Buffy Season One: Spoilers and Foreshadowing

The Buffy Re-Watch is on! We're keeping spoilers out of the review comments, but they're very welcome right here. Post anything you want to say about Buffy season one and how it relates to the entire series -- we're assuming everyone who reads or posts comments here has seen it all.

(And if you haven't seen the entire series yet, leave now -- or you're certainly going to be spoiled!)

  1. In "Welcome to the Hellmouth," Cordelia says she would kill to live in LA. She later moves to LA in Angel. Joss Whedon has jokingly claimed this was intentional.

  2. Isn't it interesting that Giles gets the free calendar with the Time/Life books. Jenny is not that far away.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I always smile when I hear Cordelia saying: "We don't have a whole lot of town here" considering how "big" Sunnydale gets later

    ReplyDelete
  4. The Hellmouth info plays a huge part for the whole series. It was a good idea to make Sunnydale a Hellmouth, otherwise people would wonder why so many monsters are around. I wonder if anybody who saw the original pilot when it aired had any clue that David Boreanez would become such an important part...

  5. HOLY COW !!!!! I'm returning from imbd's infos about the show.

Michelle Trachtenberg, Eliza Dushku, Felicia Day, Armin Shimerman and Dann Strong will join up ! Cool, cool, cool.

Aw crap. Julie Benz will last only 6 episodes. Darn.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Celticmarc, Julie Benz moved over to the Buffy spinoff show, Angel, and did a lot more than six episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Bare with me ! I'm a NEWBIE !

    INdeed !

    "Julie Benz ... Darla (20 episodes, 2000-2004)"

HEY !!! Amy Acker will be there too ! Daniel Dae Kim and Sam Anderson ! Happy camper LMAO !

  8. I find it hilarious that you're so excited about all these actors you know from other places being on BtVS/Angel, celticmarc. I knew them all from BtVS/Angel before I ever saw them in anything else. :)

To me Julie Benz isn't the girl from Dexter, she's Darla and Daniel Dae Kim is (spoiler omitted), not a guy stuck on an island or a cop in Hawaii. DDK spends a lot of time on islands, doesn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  9. LOL sunbunny. Should we call it reverse psychology ? Or reverse something for sure. If not for Billie, no Buffy for me.

    ReplyDelete
  10. That's more power than I'm comfortable with, celticmarc. :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. No, no but I agree with celticmarc, because I can say the same: If not for Billie, no Dexter/True Blood/Fringe/PoI for me :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Did anyone wonder about Angel's comment when he said to Buffy, "I thought you would be taller" given what we learn later about his backstory and when he first saw her.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sunbunny, I always shout out the names of Buffy characters when I see them in anything else!

I remember being shocked that Angel was a vampire. I see the hints when re-watching it, but I was completely surprised and heart-broken for Buffy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. In "The Harvest," did anyone else notice how familiar it seemed when Jesse as a new vamp was standing against the pillar watching Cordelia dance? It reminded me of both Angel and Spike doing the same while watching Buffy in later eps.

    ReplyDelete
  15. In "The Harvest," Giles talkes about "the old ones." We don't see an "old one" until seven years after this on Angel!

Giles also mentions that all the demons have left this reality. At the end of season three, Anya says that none of the Scoobies have ever seen a [real] demon. Excellent continuity there.

Also, we have the obvious: Angel says "I'll be damned" (not for another season, bro) and he is standing in front of a sign that says "What your step."

By the way, Buffy tells Xander garlic will hurt/kill/stop/whatever vamps and we see some in her Trunk of Awesome Slayer Weapons, but we never, ever see anyone use garlic against vampires or even hear it mentioned again. It always bugged me. It's such a classic piece of vampire lore.

    ReplyDelete
  16. "we never, ever see anyone use garlic against vampires or even hear it mentioned again"

We do. "Passion" and "Wrecked" show garlic being used to keep vamps away. Cordelia even put some in her car, if I'm not mistaken.

