Teen Wolf: Lunar Ellipse

“Is this about to get really violent?”

‘Lunar Ellipse’ was a fitting end to the first half of the season. Story lines were tied up and given resolution, and almost everything that came up during the season was brought together in a fun, explosive and crazy way, which is definitely in keeping with the past two Teen Wolf finales we’ve seen.

There were a few fun call backs to the past at the start of this episode. I loved that the location of the sacrifices was a place that tied Allison, Stiles and Scott together. We even got a chance to see the crazy Mrs. Argent again, and that’s never a bad thing. It was a nice way of remembering where the show started, now especially since Scott has finally become a full Alpha.

This show has definitely come a long way, but I’m glad that one of the show’s first big villains is making a comeback. Peter’s been lurking in the background a lot, and I enjoy his sarcasm too much to have him relegated to supporting act for much longer. His declaration of power after killing Jennifer was completely over the top, but I was just so happy to see him become a major player again to care too much about it.

Jennifer dying at the hands of Peter was a little odd, but her story was definitely brought full circle. The way she took down Kali was fitting, and kind of brilliant. The visuals in that scene alone were amazing on their own, with the broken shards of glass floating, then tearing Kali to pieces. It’s also fitting that she would die in such a brutal way. Jennifer may not have gotten to Deucalion, but she brought down the woman directly responsible for what happened to her, even if her joy was short lived.

I was kind of rooting for her to off Deucalion in a way. I’m surprised that Derek’s only way to weaken Jennifer was to help Deucalion regain his sight, but it made sense considering what he’s just learnt about the loss of power when you heal someone.

Teen Wolf Season 3A has been a lot of fun. So far, the show has earned its boosted episode order, with just a few missteps here and there. ‘Lunar Ellipse’ was the perfect capper to all that, and a great way of getting the show into a great place to start the second half of the season. Now that Teen Wolf is going into its first non-summer episode run, I’m glad that it’s proven that it’s still at the top of its game.

4.5 out of 5 floating pieces of broken glass.

Plus

I’m glad the twins didn’t die.

The arrival of Scott’s father was really overshadowed, but I assume he’ll be a big part of 3B.

He Said, She Said

Lydia: "What do you want from me?"
Jennifer: "I want you to do what you do best, Lydia. I want you to scream."
It was cool that Jennifer used Lydia to get Derek's attention. Hopefully her abilities will be explored more in the next part of the season.

Cora: “If you want to fight and die for something, that’s fine with me, but do it for something meaningful.”

  1. Finally caught up, after the mess of the cable switchover. It was definitely an enjoyable finale, or mid-season finale, with lots of big fight scenes and much resolution. I don't think I was on board for a lot of the season, but it definitely ended well. I was also glad the twins made it, as well as all the parents this time. Loved Stiles saving the day with his baseball bat. :)

And I'm glad we finally know what's going on with Lydia. She's a favorite of mine, and it'll be interesting to see what they do with her.

  2. I thought this first half of season 3 was a little bit muddled but still strong. My specific problem was that it seemed like the writers were undecided about whether we should hate or sympathize with both Deucalion and Jennifer in the last few episodes. That being said, I kinda like that Deucalion survived. Gideon Emery is one of my favorite character actors(and seriously, does he not have the COOLEST voice around?), so if the writers come up with some interesting material for him I'm sure he'd do a great job with it.

While I'm on the subject of Deucalion, how frelling AWESOME was that gradual transformation of his in the climactic fight? Hats off to the VFX guys on that one. I understand they don't usually show the wolves actually morphing in order to keep the budget down, but I'm glad they opened the pursestrings for that one.

Still not buying Allison & Isaac as a couple. Does anyone really think that's going to last?

I hope it's not the last we've seen of Derek & Cora. The dynamic between Derek & Scott should be interesting now that the Alpha/Beta roles are reversed. I wonder if Derek would let Scott be HIS Alpha, and join his pack.

With Scott's dad in town, I hope that means we'll see more of his mom. She's always been fun ever since the show started.

So now Beacon Hill is a beacon again. Raise your hand if your mind immediately went to "Hellmouth". Oh good, it's not just me. I suppose it's as good an excuse as any for them to have new monsters come to town. Let's see what they come up with :)
