Lucifer: Pin the Tail on the Daddy

"It's like an M. Night Shyamalan movie up in here."

I'm not sure if that's a comparison that you want to make, Ella. His movies tend to bring out very divided opinions, especially when it comes to their endings.

I can't believe that we've actually dropped the police procedural side of the series. Both last episode and now in this one, there hasn't been a body to investigate with the LAPD. Yes, we had a missing person case, but that only really consisted of two or three scenes. It's weird. I don't miss the cases, but they certainly gave the episodes a certain kind of structure. Removing this structure makes the episode feel more like a character study, but also like very little is actually progressing in any meaningful way.

This entire episode could have been avoided by asking one, simple question: "What's your mother's name?" Granted, Baby Morningstar did fly off fairly quickly and having her say that her mom was Chloe would ruin the whole twist at the end of the episode. It's just that this same twist made the episode feel very superfluous, which is annoying when we don't have many episodes left.

Chloe and Lucifer had a baby girl. Apparently. When? Chloe did ask if time worked differently in Heaven than it did on Earth, so maybe there was a pregnancy while she was dead? Except that doesn't make sense, because again, Chloe was dead. She was just a soul. Which leads me to time travel, two words that usually send shivers down my spine. Or maybe that's just because I haven't warmed up to the latest addition to the family yet.

Billie mentioned in a comment that focusing on a brand new character at the end of a series not a good idea. It worked with Carol. He was very likable, but also he essentially disappeared after he and Ella had their very cute movie date. Now, we have a second, brand new character. She is far less likable, and I get the feeling that she'll be sticking around. I don't hate the idea of Lucifer having a kid. Given his own relationship with his father, that can be some very emotional material to dig into. But him being raked over the coals for abandoning a daughter that he didn't even know he had or may not even be conceived yet leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Especially since Lucifer very clearly showed how much he grew to care about his surprise daughter in such a short amount of time. By his last conversation with Dan, he was ready and excited to go after her and try to be the father that she deserved. For the devil, he cares about people. A lot. That has always been one of his defining characteristics, right from when we saw him using his favor with Delilah to have her get her life back on track. I just can't see him leaving his daughter, never mind one that he had with Chloe.

If Lucifer leaves Chloe, I am going to be very, very upset.

Lucifer's care also extends to Dan, even if that results in him lying by omission. (Something that Lucifer does a lot.) Playing pingpong for thousands of years does sound better than being trapped on Earth, unable to interact with anything and with all of your loved ones unable to hear or see you. That's true torture. At least celestials can see him. Amenadiel's apology for the fight that they had was touching. I question Maze's poker face, but the reveal that she could see him too was funny.

Random Thoughts

I know that it was played for laughs, but the fact that Chloe has an app that lets her know where Lucifer is was kind of creepy.

Who the hell just gets naked right in the doorway where anyone on the street can see?

Maybe it's for the best that no one can see Dan. Him just showing up at the station would create a ton of questions that would not be easy to answer.

  1. Yes, asking "who is your mother?" would have been the first question, but it was such a lovely reveal at the end for it to be Chloe.

  2. I'm enjoying this season so far, even though I'm not sure how I feel about little Miss Morningstar. Maybe when I find out where she came from and what the circumstances were?

I also liked the way Maze faked Dan out. Poor Dan. I want a happy ending for him. Actually, I want a happy ending for everyone. Shocker, huh?

  3. I have been thinking about the fact that Chloe tracked Lucifer's phone. Given how he kept showing up at her house for the past five years, never respecting boundaries, I don't think he would mind. In one episode we learn that he copied her car key so he could unlock it. And when he returned from Vegas and found Chloe, Dan and Linda all asleep in his penthouse, he was pleased and not angry.

I agree it seems unlike Chloe not to tell him - but maybe she did?

  4. Something seems a little off with Chloe and nothing to do with her being bored or purposeless.

''Removing this structure makes the episode feel more like a character study''

Four episodes in and i think this is by design. Also alot more extended 2/3 people scenes. This season feels more like an epilogue/wrap up/send off/ love letter for the characters rather than a continuing plot full of twists and turns.

In the comics Lucifer had the ability to Time travel.

  5. The showrunners basically said they would do away with the police procedural aspect to concentrate on the character's and to say goodbye to the fans, so it was intentional.

  6. I did not see that ending coming.

    I've been Shyamalan-ed.
