Sunday Discussion: What shows are you most looking forward to this fall?

Four seasons. Not enough.
When I started posting these Sunday discussion topics a few weeks ago, the first question I wanted to ask was, "What shows are you guys looking forward to this fall?" And then every other TV site on the internet posted the same question that very week, and I thought, do I want to look like I'm imitating all the other TV web sites? So I went with another question.

And then this morning I thought, so what? I'm posting it anyway. What shows are you most looking forward to this fall?

Personally, what I'm most looking forward to is the final and way too brief season of the terrific time travel series Continuum that starts September 11. I hope that creator and showrunner Simon Barry has found a terrific way to end this thrilling but very complicated series. I'm a big fan of The Walking Dead even though the excessive zombie gore grosses me out, and I can't wait to see the possible fall of the Ricktatorship in season six. I'm pleasantly anticipating but slightly dreading the third season of Sleepy Hollow, and hoping they fix what went off the rails in season two. (Did you hear there is going to be a Bones crossover on Sleepy Hollow? How can they possibly do a Bones crossover when one series is set in "reality" and the other really, really isn't?)

Of course, there's the eleventh season of my beloved Supernatural, (eleven!), the seventh Elena-less season of The Vampire Diaries, and I hear Veronica Mars's Jason Dohring is joining The Originals, possibly making a good show even better. I'm looking forward to The Good Wife, even though the next season will lack my two favorite characters, played by Archie Panjabi and Matthew Goode. I also enjoy Arrow, The Flash, and Agents of SHIELD. As far as the new stuff goes, hmm. I'll try a lot of it, but nothing this fall is exciting me yet. Now the winter premieres, that's another story.

What shows are you most looking forward to this fall, and why? (And here's Josie's list of fall premieres if you need a reminder of what's coming. I did.)

  1. And hey, if you're in the U.S., happy Labor Day weekend!

  2. All the returning shows I'm looking forward too, especially a Morgan heavy TWD and an Elenaless TVD.

The bits about where SHIELD is going sound like a lot of fun, and combined with next spring's Captain America: Civil War, this should be a big season.

Jason Dohring coming to the Originals sounds too good to be true, I hope his character is a good one.

Arrow fell a bit last season for me, not too far, but not as good as season one and two. That being said, the trailer for S4 looks like a lot of fun.

I'm a touch worried about the Flash, they seem to be throwing too much into the mix, and I fear that it might make the show cluttered and unfocused.

Poor Sleepy Hollow, I truly hope it gets back on its feet. The leads are so good to be wasted on sub-par plotting.

I'm also looking forward to Continuum, The Good Wife, Supernatural, Blacklist and Gotham. I'm also tentatively interested in Minority Report, Blindspot, and Supergirl.

  3. As ever, my most anticipated show is The Walking Dead. But this year, I've started avoiding all the pre-season hype other than the trailers, because I don't want too much information about what may or may not be coming. (I actually didn't watch the Talking Dead teaser special before the Fear premiere!) Expectations led to too much disappointment for me in the spring, so maybe fewer expectations will improve the experience?

Other shows I'm excited for include Continuum's final run, the second seasons of Fargo and the French series The Returned, and the return of Star Wars: Rebels in October.

I'm also looking forward to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Agents of SHIELD, and The Flash (though I definitely share J.D.'s concerns about it starting seem a bit overstuffed based on all the pre-season press).

  4. I second your feelings on Continuum. Really looking forward to that. What started out as a decent but kinda generic 'out of own time' procedural, has really become something special.

Supernatural, i'm wary about. Not a big fan of some of the plot/character decisions Carver's made. (Guess which one I hate the most). Hopefully he'll get his act together and The CW won't drag it out too long. In some ways I wish it ended after season 5, but then we wouldn't have had some of those the wonderful episodes/characters we've had over the last few years, so there's that.

The Flash was pretty good (also pretty overrated), Arrow was quite disappointing (not sure if i'll continue watching), Agents of SHIELD was pretty great (so was Agent Carter but that's next year :( ),

I'm cautiously optimistic about Doctor Who. While there was a lot to like about last season, there was some stuff that didn't really work. Namely the Danny/Doctor conflict and The Doctor's antipathy towards soldiers (It's always been about the military mind, not soldiers themselves). Peter Capaldi was great though and so was The Doctor (barring the soldier 'hate'), and Jenna was great as usual, as was Clara.

Moffat is a great writer when he's got his head screwed on right. The trailer looked interesting and the writers line-up is pretty good so here's hoping.

  5. Gotham. With all its Sin City madness. Penguin is so..very appealing. And appalling.

Agents of SHIELD. Skye, May and all.

Law and Order: SVU Solely for Raul Esparza.

