Review by An Honest Fangirl
It was a very tough call for what picture to put up top. I almost chose Chloe and Lucifer lying side by side playing Monopoly, but the unicorn ultimately won out.
There was a lot of talk this episode about "top hats" and "shoes," and which was better or more interesting. And like most things on Lucifer, the title character gets the complete opposite message that he's supposed to.
Lucifer was determined to prove that he and all of the other "top hats" had the superior lifestyle. They weren't boring. They were the more interesting people who had more interesting, exciting lives. But our two "top hats" of the episode, Mack and Esther, turn out to be fakes. They put on a show for the world when in reality they're lying about what they've done. They're just as boring as the "shoes," but they put in exhausting effort to appear otherwise.
And as much as Lucifer hates lying, he's been doing the exact same thing. "Lucifer Morningstar" is as much a facade and performance as anything that Mack and Esther were doing. The only difference is that I'm not sure if Lucifer knows that he's performing or not. Over the course of the series, we've continuously seen glimpses of the real Lucifer, one who is vulnerable, and wants to have his family get along, and who genuinely enjoys playing Monopoly with the Detective and her spawn. But, and we've seen this before this season when dealing with the Sinnerman stealing Lucifer's shtick, he pushes back against anyone believing that he is anything other than the Devil who enjoys wine, women (and men), and song.
See, I think that the whole point of this episode was to show that Lucifer secretly wants to be a "shoe," especially if that means being with Chloe. Benji and Kim were a pretty clear mirror for Lucifer and Chloe. He was a big shot, but grew tired of the shallowness and superficiality of the world that he was living in, and found someone who loved him simply for being himself. A "top hat" found happiness and love in a "shoe." Lucifer just isn't ready to embrace that, not after the mess that happened last season when he and Chloe got together.
He still kept the shoe Monopoly piece, though. Even if he ultimately ended the episode spending the night with a woman wearing a top hat (hello, Obvious Symbolism), he recognizes that the shoe is important to him. So, baby steps. Lucifer is all about the Devil's personal growth, after all.

The other major plot, one completely disconnected from the other two, was Linda dealing with her ex-husband's death. I really, really enjoyed these scenes. They were emotional and powerful, and touched on some things that I never considered before. I felt for Linda when she said that she used to wonder if she would be reincarnated as a chameleon, except now she knows that that's impossible.
It's scary to know the truth, so I'm glad that Amenadiel was there to point out that she was the same "clueless idiot" as before. He was very sweet and understanding with her, and I even got some small romantic vibes. It was nice to see Linda being the one taken care of as opposed to taking care of all the celestial beings in her life.

I see that Charlotte and Dan still haven't made up.
Chloe was wearing the necklace that Lucifer gave her.

I really enjoyed this one. It was a lot of fun.

An Honest Fangirl loves superheroes, science fiction, fantasy, and really bad horror movies.
The Monopoly metaphor was definitely fun, and I wanted more of Lucifer playing with Chloe and Trixie. Because I think I'm ready for him to stop proclaiming that he's all about sleeping around, when he clearly *wants* to spend quality time playing Monopoly with Chloe and Trixie.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Ella and Charlotte thing was just too weird. Making her a prosecutor is a good idea, though. It will give her a chance to redeem herself and maybe learn to actually care about doing the right thing.
I thought Amenadiel was about to kiss Linda while they were on the beach. They'd be cute together.
I like Charlotte. I said this before and I'm going to repeat it: I didn't like Helfer as Mom, but I really enjoy her as Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteI do understand Ella's desire to avoid her. Part of it is because of that knife that Charlotte was wielding without realizing that, and a funny-but-not-really joke right after it. But the main part — c'mon, if somebody really pushes YOU to mentor him/her on a topic that you might have intuitive grasp on but never really studied, especially if that someone is way more confident and intimidating than you — won't you freak out as well? And that's nerdy girl Ella we're talking about.
My problem with this episode is Lucifer being made into a buffoon. I mean, yes, he sometimes can be fooled by a front that people put forward. In all his pride, he might be quite prejudiced, trusting first impressions. But I feel this was too much. He is not stupid, you know.
And did I mention I hate it when people try to be who they are not? Lucinda was pretty painful to watch.
Billie, I too thought there would be a kiss between Amenadiel and Linda. But I don't think that pair would actually work, at least for now.
Lucifer pushes back against his feelings...I think he was surprised how much he loved the simple act of playing a game with Chloe and Trixie. Thats a whole different type of intimacy he does not know.

Linda as always...Amazing.
I was surprised that Ella didn't do the most obvious thing when Charlotte asked for her help: offer to take her to church.
ReplyDeleteIt's a logical solution, given her Catholicism, and one the best ways to make sure Charlotte never asks her for help again.
