Supernatural: Simon Said

Sam: "So I'm a freak now?"
Dean: "You've always been a freak."

So Sam is one of a select generation of demon-created psychic murderers. This can't be good.

Andy and his (literally) evil twin, Anson/Webber, were an obvious parallel to what could happen to Dean and Sam. (Mostly Sam.) Andy wasn't really hurting anyone; his friends even thought his off-the-grid antics were cool. But what Anson/Webber almost did to Tracy can be compared to what Andy did to the woman he spent the night with. Andy may have left her happy and not jumping off a bridge, but did he "talk" her into it? Of course he did. Was it against her will? I'm betting it was.

Sam pointed out to Dean that the two of them kill things all the time, and that it would be easy to cross the line. Where is the line, and has Andy already crossed it? I think he has. Will Andy eventually turn into Anson/Webber? There were massive hints that he probably will. What about Sam? He's a good guy now, but what about the future? Andy had to kill his out of control twin brother. Gordon had to track down and kill his sister. Will Dean eventually have to hunt down and kill Sam?

And we're back at the Roadhouse. They're trying to give the boys a home away from home, a place where they can do research, like the library on Buffy. The writers are trying hard (maybe too hard) to give Dean a love interest, too. Dean's rendition of "I Can't Stop This Feeling" was a big clue that he was hot for Jo, although he was still keeping her at a distance. That was mostly because Dean was trying to protect Sam from other hunters. Plus, fear of Ellen. Who wouldn't be afraid of Ellen?

Bits and pieces:

— Andrew Gallagher, Anson/Webber, Max Miller, and Sam Winchester were born in 1983. Three of them experienced the house fire/mom thing, but Anson/Webber didn't. Which means that there is no way to track all of them down.

— Ash is such a hoot. It occurred to me that if they're trying to make the Roadhouse sort of like the library on Buffy, is Ash the Supernatural version of Giles? Giles was played by Anthony Stewart Head. Check out the initials. Coincidence?

— "Dr. Badass is: In."

— Jo hustles video games. And she likes whiny rock ballads.

— This week, we went to Guthrie, Oklahoma. In the opener, as they were on the way to the Roadhouse, the DJ on the radio mentioned "Rockin' Nebraska." Is the Roadhouse in Nebraska?

— Dean really liked the van with the barbarian queen and the polar bear, and the love nest interior. I love Dean's questionable taste. At least he knows what he likes.

— The brothers masqueraded as lawyers. The nice suits were back.

— Jensen Ackles sounded a little sick in this episode, like he had a cold. And Jared Padalecki had a cast visible on his right wrist.

Quotes:

Sam: "Hey, Ash. We need your help."
Ash: "Oh, hell, then. I guess I need my pants."

Dean: "REO Speedwagon?"
Jo: "Damn right, REO. Kevin Cronin sings it from the heart."
Dean: "He sings it from the hair. There's a difference."

Dean: (to the Impala) "I'm sorry, baby. I'll never leave you again."

Dean: "Not exactly a serial killer's lair, though. There's no clown paintings on the walls or scissors stuck in victims' photos. But the tiger..."
Sam: "Hegel, Kant, Wittgenstein. That's some pretty heavy reading, Dean."
Dean: "Yeah. And Moby Dick's bong."

Andy: "Just go get a cup of coffee, all right? These aren't the droids you're looking for."
Dean: "Awesome."

Andy: "What am I supposed to do now?"
Dean: "You be good, Andy. Or we'll be back."

Dean: "That was mind control. It's like being roofied, man. It doesn't count."
Sam: "What?"
Dean: "No. I'm calling do-over."
Sam: "What are you, seven?"

Another good one. Three out of four stars,

Billie

Billie Doux adores Supernatural which is a good thing since apparently, it's eternal.

  1. Very good episode and I love the addition of Ash, Jo and Ellen. Particularly Ash.

  2. I noticed when Sam and Dean were looking at the HH Holmes file that one of the photos was of a Jack the Ripper victim.

  3. Fantastic catch on Ash = ASH.

Am I the only one who will never hear that REO Speedwagon song again without thinking about Finn in 'Glee'?

  4. The name Anson Webber was bugging me, so I spent some time on Google. OK - now, I'm really going to show my age.

ANSON Williams played Potsie WEBBER for ten years on 'Happy Days'. Not sure what, if anything, it means, but a fun little factoid.

  5. I just watched this episode foe the first time and really enjoyed it. I thought the actors who played the twins did a great job since I found their scene together to be fascinating. It can't be easy to take the attention away from the Winchester brothers even briefly and still make it interesting. I hope to see more of Andy.

Great catch on ASH, Billie. I had been saying to my husband on a number of occasions that maybe Bobbie (name ?) was the Giles of Supernatural or even in this episode, I said maybe it is Ellen (name?), but your observation that it is Ash is spot on! I love having all of these recurring characters. As much as I enjoyed Season 1, it suffered from lack of characters.

  6. Chris, I also went to the Glee place.

I laughed out loud when Andy shouted "I have an evil twin!"

He truly is the best guy. Only recently discovered that he played the role of one of Homer's friends on October Sky
