Lucifer: Expire Erect

Review by An Honest Fangirl

"I can't lose him. Not after we just found each other again."

Looking at all of the episode titles this season, I was really curious how they were going to slip this one in. And of course it was Lucifer that said it.

We have a lot to unpack here, huh? Shall we start with Lucifer and Chloe and work our way down?

It's not surprising given the rocky state of Lucifer and Chloe's relationship that he would attempt to fully cut ties and find closure to their relationship. He likes things to have clean and neat answers, and One Last Case is a very clean and neat answer. But of course, life doesn't work out like that. You can't just end a relationship like that unilaterally. There's no closure in that for the other person.

And it was very clear that Chloe didn't like the idea of their partnership ending. She specifically found a way to draw Lucifer into the case through the use of his love of classic cars. It was fascinating watching Chloe's face throughout the episode. She was clearly unhappy and hurt that Lucifer would be leaving, and it almost seemed to be distracting her from the case. It was only after Eve gave her a pep talk that Chloe seemed to fully get her mojo back.

Much like Ella, I simply just can't hate Eve. There's something just so innocent and pure about her and how she interacts with the world. She's very genuine in all of her emotions, which isn't something that we really have on this show. I didn't doubt for a moment that she was truly excited to meet Ella, and I also didn't doubt for a moment that what she told Chloe was true.

It'll be interesting to see how her perception of Chloe shifts. Despite Lucifer's attempts at closure, he still obviously cares about Chloe, especially once he realized that she was willing to potentially sacrifice herself to protect him. (A nice parallel to the ax scene a few episodes ago.) If Chloe ends up pulling Lucifer away from Eve, then I can't see her being very happy about it. And I get the feeling that her anger will be like all of her other emotions: pure and unfiltered.

The person that I'm mostly concerned about is Ella. She's spiraling hard. We've gotten the sense that she was trying to fill the gap that faith left in her life with something, but I didn't expect her to turn to hard drugs. It's a good thing that she told that to Dan as opposed to anyone else. Out of everyone in the precinct, he's probably most likely to be understanding. Also, how sad is it that Ella asked for a sign from God, and then decided that that meant that God didn't exist? I wanted her to get her faith back, but it's still too early in the season for that.

Random Thoughts

Eve is perfectly willing to go to Hell if it means continuing to spend time with Lucifer. Please don't let that be foreshadowing.

Dan seems to be backpedaling a bit from the slip into darkness that he had recently. Let's see if that sticks.

The opening to this episode was great. Especially once you find out that only one person is currently on drugs in that scene.

  1. Luci had a fight with his girlfriend and started banging her older relative. Just saying.

Ella shifts toward a Hollywood atheist.

The start of the episode was carefully filmed so that it resembled a dream sequence. It couldn't be anything else, so, of course, it was something else.

  2. I have to say that Ella stoned, first on molly then on coke, was really, really funny. Possibly Aimee Garcia's funniest performance yet.

I can't help liking Eve, too. Which makes all of the love triangle stuff easier to bear.

  3. I have no idea how Tom Ellis gets away with his naughty lines. But boy does he. The title line uttered while watching Eve kiss Ella..wow.
I like Eve, it's okay to do so. The actress just has this cute innocent vibe.
Ella stoned and defusing the bomb was too funny.

  4. I'm just going to say it was a super episode all the way round. Loving it and hate to see it end, but on the other hand, I would hate for it to wear out it's welcome. Oh, and I just found out Ms. Garcia was on my other favorite finding his humanity show, Dexter. Go Lucifer!
