Supernatural: Nightmare

Sam: "We're not gonna kill Max."
Dean: "Then what? Hand him over to the cops and say, 'Lock him up, officer, he kills with the power of his mind'?"

Sam's premonition dreams, front and center. And he's got telekinesis, even.

Most of this episode was grim and gory. For me, it got interesting the moment we discovered that Max's mother died in exactly the same bizarre way as Mary Winchester. Sam's strong, headachy premonitions and connection to Max suddenly made sense. They were connected. Chosen by... whatever it is.

And this is something that could divide Sam and Dean. Sam was feeling overwhelming empathy for Max, while Dean was ready to take him out before he could kill again. Is Sam going to turn into a raging killer like Max? In the coda, Dean said he'd always take care of Sam, but there was a shadow of a doubt on his face.

For me, the highlight of this one was Dean and Sam as junior priests from St. Augustine's. ("This has got to be a whole new low for us.") Not a surprise that the more spiritual Sam faked priest better than Dean, who pretty much just stuffed his face with funeral food before making an excuse to run around with his upgraded EMF, which now has cool green beams coming out of the front.

Max turned his rage on himself. It's really too bad. Except he would have been too dangerous to live without about ten solid years of therapy, poor guy.

Bits and pieces:

— Last week's episode began with a killer truck. This week, we began with a killer car.

— That window decapitation was scary and well done, and we didn't even see it. Which, when it's done right (and I know I'm repeating myself), is even more effective than a close-up of the grue.

— Like many of those they've helped, Mrs. Miller covered for Dean and Sam with the cops.

— This week: Saginaw, Michigan. The Escanaba Motel was so rustic that it appeared to have tree trunks right there in the room.

— Sam masqueraded very competently and successfully on the phone as a Detective MacReady, who was a character in a movie called Home Room. And Dean and Sam were Father Simmons and Father Frehley, who were in the rock group Kiss.

— In this week's hair report, Sam finally had his hair out of his eyes when he was in the turned around collar. He looked about twice as handsome as he usually does. I thought so, anyway.

Quotes:

Sam: "Both our families are cursed."
Dean: "Our family's not cursed. We just had our dark spots."
Sam: "Our dark spots are pretty dark."
Dean: "You're dark."
They were sort of kidding at the time, but it turned out to be the truth, didn't it?

Max: "Nothing says I'm sorry like a tuna casserole."

Sam: "We're lucky we had Dad."
Dean: "I never thought I'd hear you say that."

Dean: "I know what we need to do about your premonitions. I know where we have to go."
Sam: "Where?"
Dean: "Vegas."

Two stars,

Billie

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. This was pretty dark and it made me feel sorry for Max. Yes, he was killing those people but what they did and still were doing to Max was awful. I´m torn.

  2. This one (epecially the comments about "YOU'RE dark.") is much harsher in hindsight. Was Max having funny dreams about the upcoming season arcs, I wonder? Was that what pushed him over the edge?

Also, I have a thing about people getting stabbed, impaled, scratched, or otherwise hurt in the eyes or mouth. It's like my trigger for squick. Needless to say, this episode was not kind to me.

  3. Fun fact about the mini sausage scene: they weren't meant to be eaten but Jensen decided that it fit with Dean's character, so he reached out and ate one. Not realizing that he now had to eat them in every shot of that scene, which was done more than once of course. He ended up with a bit of a stomach ache and the future curse of Dean being an onscreen eater :)
