Dexter Resurrection: Backseat Driver

"Only in New York."

(I know I'm late with this week's review! This is for last week's. Forgive me!)

And Dexter is back and killing.

I was actually happy to see the "Dark Passenger" go down before we could lose any more UrCar drivers, and possibly Dexter's new friend Blessing himself. Dexter's enjoyment at taking out another bad guy was obvious, too. And Dexter has also realized where he went wrong with Harrison, trying to make his son into something he's not.

But did Dexter make a mistake earlier in leaving a bit of blood in Red's ceiling? This is exactly the same mistake Harrison made at the hotel. Can we assume that the intrepid Claudette Wallace will eventually find that blood? Dexter talked with Harry about growing old and how grueling a kill can be; he made mistakes in Iron Lake, too. I don't know what the suits have in mind for Dexter: Resurrection, but if this is finally Dexter's totally and completely final swan song, it would make sense that Claudette could be the end of him.

And we now know why Red a.k.a. Ronald Schmidt is a middle-aged white guy like Dexter. An invitation to a dinner party for serial killers? Here's a bunch of money and there's more if you're willing to sell your trophies? (Thumbprint required for entry? Laugh out loud as Dexter quickly pulls Ronald's arm out of the incinerator.)

Yes, a dinner party for serial killers is ridiculous and could never happen in the real world. But I find the whole idea delightful. Especially with Dexter going in "undercover."

On the home and job front, I'm not surprised that Dexter isn't a good UrCar driver. He's not naturally accommodating. Blessing was once again a blessing, teaching him the tricks to getting five stars. Blessing's family is also giving Dexter great food, always a positive for Dexter, acupuncture treatment that actually seemed to help with his bullet wound, and a web site where Dexter can run backgrounds on his victims. Maybe a bit too convenient.

Dexter doesn't want to screw up Harrison's life and continued to keep his distance, which was actually pretty considerate. But Harrison is having his own post-kill problems.

Claudette guessed the truth, that Harrison heroically saved a woman from rape. I loved her with the Bee Gees walking around figuring out how he did it, with the room service cart, the freight elevator, the closed hotel kitchen, the wrapped trash bags and the open door to the street. Harrison managed to withstand Claudette's clever interrogation mostly by telling (nearly all of) the truth and not losing his nerve, that he didn't leave the hotel because he's homeless. Harrison had to give up Elsa in the process. Here's hoping she doesn't lose her job.

Finally, I absolutely loved the OG Dexter reunion where Angel celebrated his retirement with Quinn and Masuka. What's sad is that Angel is clearly drinking too much, and he is obsessed with that "one last thing" he needs to do. We all know what that is. And it increased my foreboding that this final quest is going to be the death of Angel Batista. No, please. If this is the end of Dexter, couldn't Angel be the one to bring him down?

Love this photo.

Bits and Quotes:

— There is snow on the ground. According to IMDb, they're filming in New York.

— I thought Ronald/Red was targeting immigrants? Dexter doesn't fit the profile.

— Charley said that VIP number five is vegan. A vegan serial killer?

— I was once a hotel employee and it's true that we were not allowed to use the guest elevators without a guest.

— Elsa told Harrison that her son Dante was a result of a one night stand.

— We saw Ryan give Harrison his watch for repair. Why no mention of it? It's unlike this show to drop a thread.

— While giving him acupuncture, Joy told Dexter that there was an old coal chute in his new apartment where she used to hide her pot. I'm sure we'll see it at some point.

— Dexter once again broke the fourth wall when the drug guy on the phone said, "Glad to have you back." "Glad to be back."

Dexter: "Kill you soon, Red."

Harry: "A girlfriend isn't a good reason to not see your son."
Dexter: "You want me to blow up his night with an appearance from Zombie Dad?"

Dexter: "The kill tables have turned, and I hate it."

Fun to watch, and I enjoyed it. I'm very much looking forward to the dinner party. Three out of four acupuncture needles?
