Coming Soon to a Screen Near You

Mark Greig wrote a wonderful post previewing all the new Fall 2013 shows that we’re getting (semi-)excited about. It’s an odd bunch: the new season is still grappling with a Lostless world (how many years has it been now?), but seems to be dealing with the lack of brilliant ideas by taking refuge in period dramas and buddy-cop situations. Which show are you looking forward to most?

Let’s Call It MASH

The coolest upcoming show, Joss Whedon’s Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, has released a preview:

Although Mark and Billie have the good sense to abbreviate this show’s unwieldy title to just SHIELD (because no one is still watching the Michael Chiklis cop drama, and context clues are like manna from heaven), I’d like to vote for calling it MASh. Because that won’t be confused with any other past, great shows known for combining comedy and tragedy.

Speaking of confusing: what’s Agent Coulson doing there? Joss Whedon dropped some very Whedony hints about how that all would work in an interview with the LA Times. Here’s a snippet from the MAShter himself:

“It came up, ‘What about a S.H.I.E.L.D. show?’ And I said, ‘Oh, that makes perfect sense.’ And then, you know, ‘What about Coulson?’ And obviously, the first question, was, ‘Will this upset the integrity of what we did in The Avengers?’ You don’t want to do that. I worked in comics and TV and fantasy for a long time, and I know that there’s a right way and a wrong way to do stuff like that….It’s like, ‘If we were going to have Coulson, how would we even do it?’ Well, we’d do exactly this. That’s what I pitched to [actor Clark Gregg] on the phone, that’s what’s in the script, word for word, and it’s all about earning everything, so that people don’t feel that you lied, or that you pulled one over on them, that you have an explanation that you buy. Because at the end of the day, the S.H.I.E.L.D. show, it works.”

The CW Shuffle

Baby network The CW has moved its schedule around in a pathetic, mewling attempt to get me to pull my hair out completely. The new CW fall TV schedule looks like this, and will leave me with tresses beautifully intact:

Monday: Hart of Dixie, Beauty and the Beast
Tuesday: The Originals, Supernatural
Wednesday: Arrow, The Tomorrow People
Thursday: The Vampire Diaries, Reign (until cancelled due to silliness)
Friday: The Carrie Diaries, America’s Next Top Model

Nikita will return mid-season for a few episodes that, I assume, are meant to help the show conclude.

Why We Should Skip World War Z

World War Z author Max Brooks has admitted that the upcoming Brad Pitt film has nothing to do with the book: “I knew they were going to rewrite it. I grew up in Hollywood. I knew it was going to go through a million changes…I cannot guarantee that the movie will be the book that they love. And I'm in no position to tell people to see this movie or not see it. If I'm asked I say: See the movie as a movie and judge it as a movie.”

This Minute Eon in Horology

Aside from new Fall 2013 shows it's been a slow week in TV News, and I couldn't find a cool cat video. So instead I’ll send you over to Wired magazine for a fun two-part feature on watches and the people who love them. This article describes trends in high-priced, high-concept watches. It sounds boring, but isn’t: the article talks about the passion that meticulous watchmakers bring to their complicated craft--so complicated that they sometimes require rented time on a supercomputer. If that sounds a bit too esoteric, though, you might enjoy this heist story about the theft of Marie Antoinette’s watch and the attempts to track it down.

  1. I should take credit for that SHIELD abbreviation comment, but honesty compels me to mention that I think Mark Greig said it first. :)

That paragraph about the CW's schedule made me laugh. I was doing the same thing. They're moving Supernatural *again*?

For me, the big news this week is that Joss Whedon finally got a Twitter account.

    https://twitter.com/JossActual

Which means the snarky and occasionally unpleasant Whedonesque can no longer wield its power as the Joss Whedon substitute.

  2. Did I? I'm not exactly sure I did, but I'll happily accept the credit anyway.

  4. I will admit that the tidal wave of zombies looks super cool, but it's so disappointing that they had to use this series of all series to do that effect. Hasn't Walking Dead shown any of these Hollywood types that the good old fashioned shamblers make for exciting stuff too?

I've never read World War Z but I'm fairly certain is was nothing like this. To think they kept all the die hard fans salivating at the mouths for so long just to sorta butcher what made them fans in the first place. What a pity.

  5. There's already a full trailer for M.A.S.H.(I.E.L.D.) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PerIAuv27SQ. It has more talking, less exploding things than the promo.
