Angel Season One: Spoilers and Foreshadowing

The Angel Re-Watch begins! Just like with Buffy, we're keeping spoilers out of the review comments, but they're very welcome right here. Post anything you like about the first season of Angel and how it relates to the rest of Angel as well as to the parent show, Buffy.

We're assuming everyone who reads or posts comments in this thread HAS SEEN IT ALL, including all of Buffy and Angel. If you haven't seen both series in their entirety yet, leave now -- or you're certainly going to be spoiled! You can always come back and post a comment later. It'll be here.

There are a number of Buffy/Angel crossover episodes. Here is my crossover guide.

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. Was Kate supposed to be a long term love interest of Angel's? If so, why did they ditch that plan? Their utter and complete lack of chemistry or Elisabeth Röhm's dubious acting talents? Yes, I know that was unnecessarily bitchy.

  2. Yes, she was definitely supposed to be a long-term love interest. They tried several times to introduce one for him. I'm pretty sure Amy Acker was, too. At some point they gave up and decided on Cordelia. Big mistake.

The treatment of Cordelia as a character is one of the things I don't like about Angel. Even though her final episode was one of the best in the series.

  3. Fred was too? Um. That's just awkward. Totally agree about Cordelia. I love them together as they were in the first two seasons. They do play off each other well, but the whole romance thing sort of had an air of "He's there. She's there. Let's hook them up I guess." It wasn't that I had a problem with him finding love with someone besides Buffy, it was that they seemed to want to get him a girl out of convention irrelevant to the characters.

  4. Yes, Angel and Cordelia had great friend chemistry.
If they had kept Cordelia snarky and fun (S1 & 2 Cordy), I wouldn't have even minded them hooking up, but they turned Cordy into a bore and then into season 4 Cordelia (which is the worst thing ever). Hated what they did to Cordy in S4. But the send-off in S5 was awesome. Our Cordy was finally back. (sniff)

  5. What The Buffy Powers That Be ought to do is move Spike to L.A.

From the "In The Dark" review, maybe TBPTB read what you wrote and just waited for the right time. I also love the fact that this early in the run, Spike's sire is still so unclear. He refers to Angel as his sire several times throughout the beginning of both series. I think it's an emotional bond.

  6. 100% agree with Chris. Dru may have made Spike a vampire, but Angelus made him a monster.

  7. Chris, I'm guessing that Spike is your favorite character in both shows?

Spike is definitely my favorite Buffy character. Wesley became my favorite Angel character, though.

  8. Oh, yeah! He ranks as among my favorite TV characters, in fact fictional characters, ever. Can't wait for him to turn up during the re-watch.

  9. I've always wondered if Angel becoming human in this episode could have been his shanshu prophecy fulfilled.

  10. Annie, that's a thought. One of my biggest disappointments about the end of Angel was that it ignored the Shanshu prophecy. I wish that Whedon could have addressed it somehow.

  11. Whenever the Shanshu was being talked about on Angel I was kind of scratching my head thinking... he *did* become human already...

Its all very noble of him to give up his life but annoying. He can't keep Buffy alive forever so he really should have given her more respect, stood beside her, and had faith in her.

  12. The complete lack of feeling from both Angel and Cordelia when she kisses him in "Parting Gifts" made me smile. I do like the way their relationship developed over the years rather than suddenly happen.

  13. Re: "Expecting."

Mystical pregnancy plot poll! Which Angel mystical pregnancy plot is your favorite?

    Season One: Cordelia's one-night stand.

Season Two: the opening episode's joust for the baby.

    Season Three: Darla.

    Season Four: Cordelia, again.

Season Five: the episode in which David Boreanaz's wife plays an expecting mother whose baby is being funded by a demon cult.

  14. None of the above. :) I don't know why, but mystical baby plots irritate the heck out of me.

  15. Season 3 --- Darla. I think that one had the best payoff from a character perspective. If not for Connor, would we have gotten the fabulous Dark Wesley arc? I'm not a huge fan of grown-up Connor (especially since it resulted in the S4 mystical pregnancy --- the WORST!), but I think they found an absolutely wonderful way to rid themselves of Baby Connor while wringing tons and tons of character drama and development out of it.

  16. WOW they did use that a lot, didn't they? Yikes. I agree with Jess. Cordelia's pregnancy was ridiculous, but I really liked the Jasmine arc it led up to. The irony of saving the world by making everyone miserable again is always interesting.

  17. There were also the demons with the third eye in the back of their heads who implanted their offspring to gestate in Cordy's head.
