Veronica Mars: One Angry Veronica

Keith: "It's not always easy doing the right thing."
Veronica: "If that phrase isn't on the Mars family crest, it should be."

It was a blue, blue Christmas for Veronica. Things weren't going well with Duncan. And getting stuck with jury duty during the holidays would bring out the Grinch in anyone.

I found the whole jury duty plot to be mildly boring, although it was fun to see Veronica verbally tromping on the middle-aged jerk who was patronizing her. People just keep underestimating Veronica. Is it because she's small? Blonde? Young? Cute? Combination of these things? (I sort of liked the grandma with the accent finding the hole in the case, too.)

The theft of the Aaron/Lilly sex tapes was much more interesting, and of course that was mostly because of Logan. The scene where Logan sat there watching the tapes and crying (how horrible for him) got to me. The Keith/Logan scenes were particularly strong, too. There was definitely tension there. Keith wasn't all that friendly with Deputy Leo, either, even before he knew Leo had stolen the tapes. And what do Logan and Leo have in common, other than the tapes? They've both dated Keith's little girl.

Meg's death was a shock. Did she have a premonition of her own death when she told Veronica and Duncan to keep her baby from her parents? Did someone have her killed?

Bits and pieces:

— Wallace returned at the end of the episode. I like Wallace, but I didn't miss him all that much.

— Do high school students really get roped into jury duty during holiday breaks? That just felt odd to me, although I shouldn't underestimate the power of "drive-through express justice."

— The letter Duncan opened in "Ahoy, Mateys" was from Meg's aunt. Meg had planned to go live with her and have her baby.

— Deputy Leo lost a chance at a promising police career in order to take care of his ten-year-old sister with Down syndrome. Quite a guy.

— I enjoyed Veronica's and Keith's Christmas together. Very cute, as well as familiar. And I totally relate to their boredom with the ball dropping. I mean, if you've seen it once, you've seen it many, many, many times.

— So Sheriff Lamb looks good with his shirt off. He's still a tremendous jerk with almost no redeeming qualities.

— As I'm sure everybody knows, the title was a take-off of a classic jury film called Twelve Angry Men.

— A woman on the jury worked at Hearst College, and strongly suggested Veronica go there. As I said before, I've been expecting an equivalent to UC Sunnydale to pop up at some point. Bet this is it.

Quotes:

Duncan: "This has nothing to do with us."
Veronica: "Oh, no. Nothing. Your secret, illegitimate child gestating in the womb of your comatose ex-girlfriend affects neither you nor me."

Keith: "I gotta hand it to you, Sachs. You stay on message like nobody's business. If not for the little perspiration problem, you'd make a great White House press secretary."

Veronica: "Oh, hello. Which one are you? Blinky? Humpty? Zorro?"
Thumper: "The name is Thumper. Not that you really care."

Logan: "I adore what your designer has done with the men's room. That Hefty bag over the busted urinal adds a delicious wabi-sabi feel."

Keith: "For that experience, you paid fifty grand?"
Logan: "All that matters is that the world wide web won't be hosting mpegs of my old man defiling the love of my life."

Keith: "Blank tapes made you cry?"
Logan: "Yeah, I thought I'd saved the Daria marathon on them."

Two for the jury duty plot. Three for the sex tape plot. Two and a half stars,

  1. Agreed on the jury duty plot, it was kind of boring. But I loved that scene of Keith/Veronica having a Christmas dinner together. How I love their relationship.

  2. There´s a great deleted scene that would have been interesting to pursue: Veronica is on her way to visiting Meg when she notices Meg´s mom smothering Meg with a pillow. And when she leaves, Veronica grabs the pillow to discover Meg is dead and in that moment, a nurse comes in and says: "What have you done?".

  3. Loved the Logan and Keith scene, especially the fact that Logan allowed his emotions to show. Can't imagine him doing that with any other man we have seen.

I also liked the way he called Lilly 'the love of his life.' I don't believe him, but it was a kind thing to say to Keith.
