Lucifer: Anything Pierce Can Do I Can Do Better

Review by An Honest Fangirl

"So, I ask you, the Devil, what is it that you truly desire?"

Well, I'm not the Devil, but I desire to write reviews in a timely fashion. (Sorry guys, the ball got away from me on this one.)

I actually only just watched the episode. That's how I do most of my reviews. I sit down, watch the show, and then immediately get to writing. I think that part of the lateness of this review was my reluctance to watch this particular episode. I didn't want to sit down to 45 minutes of cringing through Lucifer's tone-deaf decisions. Plus, I was spoiled fairly early on as to the ending of this week's episode, which was a writing decision that I'm not really all that happy with.

I can understand, on a logical level, why Chloe accepted Pierce's proposal. She's been hurt by men who freak out at the slightest sign of intimacy or commitment. She said as much at the top of the episode. So having Pierce offer what is widely seen as the epitome of both those things had to be incredibly tempting. Honestly, I have two big issues with this relationship.

The first is the length of time. How long have they been dating? A few months? It wasn't very long ago that Chloe was hesitant to introduce Pierce to Trixie, not to mention the fact that Pierce literally broke her heart last episode. A bunch of gifts, and now she's ready to marry him? It just feels wrong. The second issue that I have is that it's clear that Pierce isn't going to survive the season, so at this point, I'm just waiting for the inevitable break up.

Before this episode, I had no idea how Lucifer was going to end this season, but I think this went a long way towards moving those pieces into position. We have five episodes left, which is honestly a lot more than I was expecting. By the end of those five episodes, Maze is going to fulfill her original plan: kill Pierce and pin it on Lucifer, but Amenadiel will willingly take the fall instead. It's the only way that I can see the current story threads resolving in a way that makes sense.

Maze is clearly still dead set on her plan, no matter how much Trixie's understandable rejection might hurt her, and is working on making Pierce mortal. She just doesn't know that it's already happened. Amenadiel is a character that I just really think has run his course. I don't see anywhere else for his character to go, and taking a blame for a murder so that Lucifer can go free would fit into his whole "test" arc. The only person that I'm not sure about is Charlotte. She's very quickly backsliding into morally corrupt behavior. Will she fully embrace her evilness and go back to being a prosecutor? Will the writers try and give her another redemption arc? I'm not sure.

Of course, all of this kind of hinges on whether or not Lucifer receives a fourth season. As much as I hate to say it, we're currently on the bubble. The ratings aren't looking good. As much as I've been a little dissatisfied with this season, that still makes me really sad. I enjoy this world and these characters. I want to spend more time with them. I want to have at least a season of Chloe being in the know.

I'm glad that Linda finally pointed out that Lucifer was just using his father and his wings as an excuse to keep the truth from Chloe. That whole scene between them made me tear up. It was beautiful and moving, and Lucifer finally acknowledged out loud that he screwed up and that he knew what course of action he should have taken. It was obvious all throughout the episode that Chloe just wanted someone to be truthful and honest and vulnerable to her about their feelings. It's just too bad that that's Lucifer's one big weakness. Her face during the dinner at Lux said it all. If Lucifer hadn't royally screwed that up, she would have reciprocated his feelings.

I'll be curious to see how Lucifer outwardly reacts to the engagement. Will he gracefully bow out, accepting that he screwed up and that Chloe made her choice, or will he be very petty and passive aggressive about the whole thing? I mean, I know that it's going to be the latter because that's how Lucifer's reacted to that whole relationship, but I'm hoping that the writers surprise me.

Random Thoughts

I just had my whole issue with Pierce's "Chloe's Love = Vulnerability" theory. Chloe began making Lucifer vulnerable back in episode four. I honestly don't think that they were even friends at that point?

Dan's reactions were just comedic gold all throughout the episode.

What was in the envelope? Was it the ring?

I know that Lucifer played fast and loose with things like proper legal procedure, but Charlotte has to know that any evidence that she gets from breaking into someone's home won't fly.

Oh yeah, the fact that Pierce was the Sinnerman was brought up again. Remember when that actually felt like it was going to be an important plot point?

Quotes:

Ella: Dope shades, missy!
Chloe: Thanks.
Ella: Yeah, I only wear mine inside when I'm, like, super hungover or, you know, for some reason I've been crying.

Ella: Anyway, time to get this slipper back to the lab. Any other questions, here's my prelim.
Dan: Uh, I'm going to join her, cuz this is awkward. Oh, and personally? I'm with you, buddy. Screw that guy.

Pierce: I love you.
Chloe: What do you expect me to say to that?
Pierce: Well, that you love me too.

  1. This show has such a great premise and such charming characters played by wonderful actors. I would very much like them to give us more of what we want and less of what they think the suits want.

If it helps any, IMDb says there's only three more episodes this season, not five:

  2. Hmmm.... Okay, I misunderstood some information then. Apparently there's two episodes that were filmed/written for this season but are being moved back to Season 4, if we get one. I didn't catch the "moving back" part. (According to Wikipedia.)

  3. Huh. Honestly, I have no idea. Maybe all this moving around of episodes is why everything feels disconnected.

  4. I honestly think that's the case, especially for the front half of the season since we got 4 stand-alones from Season 2 (The Maze-centric one from the very beginning, Off the Record, City of Angels?, and.... I'm not sure what the last one is.) I don't know why TPTB are so intent on shuffling around episodes and moving them to later seasons, especially since this seems to be a Lucifer-sepcfiic phenomenon? I don't know of other shows that regularly do this.

  5. Vegas with Some Radishes. That was the fourth one.

  6. I know it's Deeper Television Wisdom that you don't put a will-they-won't-they couple together because as soon as you do, it stops working and the romantic tension dries up. But sometimes keeping a couple apart is so stupid and obviously wrong that it *also* doesn't work. I think we're deeply mired in situation two and they need to fix it, but I don't think they can.
