About Us: Billie Doux

Here's the next entry in our holiday Q&A – Billie Doux! Technically, since I came up with the questions and then answered them, it's a Billie Q and a Billie A.

What area of the world do you live in, and what do you do in real life? (Because we all know you don't make any money doing this.)

I'm an art librarian. Or I was, back in Los Angeles where there are many major museums. After a lot of years in Los Angeles, I moved to Reading, a city in southeastern Pennsylvania, to be near family. It's been awhile since I moved here, but I think I'm still adjusting because Reading still feels like the back of beyond. It doesn't have a decent art museum, much less a good-sized freeway. Can you tell that I miss L.A.?

What show or shows are you covering for Doux Reviews? Why those particular shows?

Well, there's Supernatural, which I've been covering for fourteen freaking years. (Who knew?) I'm also reviewing The Handmaid's Tale because the way it portrays misogyny hits me where I live, and not in a good way. During the summer, I was trying to finish the last two seasons of The Wire but now I'm starting to think that particular show is so good that might be too much for me. I'm also working on and off on the 1963 science fiction series The Outer Limits when I have time, because it's fun to write about.

Which TV character do you identify with the most, and why?

Oh, my. I still have to go back to Willow Rosenberg because of nerd-dom, straight A's in school, and that time I used my power as a witch to nearly end the world.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?

Definitely time travel, but I don't have a funny or droll reason since there's someone I'd like to go back in time to save. I also find flying appealing. I used to dream I could fly, and in those dreams I always seemed to be hovering over one particular town. I have no idea what town it was. Every now and then I think I'm going to stumble over that town when I'm driving through a place I've never been, and that I'd go, wow, this place looks familiar. But I never have. Not yet, anyway.

What's your favorite television show of all time? (Okay, top few will do if you can't narrow it down to one.)

Definitely Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's the reason I started writing reviews, which means that Buffy is also the reason Doux Reviews exists at all. Before Buffy, I was absolutely nuts about Babylon 5. And before that, it was Star Trek: The Next Generation. Six of us here at Doux have been reviewing Next Gen for the past few years, and we plan to finish the final season this coming summer.

I'm also extremely fond of Supernatural, which is a good thing since I've been reviewing it for fourteen freaking years.

What is your favorite reality show, and why?

I like home improvement shows because they always have a happy ending, but The Great British Baking Show is my favorite – or it was. It just had this lovely feel, gentle and genuine humor, this spirit of friendly and joyous competition, plus I wanted to taste absolutely everything I saw. Or I did. I decided to boycott the show after it lost three of its four hosts because it just doesn't feel the same anymore.

Marvel or DC?

While I enjoy the Marvel movies, some more than others, DC feels like home to me. I don't care about Batwoman. I want The CW to give Tyler Hoechlin his own Superman series right the heck now.

Cats or dogs? Or is there some other animal involved?

I've had cats, or they've had me, since I was ten. Most have been gray, which is why there's a gray cat at the top right hand corner of Doux Reviews. I lost my beloved cat Fox last February, and after many catless months, I adopted two shelter kittens in October. They are currently raucous home-destroying maniacs, but I'm sure they'll eventually calm down.

If you're interested, here's more about my kittens in the three most recent posts on my personal blog. There are cute photos, of course. Can a kitten take a bad photo?

What random skill would our readers be surprised to know you have?

I play piano and guitar, or I used to; I'm out of practice. I paint landscapes and still lifes in acrylics. And I can recite all fifty states in alphabetical order because of a song I had to learn in fifth grade called "Fifty Nifty United States From Thirteen Original Colonies."

What is your most wished for holiday gift?

A chance to do some serious traveling. That's where the being-able-to-fly thing would come in handy, I suppose.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell our readers?

Just a huge thank you for sticking with us. I appreciate every single hit and I read every single comment. Some of you are new, but others have been with me a long time, even going back to before the site began, when I was posting my Buffy and Lost reviews on several other sites. Seeing so many familiar names posting comments makes Doux Reviews feel less like an entertainment site and more like a community. I love writing reviews and posting them here, and I doubt I'll ever tire of it.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And may all your tribbles be little ones.

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. I was a librarian with a specialty in art. I stopped working and came back east because I have a close relative with Alzheimers and needed to be here.

  2. I learned that song too (also in 5th grade) but I always get fuzzy on D-I so I end up missing a few

  3. And now we know . . . the rest of the story!

Have a Merry Christmas, and thank you for all you "doux" on this site.

LOL. My youngest one has never moved past this phase. It's a delight.

I think it's interesting that you are an art librarian who has moved to a city called Reading. A synchronicity that borders on predestination, one might say. (:

  6. Actually, Reading is pronounced "redding," like the color red. My mother is from here. So is Taylor Swift. :)

As someone who spends way too much time doing serious traveling, could I recommend teleportation instead of flying? The ability to just instantly transport oneself elsewhere... That would be life changing for me! Am so fed up with airplanes!!!

Late to the party, but am catching up and having so much fun with these profiles! Great idea Billie!!! :)

PS: I haven't seen one for ChrisB, is she no longer active/reviewing on the site? Since when? Man it's been a long time since I've been a regular visitor!!! :(

  8. CrazyCris, enjoying your comments and you're right about teleportation. :)

And yes, ChrisB is no longer reviewing for us.

  9. Billie I'd take a regular old transporter too! Science or magic "superpowers", just help me get rid of airplanes!!! :p

  10. I was just thinking of you Billie as a librarian, as I read the Jasper Fforde novel, "The Woman Who Died A Lot", which is set in a world where books are taken VERY seriously. A quote:

"The dismantling of SO-27 had some peculiar and unforeseen consequences, not least the legalizing of lethal force within libraries “for the maintenance of the collections and public order.” Originally intended as a deterrent to thieves, the legislation quickly became known as the “Shush Law” when overenthusiastic librarians invoked a “violent intervention” for loud talking. Libraries have never been quieter, and theft and vandalism dropped by 72 percent."

SO-27, FYI, was the Secret Services branch responsible for investigating literary crimes. By the way, as chief librarian do you authorize dawn raids by the Special Library Services to recover overdue books?

  11. The Jasper Fforde novels are amazing. I should re-read those!

  12. Yeah, I'm a big ffan of Fforde. Josie, have you read Shades of Grey (not to be confused with 50 shades!)? It's a little different but excellent, and he's finally announced a release date for the sequel in Feb 2024.

  13. Magritte, yes I have! I didn't like it as much as his Thursday Next series, but it was fascinating in its own way. I'll definitely have to re-read it before the sequel comes out.
I tried his fairy-tale/nursery rhyme novels and they just didn't work for me.