  17. There's been a discussion about the Master on the commentaries for "The Harvest", and since you can't post spoilers there, I'll comment here. I think he is a good villain stuck on a weak season, pun intended. When he shows up on later episodes ("The Wish" and Angel's "Darla") he's much more interesting. Darla also becomes way more interesting too.

    ReplyDelete
  18. "The Witch." Lots of (possibly accidental) foreshadowing in this one and one GLARING continuity error.

    1. Buffy suggests Giles get a girlfriend.
    2. Willow refers to her and Xander as 'slayerettes,' the name that is eventually used for the potentials in season 7.
    3. Xander says "you don't have to drive it through my head with a railroad spike." That can't be a coincidence right?
    4. In order to distract Catherine, Willow offers to help her with her witchcraft.

Also, Giles. "First casting." Really? I watched really closely this time to see if he looked like he was lying to Buffy and co., but ASH plays it for reals.

    ReplyDelete
  19. When Giles is delighted by the prospect of meeting so many different types of monsters at the hellmouth in The Witch, I couldn't help but feel a little sad thinking about what a toll it will take on him and on all of the others given what they will face.

Of course, seeing Willow so easily obtain the eye of newt and then proceed to make a potion made be think about her future witchy dealings while seeing Amy trapped in her mother's body also foreshadowed another less comfortable body she will eventually be trapped in!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well Billie, you got me hooked. This re-watch is soooooo much FUN.

OH !!! Taken from Wikipedia's (1) article on Buffy :

"Nathan Fillion auditioned for the role of Angel back in early 1996." SOB !

    (1) Guess what ? I wanna know MORE !

    ReplyDelete
  21. OMG, celticmarc, I didn't know that! And I thought I knew nearly everything about Buffy. I knew that Julie Benz was a runner-up to play Buffy and they liked her so much that they gave her another part.

  25. SOB !

Seasons 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 also seem very interesting. To be continued...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Celticmarc, be careful about reading to much about the show so you don't spoil the surprises for yourself. When I first got into Buffy, I read everything I could about it, and unfortunately, I was spoiled on many of the surprise elements. Even though I really enjoyed the experience, I sometimes wish I could have had the surprise factor the first-run watchers had. I am having so much fun living vicariously through your newbie experience!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not to worry Suzanne !

During my Lost watching, I did cheat a bit indeed. But I was so enthralled by the show that I kept looking with new eyes (and I were in a way). Same here.

I just had a peek at the museum's wall; next step, I'll look at each and single painting !

(I'm also a big sucker for character development !)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Celticmarc, I get that and you won't be disappointed. As fun as the plot twists can be, Buffy is all about character. That is why so many of us can rewatch it so many times and still love it so much.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Suzanne,

I'm notoriously famous around here about how Lost affected me LOL (and still does today)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I forget which episode it is, but a while from now, Oz will look at the trophy that holds Catherine and say something along the lines of "the eyes always seem to be following me." That always makes me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  31. In Teacher's Pet, Xander says "It's funny how the earth never opens up and swallows you when you want it to." That seems to happen a lot in later seasons...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Teacher's Pet is also the beginning of Xander's epic bad luck with women. Do those eggs in the end scene ever show up again?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Miss Courtney, we never see those eggs again.

In "The Harvest," Buffy mentions that she might want to blow something up next apocalypse. And Giles's line always reminds me of the episode titled, you guessed it, "Doomed."

Jesse's speech about hearing the worms in the ground reminds me of Jonathan Woodward's similar speech in Season Seven's "Conversations with Dead People." Do you think vampires in this 'verse always "feel connected" to some larger evil, or is it a temporary, just-turned rush?

    ReplyDelete
  34. With everything they will go through together years from now, I love the way that Cordelia is attracted to Angel the first time she sees him. [Never Kiss a Boy]

    Salty goodness, indeed!

