"Take me to her, or I take you to the Drake."
Better but still not good enough. I don't think 666 Park Avenue will ever really tap into its full potential until its series finale in a couple of episodes. It'll probably be epic enough to make me feel disappointed the show got cancelled, but so far 666 sort of deserves the fate it got.
There's really nothing worse than a show so ripe with potential (in this case, the premise and the cast) only for it to consistently suck the life out of it on a weekly basis. Ringer is the closest example I can think of, although that show was ten times worse, of course. Anything with Vanessa Williams is automatically better,
The problem here is that there's a lot of interesting tidbits throughout but they don't come together as a cohesive whole. Take Whoopi Goldberg's guest turn for example. Her character Maris was crazy intriguing, but it's too little too late. Her short scenes with Gavin were dripping with mystery, yet the writers pretty much wrote her out of the show by the end of the hour. Had she been introduced in the pilot, she would have been the perfect foil and undoubtedly would have imbued 666 with a lot more excitement and momentum.
The Jane arc bored me. The flashbacks were serviceable enough, but it all felt much too generic and didn't really offer anything I hadn't seen before. The Sasha reveal however was a great one. I don't know how I didn't see the Laurel twist coming but it somehow makes sense and does a good job of unifying a bunch of storylines. I'm definitely eager to see the whole thing play out.
Sinister Snippets
- Aggressive Vanessa Williams. Love it.
- So Maris is keeping Gavin outside her house using that symbol?
- Cop guy is growing on me. He at least has more personality than Henry the mop.
- Why did Whoopi turn into a pile of birds? Ugh.
- All in all, a bunch of intriguing moments in a show that's still isn't as effective as it should be.
3 out of 5 white birds.

Normally, when a show does a twist as well as the Laurel/Sasha twist, I would be tempted to re-watch the first episodes again to see what I missed. Wow, is that not going to happen this time around!
ReplyDeleteThis twist is a perfect example of what this show should have been doing all along. And, I agree with you completely that the Maris character should have had a much longer arc.
I'm hanging in because I know there are only four episodes left and I want to see how they wrap it all up.
I think that the birds was a symbol like in LOST good vs evil.
ReplyDeleteThere needs to be more shown about the staircase...To much left open without any indications of any clues upcoming
