Supernatural: Sex and Violence

Dean: "The middle of Basic Instinct, and you bang Sharon Stone?"

Dean finally got to investigate a case with strippers. The preview made it look like a romp. And then they went and got deep on us. When you think about it, it's amazing that a show about two brash young men hunting monsters can be so poignant.

At first I thought that the Siren would take down Sam, and have him kill Cara. And then, of course, I thought Cara was the Siren, since she was exactly Sam's type. But no, she was just lucky enough to hook up with Sam. (And she didn't even die in the end, or anything. How nice.)

So the misdirect with Nick the FBI guy completely took me in. They had me going with the business card and the decepto phone bank at Bobby's and the classic car rock music talk and the way he was just clicking away with Dean like his new bestest bud, and it was all so cute that I actually didn't realize he was the Siren until he and Dean were in the car together. Right before the saliva scene.

Watching Dean and Sam try to kill each other was outright painful. I almost couldn't watch. The hurtful things they said to each other went right to the heart of their differences. Sam feels that Dean is holding him back, that Sam is better and stronger. And what Dean really wants more than anything is for Sam to look up to him again. Dean doesn't think he can trust Sam any more. It's so sad.

But hallelujah. At least Bobby came back, literally in the Nick of Time. Hey, multiple pun.

Bits and pieces:

— Loved the phone bank at Bobby's. I truly did. But we all know Bobby isn't there a lot of the time. Who answers the phone when Bobby is out hunting monsters?

— Shooting saliva. How new and gagworthy.

— Dean was visibly put out that the cute doctor preferred Sam to him. I guess in Dean's perfect world, the girls always go for Dean and Sam always does what Dean tells him.

— Madison, current Ruby, Cara. Not all monsters, but there's definitely a physical type involved there.

— This week: Bedford, Iowa. We got a couple of kitsch-a-licious motel rooms, the first in aqua and gold and the second in red and black.

— The Honey Wagon Bar? Isn't "honey wagon" slang for portable toilet? Would you go to a bar named after a toilet?

— The guys were public defenders as well as FBI agents. Sam was special agent Sam Stiles, and Dean was Dean Murdoch. Anyone know what those names mean? I got nothing.

Quotes:

Dean: "Sounds like Ozzie and Harriet."
Sam: "More like The Shining."

Dean: "Strippers, Sammy. Strippers. We're on an actual case involving strippers. Finally!"

Sam: "What do you think? She infects them during sex?"
Bobby: "Maybe."
Dean: "Supernatural STD."

This might be a four. In fact, I rarely take back a rating, but last week's might be a four, too. What did you think? Am I just overreacting to a good episode?

  1. Stiles and Murdoch were the two main characters of an old TV show from the 60's called Route 66. It starred Martin Milner and George Maharis as two friends who traveled cross country (presumably on the famous Route 66) in a cool convertible and the show's theme song became quite popular ;-)

  2. Good episode. I, too, loved Bobby and his phone bank. Awesome!

I thought Agent Nick was an actual agent until he was into the car and the music. And then I knew something fishy was up. He was too perfect a fit with Dean. I like that that's the route the writers took. Having Dean's perfect other be some ridiculously hot stripper would have been way too obvious. I loved that his most secret desire was to have his little brother back (sort of).

One of my favorite little bits in the episode was that all of the Siren's stripper aliases were Disney princesses: Jasmine (Aladdin), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Ariel (Little Mermaid), and Belle (Beauty & the Beast). (My daughter is two-and-a-half, so Disney princesses are big around here.) That's actually part of the reason I suspected Nick and not Cara; she didn't have a Disney princess name that I could easily place. Not that Nick did, but he really was Dean's dream bud. :)

  3. Hey Billie -- Great reviews! I'm a long-time reader, but admittedly, I've never commented before -- I figured I'd give my two cents on the naming of the "Honey Wagon" bar. In my experience, a film/tv production trailer is oft known as the "honeywagon". Wiktionary gives a clearer definition as: "a type of multi-room trailer used by film and television productions". The reference had me in stitches.

  4. I'm fairly certain that the mini-fight between Dean and Sam was a foreshadowing of what's to come... GRR!

  6. They were "poisoned" by the siren but all the things they were saying to each other is completely true and how they feel about each other.

  7. The fight has left me very sad. I've been waiting for it since the beginning of the season - there are just too many lies, secrets and half-truths between these two right now.

But the saddest bit was the very end:

Sam: "So -- So, we're good?"
    Dean: "Yeah, we're good."

Yet another lie - that neither one of them believes. Some things you simply don't come back from. I truly hope the boys find their way.