    ReplyDelete
  35. During this re-watch of the first few episode of season one I keep feeling very sad for Buffy. She is so optimistic in her will to have a normal life, a normal relationshih - she does loose it along the way. I don't know... when I re-watched this one [Never kil the boy] I kept seeing her face from "Touched" during that conversation with Spike....

    ReplyDelete
  36. In "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date," Giles says there is no manual. Later, it turns out there is a Slayer Manual, but he didn't think it would be much use with Buffy.

Chris - In the ep of Angel where they all revert to their teenage selves ("Spin the Bottle"), Cordelia says the exact same thing to Angel upon first seeing him. Then she says the government gave her bad hair. :)

Speaking of! 90s Flashback: Cordy's CRIMPED hair. Yikes. Also, Willow is drinking a Juice Squeeze. Do they even still make those?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Xander's attempted rape of Buffy in "The Pack" is so PG compared to what happens to her in season six. Obviously, it's totally different because Xander isn't in control of his actions and she's never been intimate with him, but even so, you can really see how the tone of the show of the show changed over the years.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sunbunny - I do agree that it is pg compared to season 6 seeing red incident but I'm undecided on the whole being in control of actions thing. Clearly Xander is totally out of control, but I think there's a case to be made that Spike is also not in control of his actions, there's no way he would have done it if he had his soul, not having a soul removes a barrier/conscience to evil deeds, the state of being a vampire is intrinsically out of control of the original person.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, we've completed show number six out of 13, and we're STILL in the first season, and I'm having a ball. And I'm sure I'm not the only one...Hum, that infamous 8th episode is approaching LOL

Billie, great idea this re-watch !

    ReplyDelete
  40. celticmarc, I am having the *best* time! One of our readers, Austin, suggested the rewatch. I'm so glad he did.

The dreaded eighth episode is preceded by the terrific seventh episode. That should help make it a little easier to take.

    ReplyDelete
  41. oops, my thanks to Austin !

Pushing the "delete" button way too often in my head. I am AMAZED by the quantity AND quality of the comments.

Have I EVER told you how much I love your site ????

    ReplyDelete
  42. Annie, I though about the same thing when it comes to Spike. It always bothers me a little that Xander seems hypocritical about that given his own incident.

I agree, thanks Austin for the idea of this rewatch and thanks Billie for taking the time to manage it. I am having a blast.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Suzanne, It is kind of hypocritical of Xander and he doesn't even own up to remembering it which is a little bit cowardly. Xander really can't see past the vampire in Angel or Spike even when they have a soul but the the way Xander was seemed to be very like being a vampire - predatory, cruel, same memories - although he did seem to have forgotten his Geometry?

I'd like to add my thanks to Austin for suggesting and Billie for running this, I'm new here and am really enjoying it. I know my comments are not the most insightful but I just like to add my own 2c and enjoy reading what everyone else has to say.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Annie - geometry does tend o slip out of your brain when you're not paying attention...

Xander. I mean, I love Xander because he's Xander, but he can be so petty and small and judgey with Buffy. He doesn't like her dating Angel or Spike but he thinks nothing of his dating a series of monsters and demons or of Willow's dating a werewolf, a witch, and a slayerette. Why? Well, because he wuvs Buffy of course. Still, it's hypocritical and singularly unattractive. Anya's what, six or seven times as old as Spike? Her body count must be astronomical.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sunbunny - hehe, I don't think geometry ever gained access to my brain for me to even forget it.

You may be right about Xander, I'd always thought he was over Buffy and was just blindly prejudiced against all vamps regardless of unique circumstances, but I guess he may have a soft spot for her romantically. I do love him though, despite his faults.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Re: 'Angel' --- I really loved getting "introduced" to all the backstory bits that we get to see play out later. It's so cool to hear about them for the first time.

On the less cool side, Buffy kneeling beside her mom and calling for the ambulance was kind of punch to the gut. Hearing her give out her address to the 911 operator tore at my heart a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  47. As many times as I have watched this episode, this was the first time I flashed to "The Body" when Buffy was dialing 911. It made me very sad.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Chris and Jess - I never thought about it before, but while I was watching last night, Buffy and Joyce totally reminded me of 'The Body' and it almost made me cry. Buffy was so protective and so worried about her mom.

