Doux News: Comic-Con 2019

I have a new television obsession. It's at the end of this Comic-Con edition of Doux News, if you're interested in finding out what it is.

Marvel News

Our own Mark Greig posts a great deal of entertainment news, links and trailers on our Doux Reviews twitter feed. We also post links to every one of our reviews. If you're not following us yet, could you? Pretty please? With non-caloric sugar on top?

The reason I'm bringing that up is that Mark already posted lots and lots of news from the Marvel panel, RIGHT HERE. So my work is done.

And Agents of SHIELD will be ending next year with season seven. They're even filming the finale right now, which will air next summer.

General TV-related News

"Crisis on Infinite Earths," the upcoming massive Berlanti-verse crossover, will feature Brandon Routh and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman. Personally, I love both of them and I can't wait; I thought Routh was terrific in Superman Returns, and that Tyler Hoechlin was the best thing about last fall's "Elseworlds" three-parter. So much so that I've been hoping they'd give us a Hoechlin-as-Supes series.

Westworld season three will be less confusing. Although we'll have to wait until 2020 to be less confused.

Doom Patrol got a second season. No premiere date yet. I hear season one is  pretty good and we might be posting some coverage soon.

The Man in the High Castle final season will air November 15 on Amazon Prime. We've been doing season reviews for this show.

The Expanse season four also got an Amazon Prime premiere date: December 13. We're hoping to cover it somehow. Stay tuned.

Star Trek, and my new television obsession

Trek fans everywhere have been very excited about the advent of Star Trek: Picard, coming in early 2020, and featuring the return of my favorite captain played by my favorite Trek actor ever, Patrick Stewart. It was just announced at Comic-Con that Stewart will be joined by several fellow Trek alums: Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, voila:

While I'm as wildly enthused as the next Trek geek about Picard, the series I want now, more than any series in years, is Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn as Christopher Pike, Spock and Number One. They were heavily featured in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. And they're wonderful.

If you're not a Trek fan, the original 1965 Star Trek pilot, "The Cage," featured these three characters. The pilot wasn't picked up, but the suits liked it enough that they asked for a second, Jeffrey Hunter said no to doing Christopher Pike a second time, so the second pilot starred another captain named James T. Kirk.

I've been waiting and hoping for an announcement that a Star Trek series starring Pike would be coming. Not yet. But Disco executive producer Alex Kurtzman did announce that these three characters would star in three Short Treks films that will air before Disco's third season. So maybe they're considering a series. Please be considering a series!

Our Star Trek: Discovery reviewer CoramDeo is also reviewing the Short Trek films, by the way.

I guess I should mention Star Trek: Lower Decks, also premiering in 2020. Although I'm really, really super unenthused about animated Star Trek. It didn't work so well the first time.

Too much news! Please feel free to post comments about anything and everything!

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. I love Doom Patrol so much!

OK, so I promised myself a solid month at least of vacation before jumping back into reviewing things. That was a week and a half ago, and in that time I've pulled up Doom Patrol three separate times to start taking notes on it for episode reviews.

    The takeaway -

1: Doom Patrol season 1 is amazing and you should please, please watch it.

2: I don't know how to vacation correctly.

SO happy to hear about season 2! Now can they please formally announce Cloak and Dagger season 3?

Thanks so much, Billie, for the Comic-Con coverge!

  2. Comic Con is so hectic it is next to impossible to keep track of every thing, especially if you happen to be there.

I'm looking forward to most of the things you've mentioned, Billie. So happy we're getting another season of The Expanse, but don't know if I can wait until December (might have to start reading the books in the meantime). Picard looks great, if a little too reminiscent of Logan. The Short Treks look fun, but are no substitute for an actual Pike series. Also not too fussed about the animated show.

Here are some of the other things that caught my attention:

DuckTales - I still amazed how good this show has turned out to be and love that they are using it to revive all of Disney's 90s toons. We've already had Darkwing Duck, but next seasons we're getting characters from Goof Troop, Rescue Rangers and TaleSipn.

His Dark Materials- The new trailer gave us our best look yet at all the series' magical creatures (the various daemons and armour polar bears) who all look amazing, certainly better than whatever the hell those things in the Cats trailer were supposed to be.

The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance - The more I see of this series the more amazing it looks.

Young Justice - We're getting a season four. Great. Now all I need to do is find some way to legally watch season 3 in my stupid ass European Union leaving country.

Watchmen - The new trailer looks interesting, but I'm still baffled as to what this show is about. I'm guessing it is some kind of sequel series to the original story.

The Witcher - Never played the games, but I have been reading the books this summer and like what I've seen of Netflix's adaptation so far. I don't even mind Henry Cavil's wig.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - Catra has a leather jacket!!!! That is all.

  3. I am so overwhelmed... I started writing down what I may be interested in, and stopped at the 10th show...and that is new shows...not even just finishing up shows I've already started (hello Stranger Things, Westworld, Good Omens, The 100, Agents of Shield...ok, just about everything on this site...). At least a lot of the new Marvel stuff is on Disney's new streaming service - which I am not sure yet I need ANOTHER one - so maybe I can cross that stuff out. Honestly, I'm still pissed they all got cancelled from Netflix, because I LOVE those characters and who plays them (Kristin R especially, as many of you have mentioned). Maybe I just need a break and should go try to weed thru my TBR pile.

  4. Billie, I was fortunate to see Anson Mount and Ethan Peck at the Shore Leave convention last weekend, as you know, and am also really hoping for a series with them. They couldn't confirm anything, of course, and I got the feeling that they didn't even know if it would happen themselves. They were great guests who were very appreciative of the fans, seemed like genuinely nice guys, and looked to have a really great relationship with each other. I hope TPTB are smart enough to listen to the fans on this one.

  5. Thanks, Mikey -- I'll have to try Doom Patrol.

Thanks for all of the news, Mark. These days, there is so much coming that I'm inclined to just wait and see if any of them hit before I even try them. Is that bad of me?

    Sooze, I'm so with you.

Katerina, I'm starting to think they're teasing us with this Pike series thing. Why would they do THREE Short Treks if something wasn't coming down the, um, Pike?

    1. They're either teasing us, or, maybe, since Spock was such an iconic character, they wanted to get fan reaction to this new incarnation, first?? Probably not, though, since he and Pike featured so heavily in Discovery season 2. Who knows. I saw a clip last night of the one with Spock and Number One stuck in a turbo lift, and can't wait to see the whole thing!
