What is everyone watching this week? Do you watch anything special on Halloween? I used to watch the Buffy Halloween episodes around this time of year, since I'm not a horror movie fan.
Right now, I'm finishing a rewatch of Person of Interest. Such a good show. I caught the first couple episodes of Tracker (season two), the second of which has Jensen Ackles as a guest star and a somewhat supernatural/sci-fi plot.
How about you guys?
Morella: Been watching more than usual the last couple of weeks considering what time of year this is, and to get that last review out! The list is longer than usual for me, as I've watched: two Roger Corman Poe movies with Vincent Price, i.e, The Tomb of Ligeia and The Pit and the Pendulum, The Skull, The Man Who Could Cheat Death, Black Sunday (The Mask of Satan, 1960s Italian horror, not the 1977 thriller movie), Frankenstein, and Bride of Frankenstein.
Victoria Grossack: I'm watching the second season of Resident Alien, available on Netflix in my current market. It's just nice to watch something weird.
Mark Greig: Hocus Pocus used to be a Halloween tradition, but haven't watched it for the last couple of years. Thinking of having a classic haunted house double this year: Jack Clayton's The Innocents followed by Robert Wise's The Haunting.
Mothra: I am still working my way very slowly through a Buffy rewatch and thoroughly enjoying the DVD commentaries. (Rewatching "Amends" even made me consider watching even more slowly so that the episodes would be in season, but I'm way too impatient for that.) I don't normally make a point of watching horror movies this time of year, but I am pretty excited to be going to see the original 1978 Halloween for the first time at my local theater.
An Honest Fangirl: I'm very happy that Tracker is back, and that we got Jensen back so soon as well! He really does just play Dean Winchester in that show. I love it.
I'm still watching Doctor Odyssey and it's still.... fine? It's not good, and yet it strangely compels me. I'm also still watching A Murder in a Small Town, and I'm very invested in it. Unfortunately, it's on a three week break, but last episode was excellent.
(Shameless plug time) Gonna shout out The Penguin as well, which I've been reviewing. It's excellent. It's fantastic. You should go see it. And go see From Dusk till Dawn too!
Josie Kafka: Wait, what on earth is this Tracker show that everyone knows about other than me? Should I watch it? Will I like it?
I am excited to watch From Dusk till Dawn soon!
An Honest Fangirl: Josie, I think that you would! Tracker started last year on CBS, and follows Colter Shaw (played by Justin Hartley) who is a "rewardist" (dumb name, I know). He goes around the country finding missing people and collecting the reward money for them. This ranges from "my brother got lost in the woods" to "a Las Vegas hitman is hunting the guy who chartered a family friend's plane because he robbed a casino." It's highly episodic. It's fun. Colter takes off his shirt a lot. There are good side characters. And Jensen Ackles plays his big brother in a couple of episodes.
I actually wrote a review for an episode of it last year ("Off the Books"). I really enjoy it. It's one of the very few scripted shows that I actually watch anymore. The plots are sometimes a little dumb, but I don't ask much from them.
And by last year, I mean a few months ago because my brain has decided that anything from "last season" was a year ago.
Billie Doux: What I like most about Tracker is Justin Hartley. His Green Arrow made the later seasons of Smallville better. And I don't think there have been a lot of shows with this sort of plot. I also like that he lives in an Airstream trailer that he takes with him from case to case. And then, of course, there's Jensen.
Panda: I started and finished Sweetpea, the new Sky/Starz show with Ella Purnell. It’s a bit muddled in parts, but a still quite fun. Not sure it’ll survive more than one season, though.
For some reason I love to watch Halloween episodes of Sabrina the Teenage Witch around this time of year. Makes me remember the fun of Halloween when I was a kid. Mr Pool can be so annoying.
ChrisB: I recently finished rewatches of Downton Abbey and The Crown. Both held up better than I would have guessed. And, because it was there on my Prime list, I rewatched The Queen just to do a side by side comparison. Helen Mirren is so good in the role.
Because Billie’s review intrigued me, I spent a day with the Menendez brothers. Whew. Super damaged people that have stayed with me. I find myself thinking about them and their situation a lot since I watched the show.
Morella: One thing I found amusing is that the main villain in The Man Who Could Cheat Death was played by Anton Diffring, who also played De Flores in the Seventh Doctor story, "Silver Nemesis."
Mikey Heinrich: I love a deep cut Doctor Who connection.
I've been trying to spend as much time as I can job hunting, but I did devour the entirety of Heartstopper season three over a weekend and loved it. Also I want it in the minutes that Kit Connor is in reality twenty years old and not seventeen. I feel it's important to keep that in mind for... reasons.
Also I've been loving Agatha All Along. Yes, It's all Joe Locke all the time, apparently.
Oh, and I also felt compelled by Billie's review to check out the Menendez Brothers series. I have one episode left and would very much like it if Joe Locke does NOT show up in it. Let's just keep him away from this one. Very upsetting. Although the fact that Cooper Koch (Eric) seems to be going out of his way to tell interviewers that he isn't wearing a prosthetic in that shower scene is very, very funny to me.