Couple continuity bits: One of the Three manages to get his hand through the doorway. In later seasons, the invitation rule will present itself as a rather solid force field. Angel is able to lean on it on his show.

Darla says to Angel "You're living above ground, like one of them." Darla and Angel almost always lived above ground. In fact, she always had to have a view. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. (Angel)

SOB ! Darla is killed and she'll return in Angel ??!!?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes, celticmarc, that's correct. Joss Whedon and David Boreanaz really liked Julie Benz and wanted to bring her back. She also returns in flashback on Buffy, so this isn't the last we see her.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well, I'm not surprised. Who doesn't like J. Benz ?? Interesting character indeed. Cool actress too.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Here are some elements of foreshadowing that I noticed in this episode:

Not the first time the plate glass window gets broken.

    - The "Smoking Sucks" poster foreshadows Angel's smoking scene after he and Buffy have sex for the first time.

    - We get the first Joyce and Giles scene, and they seem to be getting along. ;)

    - This is the first time Buffy hesitates to kill Angel.

    - Buffy suspects that Angel is toying with her just like he ends up actually doing later when he becomes Angelus.

I didn't notice the foreshadowing related to The Body as some of you did, but now that you mentioned the parallel, it breaks my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  53. There's actually a lot of anti-smoking stuff in the series, particularly in the early seasons. Amber the cheerleader got in trouble once for smoking and spontaneously catches on fire in "Witch." Characters who go outside for cigarettes rarely come back without meeting a beasty. The only character who really smokes consequence free is Spike. And it's not like they're hurting him. Although it never was explained how Spike is able to smoke, but Angel couldn't give Buffy mouth to mouth...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh yes, the "flying fatality" going straight at the poster. OH ! I thought to myself : another subliminal message !!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hang in there Josie SOB ! I don't see any cages in the jungle ! Hang in there...

    ReplyDelete
  56. I posted a comment about vampire love over on the "Angel" review, but didn't want to get too specific: does anyone remember whether it's Spike or Angel who talks about love (in reference to either Darla or Drusilla) and how soulless love isn't real love? Or is that in an Angel episode in Season Two? Are we allowed to talk about Angel here?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Wow, this thread is getting so wonderfully long! It's Drusilla who talks about how vampires are definitely capable of love. Isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Dru says vampires can love "very well" in an episode of Buffy.

Angel tells Darla he never loved her because he couldn't without a soul in Angel season 2.

I think I'm going to go with Spike is capable of love and Angelus isn't. Angelus is pretty horrible to everyone and everything he meets. He's a monster. Compare to Spike, who even soulless and pre-chip can have a pleasant conversation with Joyce in Buffy's kitchen.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Celtic, you really should stay away from this thread. No, really.

Billie, it's Drusilla, on "Crush". She says vampires can love more wisely or something like that...

On the other hand, when Darla is pregnant, she says the feelings she has for the baby are coming from the baby, and she's afraid that once she gives birth she won't be able to love him anymore (man, writing about that scene just breaks my heart).

It’s a complex issue, for sure. I think vampires can form bonds of trust and family (re The Fanged Four), and they can love when it’s something that’s at least initially driven by lust. That’s why Darla and Angel could love each other, and the same for Drusilla and Spike. That’s why Darla probably would not be able to love Connor without a soul.

Spike is, of course, a major example when it comes to vampires being able to develop positive feelings towards humans. He was forced by the chip to restrain his killing habits, but he did form genuine bonds with the Scoobies. First, his love for Buffy, which clearly began as obsession and lust, but became something greater throughout season 5 to the point he would risk his own life (death?) to keep Dawn safe. On the beginning of season 6, he was taking care of Dawn even though he had nothing to gain from it, and he felt truly betrayed by the Scoobies for not being told about the resurrection plan. Yes, eventually his actions would go south again, but to me that shows that while vampires are able to love, they are not able to grow that feeling on a healthy way (Spike on season 6), unless the situation forces/helps them to (Spike on season 5).

