Veronica Mars: Ruskie Business

Wallace: "How many cases you working on here, Rockford?"

The theme of the spring fling? "A Total Eclipse of the Heart." Finding your soul mate or being unlucky in love was what this one was about. And heartworn Veronica was up to her ears in cases.

Meg's secret admirer turning out to be Duncan was a nice twist, and frankly, for all of me, she can have him. He's perfect for her because, despite his interesting new illness, he's as upright and boring as she is. I'm starting to wonder if Veronica should look way past the boring Duncan and the oh-so-cute and no longer hard-to-get Deputy Leo, and take a chance on the most interesting guy in the cast. That would be Logan, of course.

Logan was obviously bemused by Veronica's investigative techniques and not as fast on his feet with the acting skills as she was, but didn't they make a cute couple shopping for their honeymoon suite? I particularly liked Veronica whipping out her wedding scrapbook; nice touch there. "Wow, sugar puss. You've certainly been a busy little bee."

Trina Echolls, played by wonderful Buffy alumni Alyson Hannigan, did not make a good first impression. She is an insensitive snarky starlet, and she showed a palpable animosity toward Logan. Completely devastated by confirmation of his mother's death, Logan kept it together in front of Trina, and then broke down and cried in Veronica's arms. On some basic level that he's probably not aware of, Logan trusts Veronica. And he does not trust his own half-sister.

Logan is only a teenager and he has, in quick succession, lost his long-time girlfriend and his mother. And Trina mentioned (sarcastically) cigarette burns and broken noses. What sort of abuse has he endured? Abuse not inflicted on Trina, it seems. At least she cared enough about Logan to pick him up at the school after his drunken episode.

The final scene was the cliffhanger of Veronica finally finding her mother... and Clarence Wiedman finding them together. Now what?

Bits and pieces:

— "Catherine Lenova" did a very convincing Russian accent. Sounded genuine.

— Lynn's maiden name is, or was, Lester. Is Lynn really dead? There is still no body.

— Veronica as Madonna, Logan as Tom Cruise in Risky Business, Deputy Leo as Crockett (or was it Tubbs?). Who was Duncan? Couldn't place him.

— I could probably assign some symbolism to Logan being half-naked at the Spring Fling; his grief emotionally stripped him down. But then, I'd probably have to assign some symbolism to Veronica's choice of Manila Whore Barbie, and I don't think I can.

— Why get a police artist to sketch Duncan? Why not just show the florist a Neptune High yearbook?

— Tom Cruz had a Catahoula Leopard dog named Steve. I've never heard of Catahoula Leopard dogs. Learn something new every day.

— This episode certainly made me less confident about the efficacy of the Witness Protection Program.

— Logan's cell phone recording had today's inspirational message: a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt. :)

Quotes:

Veronica: "This is the only one that's been active. The no-limit platinum card."
Logan: "Yeah. My mom's weapon of choice."

Veronica: "How hard can it be to find an actor named Tom Cruz?"

Wallace: "About this secret mission..."
Veronica: "What'd you get?"
Wallace: "A reputation as a jock sniffer."

Veronica: "We can always use the money. I mean, wouldn't it be cool to have glasses in the kitchen that didn't have the Hamburglar on them?"

Keith: "You're a high school girl. Do some high school girl things now and then."
Veronica: "Relax, Dad. I'm cutting pictures of Ashton out of Teen People as we speak."

Logan: "But if you're coming home, who will play Dead Hooker Two on CSI this week?"

Veronica: "J. Geils was right. Love stinks. You can dress it up with sequins and shoulder pads, but one way or another, you're just going to end up alone at the spring dance, strapped into uncomfortable underwear."

Another wonderful episode,

Billie

  1. Another amazing episode. Every storyline here worked perfectly and I just love Kirsten as Veronica.

  2. Duncan was Duckie (Jon Cryer) from "Pretty in Pink" and Megan was wearing the same dress as Andie (Molly Ringwald). I guess with money you can dress up as anyone you like. Logan is a jackass but it sure seems that he has reasons to be. And Alyson Hannigan was an awesome treat. Is there anyone who hasn't been on this show?

  3. Oh Doc, you made me feel so much better. I was afraid to admit that I knew the Pretty in Pink allusion. It would (a) date me and (b) show just how big a nerd I was in the 80s. I love all those Brat Pack movies.

  4. Hahaha Logan rules
"C'mon everyone let's Wang CHUNG tonight! What? C'mon everybody, Wang Chung tonight! WANG CHUNG OR I'LL KICK YOUR ASS! Everybody!"
This episode should've been called Pantless Business instead
