  1. I'm overjoyed that Mandy Patinkin, Jonathan Banks and Emilia Clarke were all nominated, but at the same time I'm really disappointed that Tatiana Maslany wasn't nominated. She didn't just deliver the of the best performance of the year, she delivered several of the best performances of the year. I know it was a long shot but she really deserved to be nominated.

And just what do Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins have to do to get nominated again?

  2. I can't believe you typed up the entire list, Chris! It's interesting stuff, but they put a PDF of the full list online for a reason! :)

Overall, I don't have a lot of issues with the folks that were nominated, as many are quite deserving. I guess it is great to have so many quality shows and performances to enjoy, but it's a bummer that it is generally hard for new folks or performances to break into the Emmy field. I would have LOVED for Tatiana Maslany to be nominated, even though her odds were long.

I'm also rather bummed that Mads Mikkelsen Hannibal and Noah Emmerich The Americans weren't recognized. Bump Jim Carter and Peter Dinklage out of that field. Peter rocks, but he wasn't even the best supporting actor on GOT this year (ahem, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau). Mikkelsen and Emmerich gave measured, relatively still performances that were utterly compelling. It was often quite hard to take your eyes off them when they were on the screen. Ultimately, I'm pulling for the brilliant Jonathan Banks in that category, but I really would have liked to see those two men at least nominated.

I'm also rather bummed at the lack of nominations for Justified, which was really very good this year. I would have loved to see Jim Beaver (Shelby) and Patton Oswalt (Constable Bob) get recognition for their guest turns, and I think 'Decoy' was worthy of a directing nomination.

I will say that in the "new blood" department, I was happy to see Emilia Clarke in the mix (even though I'm hoping this is finally Anna Gunn's year), and I was pleasantly surprised to see Adam Driver get a nomination for his work on Girls. He manages to make Adam omewhat sympathetic, which is quite remarkable considering how disturbing that character can be.

  3. I can not take the Emmys seriously when Ryan Seacrest is nominated for an award and Tatiana Maslany is not.

I am glad to see Mayim Bialik nominated. She is the best thing about Big Bang Theory.

  4. No love for Rectify and Hannibal that's really disappointing.

I don't get the love for Downton and especially the male cast. It's good but for me there are definitely better shows and performances.

Sadly again no nomination for Justified and Sons of Anarchy. But I'm happy for Rupert Friend, Carry Preston and Bobby Cannavale.

  5. P.S. No nomination for Spartacus in the stunt choreography category is a joke.

  6. nice to see Portlandia get (a tiny bit) of attention. I agree that it's sad Tatiana Maslany wasn't nominated, but Orphan Black isn't the Emmys sort of show. It's taken them a while to warm up to the non-Peter Dinklage parts of Game of Thrones too. Maybe next year for OB?

It was nice to see Scandal get some love too, but I wish Tony Goldwyn had gotten a nod in addition to Kerry Washington.

    Other Random Thoughts:

Two Whedon discoveries for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama series. I really want Elementary to win for Main Title design and theme. Mamet vs. Stoppard. I thought Homeland was disappointing this season?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I was disappointed not to see Jennifer Carpenter's name on the list. She did a wonderful job on Dexter this last year and deserves at least a nomination (although Claire Daines will most likely win).

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's a joke that Emilia Clarke gets a nomination and Jennifer Carpenter gets snubbed after that strong season of hers.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have to echo the disappointment that Jennifer Carpenter was snubbed. She was amazing last season, and she's amazing this season.

  10. Homeland had a very disapponting second season-but Danes and Lewis were both stellar. The acting was fine, the writing kinda sucked. Too bad about Hannibal-Mikkelson was great and Hugh Dancy really shone as Will.
I really don't want Lena Dunham to win. Can't stand Hannah. The second season of Girls was so hyped but so completely useless.

  11. Does anyone know why Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series have seven nominees while the others have only six?

  12. Mark, it's usually done when there is a tie or a near tie based on this article from slate.com:

  14. sunbunny, based on what I am hearing about that show, it seems like she could have gotten 6 or 7 nominations all by herself...I'm definitely going to add it to my list of "need to watch" shows!

    sunbunny -- it's a date!

Best article I have seen on who and what got snubbed. Many of them you all have already mentioned.

  19. Isn't Peter Dinklage the lead in Game of Thrones since season 2? I know it's the sort of show that doesn't really have 'leads' - and I've no idea who I'd suggest the lead actress is, though possibly Michelle Fairley for season 3 - but still, he's in a prime position on the credits and tends to appear in more episodes than everyone else. But I guess they thought they'd have in supporting?

    ReplyDelete
  20. That should say 'a better chance in supporting'!