  61. celticmarc, what Lamounier said. Really, beware the spoiler thread!

Of course it was "Crush". Thanks, Lamounier. I used to have a much better memory, especially where this show is concerned. The whole Angel versus Spike thing was a huge deal during the run of both shows. All aspects of Angel versus Spike. I can remember threads on the boards that ran to thousands of comments.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Without getting to deep into the discussion of what it is that makes us “us”, I’d like to point out that Angel was a not a decent person to begin with. Spike was initially a very sensitive and kind human being with a heart of a poet and I like to think that is the difference between them. Angelus was never capable to care about anyone or have any kind of positive feelings whereas Spike was.

    ReplyDelete
  63. On Vampires and love - I've always thought that they have the capability to love but that there's something missing from it that makes it less than what it would have been if they had a soul. How this effects the vampire is going to be based on their individual personalities.

Spike appears to have the greatest capacity for love and his (and Dru's) surviving humanity is mentioned by The Judge (can't remember episode) but Angelus is found to have no humanity.

I agree with Olga that this is probably because of the kind of people they were before being turned. Angel has grown since being cursed but that doesn't seem to transfer into any more humanity in Angelus.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Great discussion on the "vampire love" issue, guys! The "it's not the same as ensouled human love" take makes me feel better about the whole thing. And I agree that the nature of the pre-vampire person certainly seems to play a significant role in the "emotional life" of the vampire, once turned.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hmmm, then what about Darla? I don't remember much of her backstory, but I think she was a prostitute. I remember a scene where she's dying (vd) and the master takes away her pain by turning her. What was she really like? In flashbacks, it seems like she's trying to create a new family, Angel, Dru and finally Spike.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 67th comment. What will it be when we'll complete the seven seasons ??

I'm very glad that we'll see more of Miss Calendar. That is part of character development : more characters in the story ! More interactions, more conflicts, more love. Just like real Life.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Celtic, I'm planning to do a new one for each season. But yeah, I never realized it would get this long. It's wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I Robot You Jane: Buffy says "None of us are ever going to have a happy, normal relationship." And ain't that the truth? Scott is the only person I can think of one of the three of them ever dated for more than an episode who wasn't some sort of supernatural being or didn't eventually turn into some supernatural being. You could could Riley I suppose, but he's a genetically modified super solider, so...

    ReplyDelete
  69. I agree, SunB. Scott didn't even really make Buffy happy, he was a total jerk! I was thinking Willow and Tara had a pretty happy, normal relationship (aside from the witch thing). Their relationship is just magical, though.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It was for a while, but then Willow had her whole magic addiction thing and then of course, "Seeing Red." (weeps openly) They're my favorite Buffyverse couple. I love them. LOVE THEM.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yes, the ending if i Robot did make me sad thinking about all the heartbreak that is to come for these three. One aspect of watching 1st season that I always like is how bubbly and enthusiastic they all are (even Giles at times in the very beginning) at the prospect of the adventures they will face. This final scene provides the first hint for them of what their lives might become.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Dear God, but that final scene (I, Robot) is heartbreaking! It's almost as if they already suspect how much heartache is coming down the pike.

    Sad...

    ReplyDelete
  73. "The Puppet Show": Xander plays Oedipus in the talent show while Buffy plays Jocasta. In the play, Oedipus pokes out his eyes with pins from Jocasta's dress. So, there's that.

Buffy makes a reference to wearing a bunny suit. ("Fear, Itself")

Cordelia continues to be unable to sing on Angel.

    ReplyDelete
  74. OMG, sunbunny. I know Buffy like the back of my hand, but I never caught that. Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I was struck while watching "Nightmares" how often Joss and Co. will return to this theme over the course of the series. Dream episodes, nightmares, alternate realities will all play major roles moving forward.

