Lucifer: Orgy Pants to Work

Several months have passed, and Lucifer is having an identity crisis.

Considering what a strong personality he has, it's interesting that Lucifer is trying to define who he wants to be by the woman he wants to be with. Linda told him he was bifurcating (what a great word). When Lucifer is with Eve, he's the hedonistic sex fiend that she expects – but it's bleeding over into his professional work with Chloe. Lucifer is so emotionally confused that he's going to crime scenes in his orgy pants. And all three members of our love triangle – Lucifer, Chloe and Eve – are noticeably unhappy.

Even though it was amusing, I mostly found the orgy stuff sort of stupid. We all know that while Lucifer enjoys drinking, drugs and sex, it's not who he really is. He won't let go of his work with the LAPD, and he was looking for an excuse to avoid Eve. While on stakeout, he told Chloe that he likes to work, that it makes him want to be a better man. Also on stakeout, Chloe told the Lucifer some truths. Unfortunately, he was asleep at the time.

The case of the week was more interesting than most. The crime scene was visually striking and creepy, with the body of poor Gary the boring auditor impaled on metal statuary fronds. The investigation at the nudist colony featured Lucifer and Ella matter-of-factly working while naked and included some clever visual jokes with belts, jugs and bananas, plus an interrogation of Julian the bad guy in a hot tub.

And then it turned out Gary the auditor was killed because he had stumbled over Julian's horrendous human trafficking business. Making it even worse, young Joan the rookie cop, one of Lucifer's work friends, was killed during the initial unsuccessful takedown. Did Lucifer actually kill Julian in the end? There's no question that Julian deserved an eternity of torture in Hell, but the idea of Lucifer killing people, even the most revolting of humans, is disturbing, and I don't like it. What Lucifer did to Cain should be a one-time thing.

The B-plot was about the arrival of yet another celestial sibling – Remiel, an anti-human bigot with gorgeous wings who wants to take Linda's baby to Heaven forever. Of course, she thought Lucifer was the father, but fortunately, Amenadiel was ready with the misleading distractions as well as a commitment to keeping his baby on earth with Linda. Amenadiel has done such a 180 since his arrival at the beginning of the series. He's so endearing.

And so is Maze, who has done a similar 180. I was expecting whatever was in the metal box she gave Linda to be something nuts, not a soft little baby blanket. Constant interaction with humans has made Maze realize that she wants love, and Linda's pregnancy has brought Maze's mother issues to the fore. Maze's mother was Lilith, Adam's first wife. I bet the Lucifer Powers That Be are discussing casting already.

Maze met Eve for the first time, and sparks flew. They even went to some sort of rodeo event together that involved a chain saw and a teddy bear. Are they setting up an Eve/Maze romance? What shipper name should they have? Mazeve? Emaze?

Eve already knows that, while she wants to be with Lucifer because he makes her feel like she's finally her real self, the opposite is true for him. Good for Eve, being honest with herself, even if she does eat her feelings. I think I like her.

Bits:

— It's interesting that fifteen years ago, Chloe's career choice had her naked in a hot tub. Speaking of which, kiddie pools? Is there a perversion involving them that I'm unaware of? Water sports, maybe? I've led such a sheltered life.

— Lucifer mixed up the gifts he sent to Eve and Chloe: a copier that printed an apology, and a sex doll. How perfectly representative of how he sees his relationships with the two of them.

— The shot of Maze at Linda's Lamaze class eating popcorn and grinning gleefully as she watched the birth movie made me laugh out loud. I remember those movies, and not fondly.

— Dan is being a jerk, telling Lucifer that Charlotte's and Joan's deaths were Lucifer's fault. Yes, Dan is lashing out because he's in mourning, but I like Dan and Lucifer much better as friends, which I probably mentioned in my previous review.

— Can you actually do facial recognition from a sketch?

— I don't think an angel named Remiel has been on Supernatural, but Lilith has. And I loved the little reference Amenadiel made to the angel Castiel. If you don't watch Supernatural, the angel Castiel is a major character. (See our article on characters in both Lucifer and Supernatural with the same name.)

I'm not sure what to rate this one because I hated the ending. What do you guys think?
