Happy Pluto Flyby Day!

This morning, New Horizons did a flyby of the dwarf planet Pluto and its teeny tiny moons with underworld names. We won't have the pictures back until tomorrow, but as a lifelong sci-fi geek, there's something about adding this last farflung heavenly body to our list of accomplishments that is really getting to me. (The other big thing I am so looking forward to is when people finally walk on Mars.)

Here's one of the "heart." I love that there's a heart on Pluto.

Anyone else all geeked out and excited? Post a comment!

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. Yes! Very much so! Love this project. I'm also rooting for more research with Saturns and Jupters moons :)

  2. Agree with everything you said. I'm loving the pictures that have been coming back from New Horizons. PLUTO BABY!!!!! Woo hoo!

I'd also like to see Uranus and Neptune orbiters like Cassini.

We have accomplished SO MUCH these past few decades in astronomy and space exploration. Exciting times indeed.

  4. I'm super excited too!

It turns out that Charon has canyons that are probably 6 kilometres deep. And Pluto has mountains 3500 metres high! Amazing!

  5. And I really can't wait to see what they discover about the ice mountains, and that strange mountain in a depression. If any of you are into astronomy, check out Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy blog - he's following all of this. www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy.html
