Here we go! The 2015 awards season kicked off tonight with The People's Choice Awards. Unlike the others that we here at Doux will be covering as the winter carries on, the winners of these awards have been voted on by the public, not the various industries represented. As a result, television shows, movies, and people who are often overlooked by the Oscars/Emmys/Golden Globes/Grammys get to say that they are winners.
The show itself was actually painful to watch. Whoever was hired to write the jokes missed the mark entirely. Hosted by Anna Faris and Allison Janney, the two women tried, but had nothing to work with. The presenters ranged from bad to very bad. Even worse, as the evening wore on, everyone realized how bad it was and began trying too hard. I was glad to see the end of it.
Several of "our" shows won, but very few made it on the air. As you can imagine from the sheer number of categories below, the broadcast had to choose which awards to air. These were the lucky few, or at least the ones where the winner was there to receive the award:
FAVORITE MOVIE ACTOR: Robert Downey Jr.
I love this man, but his acceptance speech was very odd. I hope he's still on the wagon...
FAVORITE ACTION MOVIE ACTOR: Chris Evans
Because, yes.
FAVORITE COMEDIC MOVIE ACTOR: Adam Sandler
There is only one response to this win -- WTF? He stopped being funny about two decades ago.
FAVORITE COMEDIC MOVIE ACTRESS: Melissa McCarthy
I love her (even more now that I'm a Gilmore Girls fan). Her acceptance speech was very sweet.
FAVORITE DRAMATIC MOVIE ACTOR: Robert Downey Jr.
No kidding.
FAVORITE DRAMATIC MOVIE ACTRESS: Chloƫ Grace Moretz
Wonderfully articulate. It must be said, however, that she needs a new stylist.
FAVORITE THRILLER MOVIE: Gone Girl
Not my choice, but all right.
FAVORITE TV SHOW: The Big Bang Theory
Again.
FAVORITE COMEDIC TV ACTRESS: Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting
What a shock. That's my sarcastic voice.
FAVORITE NETWORK TV DRAMA: Grey's Anatomy
That win, I did not expect.
FAVORITE DRAMATIC TV ACTRESS: Ellen Pompeo
Not a complete surprise after the win above.
FAVORITE CABLE TV ACTOR: Matt Bomer
A tad ironic as his show was recently cancelled.
FAVORITE CABLE SCI-FI/FANTASY TV SHOW: Outlander
As my favorite show of the year was not nominated, I will be happy (very happy) with this one.
FAVORITE COMPETITION TV SHOW: The Voice
Whatever.
FAVORITE DAYTIME TV HOST: Ellen DeGeneres
Fifteen (15!) times this woman has won.
FAVORITE TV ICON: Betty White
Is there any other choice? 93 years old and still among the funniest women ever. She got an enormous reception; the applause literally stopped the show.
FAVORITE ACTRESS IN A NEW TV SERIES: Viola Davis
I don't watch her show, but she is fabulous.
FAVORITE MALE COUNTRY ARTIST: Hunter Hayes
I love his songs, so I was all right with this one.
FAVORITE COUNTRY GROUP: Lady Antebellum
What I'm really needing now
Is a double shot of Crown
Chase that disco ball around
'Til I don't remember
Go until they cut me off
Wanna get a little lost
In the noise, in the lights
Hey bartender.
As a sometimes bartender, these lyrics resonate a great deal with me.
FAVORITE HIP-HOP ARTIST: Iggy Azalea
Obviously, this poor girl had no idea she would win. She was very gracious, but flustered. She got to perform as well.

So, there it is. The first of the season. What do you think of the winners? Happy or not? Let us know in the comments.
ChrisB is a freelance writer who never ceases to be amazed about what the people will vote for.
Who are these people who keep voting for Beauty and the Beast? It beat out Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Once Upon a Time, Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries. All shows with bigger fan-bases and viewing figures. Are Kristin Kreuk's parents just stuck at their computers 24/7 block voting for their little girl?
ReplyDeleteMany observers believe, Mark, that block voting does happen. For whatever reason, people are willing to sit at their computers for hours at a time and continuously vote for their favorites. Rather mars the win, I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteMore than one winner who was on air last night reckoned it was his or her parents, block voting, that forced the win...
The popularity of Kristin Kreuk is a complete mystery to me. I've started to believe that she casts a spell over certain viewers and appears interesting and exciting, but the rest of us see her as she really is. And then I feel sorry for how much I picked on her in my Smallville reviews. It's a vicious circle.
ReplyDeleteThat favorite Sci-Fi actor category is ridiculous. For me, it's the whole ball of wax. Very amusing rundown, Chris. I'm so glad you watched it so I wouldn't have to. :)
Don't feel bad about Kristin Kreuk, she has her fans. I hated her Lana, but it was likely just as much the writers fault for making her seem soo perfect when she really wasn't.
ReplyDeleteChloe was my favorite and she did what Lana couldn't.
Sigh, still bitter about Smallville.
