Supernatural: Drag Me Away (From You)

Billie: "Working a case? Now?"

Yeah. What she said. Why are we seeing filler like this when the series is ending in only four more episodes?

Kid Winchesters: The Younger Versions of Dean and Sam

Jared Padalecki, Colin Ford,
Jensen Ackles, Ridge Canipe
(Updated to include season fifteen!)

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki were practically baby actors in their twenties when Supernatural began back in 2005. As good as the show almost immediately became, no one could have predicted it would last as long as it did. Or that the kid actors who played the Winchesters as kids would grow up and be replaced by other kid actors.

Supernatural: Who We Are

"I hate you."

That was the best episode of Supernatural I've seen in a long time. You know why, don't you? Because they once again explored the primary Winchester trauma.

Supernatural: The Devil in the Details

"Instead of choosing the world, you choose each other. No matter how many innocent people die."

The Christmas-related preview that followed the mid-season finale, "O Brother Where Art Thou," was so bizarre that I couldn't imagine how they could possibly make an episode out of it. What clever misdirection.

Supernatural: Just My Imagination

"You're a good weird."

There is something delightful about a real "imaginary friend" going to the Winchesters for supernatural help.

Supernatural: About a Boy

"Everybody wants a second chance, right?"

I enjoyed this one tremendously. The dialogue had me laughing like a loon and some of the action creeped me out. And like all good Supernatural episodes, they managed to get the pathos in there.

Supernatural: Bad Boys

Dean: "I want to be a rock star. But I also really like cars."

So I was thinking, well, this is a nice little flashback, but what does it have to do with the ongoing story? And then we got to the end, and I started to cry.

Supernatural: The Girl Next Door

Sam: "Nothing in our lives is simple."

This episode was like a classic novel about the nature of tragedy, but a lot shorter and without the dense prose.

Supernatural: Swan Song

Sam: "I let him out. I gotta put him back in."

I'm glad they didn't go for a big CGI fight scene extravaganza. It was like they were saying simply that this is where the story began, this is how it ends, and this is what it means.

Supernatural: Dark Side of the Moon

Dean: "Just another deadbeat dad with a bunch of excuses, right? I'm used to that."

What terrific storytelling.

Supernatural: When the Levee Breaks

Dean: "I guess I found my line. I won't let my brother turn into a monster."

Incredibly painful. Possibly the most upsetting episode of Supernatural I've ever seen, and that's saying a lot. When Dean and Sam were tearing into each other in that hotel room, it was almost too much. Watching Sam turn on Bobby was just as wrenching.

Supernatural: After School Special

Mr. Wyatt: "The only thing that really matters is that you're happy. Are you happy, Sam?"

Ah, yes. High school as hell. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, how I miss you.

Supernatural: A Very Supernatural Christmas

Sam: "So I guess we're dealing with Mister and Missus God. Nice to know."

Evergreen stakes through the heart. It was so twisted. Scary, intense, clever and funny. And it even managed to be sad and touching. How do they do it?

Supernatural: Something Wicked

Dean: "Don't worry. I'm sure there's something in Fitchburg worth killing."

I didn't like this one. Maybe it was too overly dramatic and simplistic. Maybe it was just too much like a truly awful Buffy episode called "Killed by Death." If you're going to rip off Buffy, people, why not rip off a good one?

Supernatural: Pilot

Dean: "I can't do this alone."
Sam: "Yes, you can."
Dean: "Yeah. Well, I don't want to."

It took me some time to get into this show, but something just kept me watching. I think it was Dean. Jensen Ackles is as cute as a retriever puppy, and Dean, prickly on the outside but with a soft, chewy emotional center, is my favorite character. It took me longer to warm up to Sam, but I'm plenty warm now.