Not that I blame him. If I were so blessed, I would literally work it into every conversation.
Joseph Santini: I finally figured out my Disney account and got caught up with Agatha All Along. It didn’t start out strong but grew on me and I absolutely love Patti LuPone! I’m also keeping up with The Legend of Vox Machina which for me is a strong recommend. I love the D&D connections and the background of how the show came to be. I’m also keeping The Instant Gardener going in the background because nothing calms me like happy people with British accents working on a garden.
Samantha M. Quinn: I guess it is a spooky time. I finally sat down and watched Terrifier 1 & 2 and... um... they are good slasher films that feel like they should've been made in the eighties. The main monster feels like he belongs in the same league as Freddy, Jason, Michael and Pinhead and the actual gore is so over the top that it is almost funny. The second movie features some supernatural weirdness and a great Final girl. That being said, unless you are a hardcore horror fan, I do not recommend you watch because these movies are very disturbing.
Whereas Agatha All Along is the best Marvel TV project since Loki, the acting is great, the scripting is tight and intentional and they just aired an absolutely wonderful episode that gave me the feels. I strongly recommend the show, especially for anyone that liked or loved WandaVision (this is a direct sequel to that and Multiverse of Madness).
I don't really have a Halloween watch tradition, but October is oddly enough when Supergirl fanfiction writers celebrate their favorite ship, which is dubbed Supercorptober (Supercorp being the ship name for Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor).
I just finished my Magicians rewatch and I had forgotten how well it ended, perhaps a bit bittersweet, but fitting.
And because vampires are kind of coming back, the first season of the excellent adaptation for Interview with the Vampire has been dropped on Netflix and if you haven't watched it, please give it a shot. I reviewed the first two seasons, and I'm anxiously awaiting season three.
An Honest Fangirl: Okay, I did not expect to see a Terrifier mention here! I definitely agree with what you said. Art the Clown is just instantly iconic, and the gore is equally so. Definitely movies that you need to watch on an empty stomach. I haven’t seen the third one yet, but I’ve heard it’s a fitting entry for the series.
Billie Doux: That's a wrap. What are you watching these days, readers? And FYI, we are planning to do a season review of Agatha All Along.
I should probably clarify my Terrifier comment, I actually liked the second film. I didn't really care for the first one, but the ending and Art were both really well done.
ReplyDeleteI've seen one episode of Tracker, because I had to see Jensen and I thought he and Hartley had good chemistry. Also wasn't Hartley shirtless through most of Smallville?
I honestly don't remember if Hartley took off his shirt a lot on Smallville, but I do remember he did an episode in drag. Bless his heart.
ReplyDeleteI also just watched 'Taste the Blood of Dracula' with not only Christopher Lee as the count, but it also has 2 Doctor Who actors and a James Bond one! Geoffrey Keen plays the nasty William Hargood and played the defense minister in some James Bond films, John Carson was Johnathon Secker, a slightly less nasty character, played Ambril in the 5th Doctor story 'Snakedance', and Martin Jarvis who played Jeremy Secker, Johnathon's son, played Dr. Butler in the 3rd Doctor story 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs' and the governor of Varos in the 6th Doctor story 'Vengeance on Varos'.
ReplyDeleteHIs contribution to Bad Moms Christmas should not go unpraised. He plays a firefighter/ stripper who goes to Kathryn Hahn to get his undercarriage waxed.
ReplyDeleteYes. That is a sentence you just read. And I feel like I've really tied all the conversational threads together nicely here.
Just finished watching the second series of The Devil's Hour, which is available on Amazon Prime, and is excellent. Lucy (Jessica Raine) awakens every morning at 03.33 precisely. She has a son, Isaac (phenomenally well-played by Benjamin Chivers), who never smiles. Her mother (Barbara Marten) may or may not have blown her own brains out with a shotgun. Gideon (Peter Capaldi) is explaining to DI Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel) how he can't really explain what's happening or why certain people are dead now in a way he'll be believed.
ReplyDeleteAnd it takes off from there. Watch it. Someone should review it!
Started up the latest series of Only Murders in the Building, now that it will finish up before we get to the final episode. No point in starting if we're going to have to wait for a week at some point. Love these guys.
Don't really have a Hallowe'en traditional show. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is right up there, of course. As is Halloween (there are no other films with the word 'Halloween' in the title, of course). Maybe we'll do Dark City or The Fog. Or just surf through the available offerings until we find something that appeals.
Watched the 1963 movie 'The Haunting' last night again, been a few years since I bought the Blu-ray and watched it. It's a great movie even if Elenore can be extremely annoying at times.
ReplyDeleteIn the spirit of the season I've started watching interview with the vampire and I'm loving it
ReplyDeleteScars of Dracula last night! Christopher Lee is great as always, Michael Ripper is in yet another Hammer movie, and fun times, Patrick Troughton is his servant Klove! He's good in quite a few horror movies but I will always prefer him as the 2nd Doctor.
