The Good Place: Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy

“Or is that exactly what you want us to do?”

Told you so.

I think it’s strange that Glenn chose to defect. We’d never seen anything in any of the demons before that would lead me to believe they would choose to help the humans, risking a fate worse than death from Shawn. To be honest, a lot of this episode felt awfully convenient and maybe a little contrived. It hurts me to criticize my favorite currently running show but there it is. I suppose we had to spur the gang on to realize that one of them was an imposter but I feel like there could have been another way to do that.

This episode didn’t really work for me. Maybe it was because I knew Janet was fake and the whole mislead with Michael was, well, a mislead, but the episode just felt like a bit of a waste of time. It did have its high points, however.

CHIDI AND ELEANOR!!! I love them so much. They shared a plate of nachos and some margaritas and chatted and you could totally see why she fell for Chidi in the first place. Of course, he thinks Simone is his soulmate and Eleanor is some godlike figure. He better get his memories back by the end of the series, I swear.

Also worth the ride: Jason. He’s really been shining lately. Manny Jacinto is an attractive man but never has he been hotter than when he was insisting he was going to punch Shawn and get Janet back. I hope there IS a Janet to get back. I thought marbleizing was permanent. And even if the Bad Place could reconstitute Janet, why do so? Wouldn’t it be safer to launch her into the sun or something? We left our half our heroes off to get Janet while the other half try to salvage the experiment.

There was minimal interaction with our humans this week. We watched them play a botched game of magical Pictionary and learned that Brent has stopped saying “Daddy like” but that was really about it. Can’t say I miss them. I like Simone but John and especially Brent are very annoying. And I don’t know that they’re really improving? We only have nine episodes left before the fate of humanity is decided so they better start getting better quick.

Ethical Bits & Pieces

The stages of demon growth are: larva, slug monster, spooky little girl, teenage boy, giant ball of tongues, and social media CEO.

The Good Quotes

Jason: “If you’re a devil, how come you’re not wearing Prada?”

Jason: “Shawn’s a bully. And sometimes the only thing a bully understands is a punch in the mouth. I’m gonna go down there, I’m gonna punch him in the mouth, and I’m gonna get Janet back!”

Michael: “Okay. Let’s go get our girl.”
Jason: “Not a girl.”

  1. I thought Glenn didn't really defect. His story turned out to be bullshit, right? It was supposed to get rid of Michael, or at least sow distrust, but in the end it didn't work. But maybe I misunderstood; the episode was a bit confusing.

  2. That was my initial thought too, Michal, but Bad Janet called Glenn a traitor so either she wasn't in on that part of the plan or he actually betrayed Shawn and company.

  3. Huh, you're right, the "traitor" remark doesn't make much sense if Glenn was lying. On the other hand the whole Glenn's story doesn't make much sense if he really wanted to help. Was that the last attempt of Bad Janet to make them suspicious of Michael? Or was it just bad writing?

  4. I'm going to have to watch it again before I watch this week's episode. I took Glenn's story at face value (bad idea with demons lol) and didn't really see the discrepancies, but I do now in hindsight!
I'll be very disappointed if it's bad writing. I've dismissed things a number of times on this show too easily as bad writing or lack of continuity and have been proven wrong every single time.

  5. I think Glenn did defect; to me he seemed sincere. Shawn had been very dismissive of him before and his face showed some concern at the possibility that maybe not all humans were bad. If one demon, such as Michael, could have doubts about the system, then why not another? He just did not have all the facts,

And it turns out that Jason's advice - "We trust both of them" - turned out to be the best advice.
