Highlander: Haunted

Jennifer: "You killed my husband and you made love to me. You sick son of a bitch."

It was a dark and stormy night, and beautiful widow Jennifer Hill was being haunted by her dead husband, Alec. It felt like the beginning of a bad gothic mystery movie. Actually, that pretty much describes the episode. It wasn't really all that bad, but it wasn't all that good, either.

The interesting thing about this one was that Alec and Jennifer believed in mysticism and the transmigration of the soul, and that it included quickenings. What actually happens during a quickening? Did Richie actually possess Alec's soul? Richie was doing the music and the smoking and the having sex with Alec's wife, after all. And lest we forget, Sean Burns' quickening healed Duncan's mind. Something certainly happens.

Richie is still irritatingly immature, like a difficult teenager taking too long to learn the important lessons of life. But it really wasn't his fault this time (unlike Carter Wellan, just a few episodes ago). Duncan didn't stay mad at him for long. What could Richie have done, after all? Even Duncan might have taken Alec's head in the same situation. Maybe. Although I suspect Duncan would have found a way to defuse the situation, instead. Beheading is so, well, final.

Flashbacks:

— 1886 San Francisco: Duncan and Alec were building a house for Alec's bride, Genevieve, the woman Alec had been waiting for forever. Unfortunately, she had an old boyfriend named Gerard Kragen who was channeling Snidely Whiplash. "You're mine!"

— 1888 San Francisco: A much scruffier and deeply obsessed Alec hadn't gotten over Genevieve yet. He thought her spirit was still around, ready to transmigrate, and he had come to believe that quickenings involved transfer of the soul.

— In the 1888 flashback, Duncan and Alec talked about Amanda and the Double Eagle. 1888 was the year Amanda won the Double Eagle from Kit.

— 1995 San Francisco: A meaningless argument over a broken-down motorcycle, a duel, and so much for Alec Hill.

Bits and pieces:

— Richie was exercising, half naked. It looked like Stan Kirsch had been working out a lot. Woo hoo.

— The way Alec's face superimposed itself on Richie's was effective. There was a resemblance, too.

— Duncan was driving a red convertible and playing rock. What happened to the black T-bird and the opera?

— I loved that the evil Kragen had become a nasty movie director. He and Duncan completely trashed the scenery during the duel; it was fun, and probably my favorite scene in the episode. "Cut. Print. That's a wrap."

— Gerard Kragen was the 39th evil immortal with a K/C name.

Quotes:

Richie: "He went to San Francisco to whack the son of a bitch who killed her husband."
Joe: "Richie, you're the son of a bitch who killed her husband."

Richie: "I didn't know you believed in ghosts."
Duncan: "I believe in the kind you carry with you."
Me, too.

Two stars,

Billie

Billie Doux knows that there can be only one. And that's Methos.

  1. I knew I recognized Kragen actor, took me a few seconds to see it was Season 1 Sheriff Crowley.
I'd have to rewatch that Season 1 foght, but I think Duncan used the same back-of-the-legs cut on that actor back then, too.

  2. Outside of his master swordsmanship, not sure I'd want Duncan as my teacher. He's overly harsh at times and overreacts. It was clear his friend made the first move against Ritchie. His pretty hostile telling of Ritchie to get out of town felt like almost a threat. Terrible moment for Duncan the immortal and teacher, even over a friend.

  3. This was one of the worst Highlander episodes; it's so boring with unlikeable characters.

Why is the cash register at Joe's facing the customer side? It's been driving me crazy for a long time. Is this a mistake they never caught?

  4. I never noticed the cash register. Is it in this episode specifically, or have you noticed the same mistake in other eps?

  5. In a lot of episodes the cash register at Joe's Bar is has the till on the customer side. At the front of the cash register you can see the shelves of booze bottles. It does not really matter, it's just funny.
