behind on the new shows. Because so many are debuting these days, I don’t want to wait forever before posting. The next few columns, therefore, will be a bit catch as catch can. The color code: red means don’t bother; blue means maybe; green means good; magenta means great.

New Shows (2013): September 16-22

Fox kicked off its season this week with mixed success. Otherwise, it was relatively quiet as we all hold our breath for next week’s onslaught of the new network shows. The color code: red means don’t bother; blue means maybe; green means good; magenta means great.
