"Keeping my killing life separate from my personal life is difficult when my personal life keeps calling, asking for help."
In original Dexter, there was usually a late season episode where Dexter's killing life and personal life collided. This was it.
Dexter tried and failed to kill Al, the last member of Prater's kill club. On his way home to Wisconsin to knock up his ovulating wifey (shudder), Al had tickets to Hamilton, because of course he did. And Al left early because he didn't like Hamilton. Only a serial killer wouldn't like Hamilton.
It was rude of Al to stand Dexter up, although it was also smart of him to keep his kill life completely separate from his home life, which Dexter has again failed to do.
Angel tried and failed to catch Dexter with his little airpod. The family-owned wig salon had Dexter logic but no meaning for Angel – but he did almost walk in on a Dexter kill. If it had been Al on the table instead of Vinny the landlord, things could have been very interesting.
And Angel made an utter fool of himself with Claudette and Oliva. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Yes, there was this big mofo covered in plastic who knocked me down as he was running away. No blood, no ID, no warrant for Angel's airpod, which Dexter promptly discovered in the car and superstamped out of existence. And we got another lovely cameo from Desmond Harrington as Lt. Quinn, sweltering at a Miami crime scene, explaining that Angel is retired and is a wonderful guy, but... yeah, Dexter's luck is holding and it doesn't look good for Angel.
In the meantime, Dexter has been trying to be a good dad and actually succeeded with scaring Elsa's landlord to death, although I'm betting that might ricochet in the future. Dexter did spend two hours with his naked face hanging out, sitting in Vinny's office with that nice receptionist. But the bonding has been working and Harrison was even asking if he could stay at Dexter's apartment.
That is, when he isn't out partying with the beautiful Gigi, who has now confided that the nerve damage in her hand is permanent and she won't become a police detective, which is her dream. This is such an oddly specific plot thing; I have no idea where they're going with it. Gigi's constant pranking is annoying, but she's an interesting young woman and I don't want her to end up a victim in all of this.
That leads us to the shock finale, where Charley's "bad feeling" about Red led Prater to confront Dexter and Harrison in the restaurant. Harry the ghost had been full of caution about Dexter's "new friends," and boom. That's quite a cliffhanger.
Bits:
— Dexter inadvertently spilled the child soldier beans. Are we meant to see Blessing's issues with Joy as comparable to Dexter's with Harrison? I am now wondering if sweet, gentle Blessing is going to be a danger to Dexter or Harrison?
— In an interesting little parallel, the Gala prep showed Prater as gentle and sweet, praising his minions for their work while carefully pointing out the lack of a wheelchair ramp to the stage. And then Prater's voice dropped an octave as he was mean to Charley again. I'm still confused about what's going on there.
— Another scene with Harrison and Elsa's son Dante. Like Dexter, Harrison really likes kids and is good with them.
— When stocking-faced Dexter was dumping Vinny in his trunk, was that the music from The Wire? Only in New York. Laugh out loud.
— Claudette is researching the Bay Harbor Butcher. Note the article on Captain Aaron Spencer in February 1991 from Dexter: Original Sin. We've been getting a little piece of Original Sin in pretty much every episode.
— Speaking of which... Dexter: Original Sin had initially been renewed for a second season. Paramount just un-renewed it. If I had to choose between Original Sin and Resurrection, it would definitely be Resurrection. But why cancel it? I can't imagine it's the ratings.
Quotes:
Dexter: "I'm not going to ruin my shot."
Dexter: "Rapunzel, Rapunzel... where the fuck are you?"
Harry: "Look how upset you are."
Dexter: "I was trying to help him. His relationship with his daughter."
Harry: "Helping heal relationships. New lane for you, Dex. Usually you're in the business of ending them."
Dexter: "This is why I don't do friends."
Harry: "Honestly, you've been irritable ever since Al got away. Is this your version of 'hangry'?"
Dexter: "Go away, Dad."
Another good episode with a blowout of a cliffhanger. Three out of four rooms where it didn't happen this time,
Billie
