Martha: "Omigod, you were robbed? Are you all right? Did he have a gun?"Jonathan: "No, he had a very fast pair of sneakers."
Bart Allen was snarky and adorable, warts and all. Very endearing, and very like the traditional Flash.
I really liked that Bart (quite logically, as a teenager with no job skills or family) made his living dishonestly. And that he wasn't a meteor freak, because that's getting very old. The way Clark dealt with Bart was also semi-sweet. When he wasn't being all older brother and paternal, Clark had fun doing the superpower thing with Bart, and was honest about being tempted to do just what Bart did with his powers.
Lex may have stopped investigating Clark, but he was still hot for the Kawache cave stuff and had a brand new artifact, promptly stolen by Bart. Sure, it was so predictable that Bart would take Clark's virtuous example to heart and return it, but I still enjoyed this episode a lot. Very Smallville, after all.
Lex and Clark were all big friends again, but note that they both kept the fact that they knew about the magic tree map thingy from each other. What happened with Bart served to illustrate that Clark can never be truly close to anyone but his parents because he cannot share his true self. Clark and Lex's friendship will always have serious limitations, and they will always be forced to actively keep stuff from each other. Clark could be close friends with Bart. But Bart left, didn't he?
Bits and pieces:
— There was a little flash symbol on Bart's backpack. The word "Flash" was never mentioned, of course.
— A little parental angst for a change. Jonathan wasn't doing too well. Many, many prescriptions, and he was acting a bit needy, while Martha was escaping from her worries by working too hard at the Talon.
— Lana told Jason the truth about her church-inflicted tattoo.
— Truck wreck in the opener. And Clark threw one of the bad guys. Two points.
— Kyle Gallner, who played Bart Allen, is now a regular on Veronica Mars.
— Chloe has another new hairdo. That's two, and we're not even halfway through the season yet.
— No Lois. :( Guess she's gone for now.
Quotes:
Clark: "... Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West, whatever your name really is."
Clark: "Chloe, this is my friend, Bart. He's from..."
Bart: "The future."
Chloe: "Really?"
Bart: "Yeah. I ran all the way back in time to tell you that we're still in love a hundred years from now."
Bart: "Dude, there's a midnight show of Speed at Mann's Chinese theater, best popcorn, and Keanu rules in that one. So you wanna go?"
Martha: "A summer in Paris has really given you some insight, Lana."
And a lot of black outfits and dangly silver earrings.
Bad guy: "Let's see if you're faster than a speeding bullet."
I think this one was fun enough to rate four stars,

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.
I see the beginning of the end of the Lex/Clark friendship. Too many lies and too much distrust -- in spite of what they are saying to each other.
ReplyDeleteThe friendship feels different to me, almost as though they are both forcing it to exist. Probably easier than admitting what is really going on.
Yeah. I was gonna say their break-up felt too manufactured and part of why I didn't really like the recent season finale, even with that iconic three-way cliffhanger. But I think it works now seeing the sadly insincere way they got back together again... dead cat bounce. Sad... I'm not ready.
ReplyDeleteOh but that was just responding to the previous comment. The episode itself ruled, instant classic with The Flash's introduction. And kind of amusing to revisit that ending scene where even though I STILL don't really see it it's been meme'd on ytube to have gay connotations between them. I suppose the "Are you sure there's nothing I can do to change your mind?" can be kind of suggestive.