Interestingly, this is one of the best of the bunch. I think it is because, by seeing what each of our characters fears, we are given true insight into their characters.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Seeing Buffy's fear of being buried alive gets to me a lot on rewatches of this show knowing about Season 6.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Agreed on buffy being buried alive and season six.

Also, although Buffy's fears over her relationship with her father are not realised yet, ultimately he becomes totally absent, not being there for her when he's needed the most.

    ReplyDelete
  78. "(a Wilhelm scream would be nice too)"

Will we eventually get one ?? That would be so good !

    ReplyDelete
  79. A couple of things made me smile this time through “Out of Sight.” The first is the fact that Cordelia does the reading and is respected by her teachers. Later, we will learn that she did very well on her SATs and gets very good grades.

Secondly, the fact that Joss throws in a bit of Shakespeare made me smile. Only a couple of weeks until the big event!

    ReplyDelete
  80. The way the gang lied to Buffy at the end made me uncomfortable since it reminded me of how they will distance themselves from her in Season 7.

    ReplyDelete
  81. There is a fair amount in "Prophesy Girl" that will be addressed later:

    1. The whole idea of Xander teasing Willow about wanting to date Buffy.

    2. Jenny pretends to not know that Buffy is the slayer, and makes a pretty convincing case of being surprised. Although, if you listen closely to the line, what she says is that she is surprised by how little Buffy is.

    3. The school, at least part of it, is destroyed in order to save the world.

    4. Is the Master the only vampire whose bones survive after he is dusted? Of course, the bones are necessary for the first episode of next season, but is it ever mentioned why his bones are so special?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Awwwww Chris.

    It's prophecy with a C.

Please don't hate him; I really pay attention.

    ReplyDelete
  83. 86th comment.

Billy, not only should you make another web page for the upcoming seasons, but maybe TWO; one for each half seasons. Look at all of this and it was only the first season, not your fave...wow.

    ReplyDelete
  84. ChrisB, I'd add one more to your list:

    5. Prophecies are complicated.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Catching up! On "Nightmares" now.

Willow says, in reference to spiders, "What do they need all those legs for anyway?" In "Once More with Feeling," Anya will sing, in reference to bunnies, "What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?"

Also "Once More with Feeling" related: Giles suggests that if everyone's dreams were coming true, it would be a musical comedy. In "Once More with Feeling," Willow suggests that "some kid is dreaming and we're all stuck inside his wacky Broadway nightmare."

    ReplyDelete
  86. In "Prophecy Girl," Xander says if Willow wants to date Buffy, she's playing it close to the chest. Throwaway comment or was Joss planning to have Willow come out all along? I think I read/heard once that Joss was always going to have either Willow or Xander be gay but had to decide which one of them it would be.

    ReplyDelete
  87. This comment has been removed by the author.

  88. One thing I found interesting while watching “Never Kill a Boy on The First Date”: Buffy was so reluctant on having to sacrifice her date to favor her slaying responsibilities. On season 5, however, when her slayer duties force a sister on her, she quickly accepts it. I can remember the end of “No Place Like Home”, when she is crying to the monk “I didn’t ask for this”, but then, on the beginning of “Family”, she tells Giles she wants to take care of Dawn.

That contrast is a beautiful remark on how she develops throughout the series. I mean, having your family literally altered in order to protect an ancient ball of energy is way more serious than having to let go off a date, but she quickly adjusts to the new scenario and does what she needs to do. Yes, I’m aware she had an emotional and physical connection with Dawn, but still, no easy thing to accept your memories were toyed with.

I think it’s her progressive disbelief that she can carry a normal life, along with all the shit the writers will throw at her, that finally makes her disbelieve in life itself: “if everything just gets stripped away, I don’t see the point.”

  89. sunbunny, I rewatched Prophecy Girl today, and that line about Willow totally stood out. I think it was just a throwaway comment, but in any case, what a cool little foreshadowing.
