Smallville: Roulette

It was really hard for me to get involved with this one because (1) they have done this Saw-like sort of plot too many times, and (2) I never quite believed that Oliver could be suicidal, because he's just not the type of guy who falls apart like that.

But at least they resolved it. Oliver is back in green, and ready to take on those rogue Kandorians. And it was quite funny (and unexpected) that Chloe was behind all of the mayhem. Chloe has gotten rather dark in the past few seasons, hasn't she?

I was confused several times about whether some or all of it was in Oliver's head. I was also confused about them rebooting the Oliver/Lois relationship. I guess they're not. But they need to create some sort of love triangle to continue keeping Lois and Clark apart, don't they? And Oliver is right there and in the cast, isn't he?

Lois gets knocked out in every episode these days. Yes, it's a fine Superman tradition. But when it's not a comic, though, one keeps thinking that eventually there's going to be brain damage.

When the woman (the bad guy who wasn't) gave Oliver the red pill, all I could think of was, Olly, don't you wish you'd taken the blue pill?

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. I actually enjoyed this episode although I think it was more like the David Fincher movie, The Game, than those naff Saw films. But it is great to finally have Ollie out of his rut and back in action.

But the best bit for me was Clark and Lois' shark movie night/laundry day. Their awkward little dance around each other is a hundred times more entertaining than all the Clack/Lana moping we’ve had to put up with over the years.

  2. You're right, Mark: the shark movie night thing was cute. I think I've gotten so tired of the Lois/Clark tease that I'm just not enjoying it like I used to, though. :)

  3. Yes, it seemed like they were thinking of re-booting the Oliver/Lois relationship, but I sensed a lot of heat between Oliver and Chloe. Now, that's a couple I could get excited about!

  4. Does Chloe have a job anymore? I know she's doing all this watchtower stuff, but who exactly is paying her- has it been mentioned? I don't know where the League would get income from to pay her, and it doesn't look like Dr Hamilton is employing her to do anything for him...

  5. "I don't know where the League would get income from to pay her..." Oliver/Queen Industries. Same bankroll that's funding the decking out of Watchtower with top-of-the-line gear. Seems Emil has at least some control of QI funds. Probably wouldn't be hard to secure a living stipend for Chloe.

  6. OK... Who the hell is Chloe anymore?? She's gaming people, she's trash-talking Clark. I don't even know whats going on anymore...

  7. Oliver would be too smart to type his password into a strange laptop.

  8. I'm a little down on this season. I had my hopes up when general consensus seems to be that after the showrunner change, the new ones settle in properly after a season and the last 2 seasons of this show are great. But so far I'm preferring season 8 over this. I really miss the Blur subplot... THIS season feels like the adjustment period tbh. Clark trying to become a hero and quitting on his social life cold turkey, but not really? Oliver having angst? Yeah, no.. I'm glad you're glad Lana's still gone, but she's not really. She's still in the show in spirit with yet another possible love triangle now, with Lois. And this episode she called Clark out on lying to her, which made my heart sink. We're really back on this again? No :( C'mon...
I forget to praise it in the review for the previous season finale but I really loved that "final" conversation between the Red Blue Blur and Lois where he asks her to print his death message (in the event of). It was really beautiful, with her asking him to meet her and let her see his face, admitting she just wants to see a side of him that no one else has. I wish that was the end of it. Clark contacting her as the Blur this season just because he's lonely and she's aware of it kinda ruins it for me.

Lol. She never forgave him for keeping tabs on everyone with Lois as The Blur. And the Lois-specific telepathy thing probably compounded that. (I don't really believe this btw, I concede to the show blatantly proving that Chloe moved on from him even though I effin hate it)
And the whole Zod + followers thing is not something I'm really interested in... So far the material is pretty decent but I'm not in the mood for... soldiers and their mentality and stuff. Zod did that thing where a villain kills a well-meaning minion after misleading them with praise/forgiveness to prove his uh... ruthlessness I guess, and I think that's a very bad sign and harkens back to Lex in a not-encouraging way.
