I love Highlander, but it was so hit and miss. This one was pretty much a miss.
The president of whatever North African country it was? Overbearing, dangerous, homicidal jerk with delusions of grandeur and certainly no loss to anyone. But I found it hard to swallow that Duncan would attempt to assassinate anyone, even to keep his word to another immortal, even to take out someone evil. And as it turned out, he didn't. At first. In the end, Duncan took out the president because it was the right thing to do and because no one else would have gotten away with it, not because he wanted to keep his word to Kassim.
I had wondered if Rachel MacLeod was introduced to be a love interest for Duncan, and here, she finally was. She ended up more than that, though; she was Duncan's "mortal family," held hostage because she was the equivalent of Kassim's "mortal family," the al-Denebs. And now she's hightailed it back to the Highlands, totally freaked out by Duncan's lifestyle. Who could blame her?
Flashbacks:
— 1755 North Africa. Duncan befriended a luckless bootmaker, as he always tends to befriend the underdog and oppressed. To save the bootmaker's life, he promised to owe Kassim a big, big favor. Oops.
— 1460 Spain. Kassim took a vow to forever protect the house of al-Deneb. Those lifelong vows can be a pain in the ass. What was he thinking?
Bits and pieces:
— We were back in Paris and on the barge. Except the barge got burned. Let's hope it's fixable.
— It was a bit interesting that the current al-Deneb that Kassim was protecting didn't appear to be worth it.
— Come to think of it, it's no wonder Duncan has so many immortal friends and enemies showing up all the time. He's been everywhere. Much, much traveling.
— Pretty blond inspector again, this time played by Peta Wilson (La Femme Nikita). And interestingly enough, I think her lines were dubbed. Must have been because of her strong Australian accent.
— The actor who played Kassim wasn't much with his exotic curved sword, but he sure looked good with his shirt off.
— I'm tempted to count Kassim as an evil immortal with a K/C name, but he was just deluded and faithful to his mortal family, not evil. Which was probably why Duncan didn't take him out.

Rachel: "Time travel? Reincarnation? You're a fallen angel?"
Bootmaker: "Why did you come?"
Duncan: "Must be your camel jokes."

I enjoyed the bootmaker. Would have been cool if he'd have popped up in another flashback sometime while he was still hanging with Duncan.
ReplyDeleteRachel was a badass. She left Duncan not because she was scared, but she refused to "be used against" him. Between that and how accepting and non inquisitive she was, she's the girl Duncan needs.