Good Wife: Sans Matthew Goode and Archie Panjabi-but with Peter Gallagher-sigh.

Sleepy Hollow-May Ichabbie rule all. And Jenny get to kick ass.

    Lost Girl-final episodes.

  6. What? A Bones crossover with Sleepy Hollow? Huh. Well Homicide crossed over with X-files once..can't rememeber seeing that. Munch got fuel for his conspiracy theories I think.

  7. I think the ones I'm looking forward to most is SHIELD, Arrow, Flash, iZombie, Supernatural, Jane the Virgin and the final part of Haven.

I'm looking forward to Doctor Who, but it's taking me much longer to warm up to this non-cuddly version of the Doctor. However, I still love Clara and I do trust Moffat to at least give us an entertaining story.

I really hope they manage to fix Sleepy Hollow and I'll definitely be watching, if only to see how on earth they manage that Bones crossover.

Castle is still enjoyable, although mostly as a background show, but I sort of hope that this is the last season. I really want to see Nathan Fillion in something a bit more challenging.

As for the new shows, I'll probably sample a few of them, like Minority Report, Blindspot, Quantico and Supergirl.

  8. The new ones I'm the most interested in are Minority Report, Blindspot, and Supergirl, although I'm expecting I won't like Supergirl. J.D. said the pilot is good and I believe him, but I think the suits are going to screw with it so much that the audience that would normally go for it, won't. But I've been wrong before.

  9. Agents of Shield, the continuing adventures of Daisy, Coulson, May, FizzSimmons, et al.

Doctor Who, which I anticipate fearfully, because Jenna Coleman has been so good as Clara that I'm afraid this might be her last season. Though it'd be fun and interesting to see what else Mr. Moffat has in store for us.

iZombie was a total blast last season, so I'm excited about the continuing adventures of Liv, Major, Ravi, Blaine etc.

Supergirl seemed to have a good buzz amongst my friends who've seen the first episode at conventions. I'd try it out.

There's an adaptation of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instrument novels coming in January to ABC Family. As a fan of her book, I'm looking forward to the series. The movie "City of Bones" was adequate but altered and eliminated plot details as a necessity. To be honest, I'm not looking forward to the main romance of Clary / Jace, but the alt pairing of Alec / Magnus, and Simon, who had my favorite character arc amongst 6 books.

  10. This is an interesting question. I cut the cord this summer, so my days of a DVR are over. That means that I have to decide which shows I want to watch right away, and which shows I'm willing to let pile up for a massive online marathon once they become available on Netflix or other streaming sites.

I'll probably stay current on Black-ish, because a good sitcom makes lunchtime much more fun.

I'm totally going to hate-watch Heroes Reborn. I've never hate-watched anything before. I'm looking forward to it. [Rubs hands together like gleefully evil rat.]

The Good Wife, The Flash, and The Vampire Diaries will be weekly events for me. But I might save Arrow for a marathon. Ditto Supergirl. And probably Continuum, since I think time travel is more fun in big clumps.

And I will catch up on Person of Interest before the next season starts. I promise you, Sunbunny! I promise!

  11. I echo Jess' sentiment on Fargo and The Returned. I'm also really looking forward to The Knick in October. I fell very deeply in love with that show last year and now own the blu-rays and know every beat of each song of the score. Thanks for asking, Billie. I love these Sunday posts you've done.

  12. I can't really think of many new shows that I'm excited about seeing. Jessica Jones is probably the only one.

  13. I want to be excited about Arrow but last season was so nuts it's tough to see where they're going this season.

Flash is my baby but my fear is the writers will fall into a hero of the week thing and stop the focus and development of Grant Gustin (who I felt was finally bringing some depth to the role.)

Supergirl has potential but how much will be squashed? I'm with Billie on this one.

I'm afraid to hope for Gotham but I think there's a chance this will be its breakout season.

  14. The only ones I'm watching on the list are Doctor Who and The Good Wife, and I can't say I'm looking forward much to The Good Wife with two great characters gone. At least all the running for office stuff is gone - that ruined the last season for me. The genre show not on the list I am looking forward to returning is The Leftovers, although I'm worried about that one as apparently it's had a soft reboot. I suspect they're going to take all al the stuff I really liked about it. The show I'm really looking forward to returning is Nashville, my guilty pleasure.

  15. Gotham and Blacklist for me. Hubby looks forward to Agents of Sheild and Sleepy Hollow, which I watch with him, but don't turn me on as much as they do him. My 14 yo daughter loves Vampire Diaries, flash and Arrow ( I take it from the comments above they are returning. my ultimate wait is fro Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul and Orphan Bleck, but I know all these don't start till the spring. And Walking Dead for me!
