Oh, I cannot tell you how good it is to have this show back on my screen. We're back, people! And everything is actually okay.
One of my biggest worries going into this season is that it wouldn't feel like Lucifer. This is a show with a rather unique tone, and I had no idea how switching to Netflix might affect that. Happily, I think I can say that this still feels like Lucifer, clunky exposition and shot of Tom Ellis' bum aside. We had Lucifer going to Linda and taking her advice in the completely wrong way, fun character dynamics, and a murder case that echoed the central theme of the week way too strongly. What more could you want?
I will say that I am a little disappointed that we didn't pick up exactly where season three left off with Chloe seeing the Devil Face for the first time, although I can see why we picked up a month later instead. I wanted to see more of Chloe's immediate reaction to the news, especially given the reveal at the end that confirmed what I expected all episode: that everything is definitely not okay.
Chloe is not okay with Lucifer being the actual Lucifer. Is this the first time that someone hasn't been okay with the reveal? Sure, Linda was freaked out for an episode, but she came around very quickly. Chloe isn't just going to come around. She's scared. I don't think that she's disgusted by Lucifer like Dan implies, but she's definitely scared.
Is her plan with this mysterious priest going to be to kill Lucifer? We got a nice, subtle reminder that Chloe makes him vulnerable when he got a bullet to the hand, and that would fit into the whole "this is what's best for everything" speech that the priest gave Chloe. It just feels so cliche. Maybe her goal is to redeem him and turn him human? But in that case, why wouldn't she let Maze see Trixie?
I am very glad that those two got to make up, however. Maze is simply a completely different person around Trixie, and their hug may have been one of my favorite parts of the episode. I'm also very glad that Maze and Linda are back to being close friends. And that Maze and Lucifer are friends again. Honestly, I'm just glad that Maze is back to who she was pre-Pierce. I've missed her.
I'm also glad that Amenadiel is back. When he flew up to heaven last season, I thought that that would be the end of his character. He seemed very lost this episode, trying to find someone that he could help but being rebuffed every time. At least, until he talked to Dan. Dan is probably the one character who is very obviously and explicitly not okay following Charlotte's death, and I'm glad that both Chloe and Amenadiel are there for him. Especially since he and Lucifer are apparently no longer friends. (Noooooooo!)
Random Thoughts
Chloe and Trixie were traveling Europe for a month. That's fun.
Hey, we opened with a musical number. Lucifer knows the way to my heart.
Yes, that robber in the opening is the same one that appeared in the first episodes of both seasons two and three. This might be one of my favorite reoccurring callbacks of the series.
We didn't really get a lot of Ella, but she seems to be having a crisis of faith. It was very sweet that Lucifer told her that was God's loss.
Chloe got the episode title this time.
One of the best parts about Lucifer moving to Netflix is that I don't have to wait a week to see what happens next. I love the binge format.

Oh I was so apprehensive that this show would be different on Netflix, too. Not to worry. I'm so happy to have it back. Even though Chloe isn't okay. But that's okay. If everything was perfect, it wouldn't be Lucifer.
ReplyDeleteI always love the Angelino jokes, like the avocado honey. And Maze hugging Trixie. And Amenadiel hugging Dan and telling him that Charlotte was in Heaven.
Minor spoilers for the rest of the season: we see A LOT of that bum. That's really the only appreciable difference between Netflix!Lucifer and Network!Lucifer.
ReplyDeleteI was expected Amenediel gone too. Glad he's not but is DB Woodside thinner? He looked less than well to me. Hope I'm wrong.
I love that they were just like um you know all that characterization for Maze we did that you hated? That's gone she's fine now. It's sloppy and I don't care I'm so happy to have her back. She has such great relationships with Linda and Trixie. I didn't care for Maze in the beginning but now she's one of my favorite parts of the show.
I thought it was annoyingly anticlimactic to have Chloe be so chill about Lucifer's big reveal and I was really glad when it turned out to be a misdirect.
Is it just me or does Tom Ellis look older this season? I think they're dyeing his beard too dark. And Lauren looks more pinched and Botoxed. I wish they would stop trying to look younger and just let nature take its course. Oh well, overall I agree, the clunky exposition is back as is most everything else. Maze is herself again and although I dislike that Dan is not friends with Lucifer, I'm hoping that will change in time.

And I appreciate Chloe's concerned reaction to the big reveal. It's a very reasonable reaction, and one I thought the episode hinted at nicely when she told people she and Ella had been traveling in just "Europe," but then clarified they'd spent a lot of time in Rome when talking to Dan.
Manipool, I think this episode (and the next, which I have also watched) is lit a bit differently, or perhaps filmed differently, than previous seasons. Everyone looks a bit less airbrushed, even Maze. I like it!
(And is that priest the guy from Outlander?! No, not the guy from Outlander. One of the other ones.)
